What you need to know about premium bonds

This year I've helped a number of British expats that have put some of their savings in Premium Bonds, utilising the £50k maximum. I must admit that I didn't know too much about them, so I decided to delve deeper to see if it is something I should be suggesting to clients as an option. What I've learnt doesn't make me a big fan. With around 22 million individuals and deposits hitting £68 billion, Premium Bonds are still a very popular savings product in Britain.

Are premium bonds worth buying?

01:33
Premium bonds are still the nation's favourite, but are they worth it? We weigh up the pros and cons of this popular tax-free NS&I savings product. Instead of paying interest, like traditional savings accounts, every premium bond is entered into a monthly prize draw, with winners being selected at random by National Savings & Investments (NS&I). You can win tax-free prizes worth £25 to £1m every month, and buy premium bonds on behalf of children. NS&I is backed by the Treasury so 100% of your money is safe. However, the maximum you can invest is £50,000, and you won't get a guaranteed return on your money or a regular income. Landing a prize is a lottery so you could win nothing at all. What is PREMIUM BOND? What does PREMIUM BOND mean? PREMIUM BOND meaning - PREMIUM BOND definition - PREMIUM BOND explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ A Premium Bond is a lottery bond issued by the United Kingdom government's National Savings and Investments agency. The bonds are entered in a regular prize draw and the government promises to buy them back, on request, for their original price. The bonds were introduced by Harold Macmillan in 1956. The government pays interest on the bond (1.25% per year as at July 2016). Interest is paid into a fund from which a monthly lottery distributes tax-free prizes to bondholders whose numbers are selected randomly. The machine that generates numbers is ERNIE, for Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment. Prizes range from L25 to L1,000,000. Between 2005 and 2009, there were two L1m prizes each month and the minimum prize was L50, but prizes were reduced after the 2009 drop in interest rates. A second L1m prize was reintroduced in August 2014. Investors can buy bonds at any time; they have to be held for a calendar month before they qualify for a prize. Numbers are entered in the draw each month, with an equal chance of winning, until the bond is cashed. Winners of the jackpot are told on the first working day of the month, although the actual date of the draw varies. The online prize finder is updated by the third or fourth working day of the month. From 1 January 2009 the odds of winning a prize for each L1 of bond was 36,000 to 1. In October 2009, the odds returned to 24,000 to 1 with the prize fund interest rate increase. The odds reached 26,000 to 1 by October 2013. Around 23 million people own Premium Bonds, over one third of the UK population. As of July 2016, each person may own bonds up to L50,000. Bonds can be bought in units of L1 after the first L100, with a value of L1 per bond and a minimum purchase of 100 bonds (or 50 bonds when paying by standing order). When introduced in 1957 they were popular – the only other similar games were football pools; the National Lottery did not exist until 1994. In Ireland, the Prize Bond originated in early 1957. In December 2008, NS&I dropped the interest rate (and therefore the odds of winning) due to the drop in the Bank of England base rate during the credit crunch, leading to criticism from members of Parliament, financial experts and holders of bonds; many claimed Premium Bonds were now "worthless", and somebody with L30,000 invested and "average luck" would win only 10 prizes a year compared to 15 the previous year. Investors with smaller although significant amounts would possibly win nothing. Based on odds as of June 2015 of 1/26000, the expected number of prizes for the maximum L50,000 worth of bonds is 23 per year. The calculation is 1/26000 x 12 (draws per year) x 50,000 (number of bonds held). According to the Premium Bond Probability Calculator on MoneySavingExpert.com, which updates odds each month, the odds of a prize as of February 2014 are: Hold L100 over a year and the chance of winning anything is 4.51%. Hold L1,000 over a year and the chance of winning anything is 37%. Hold L10,000 over a year and the chance of winning anything is 99%.

Breaking News - Kent woman scoops £1m jackpot with Premium Bond from 2016

03:22
It might just be the best investment of last year. One of the lucky winners of a £1million Premium Bonds prize will be toasting Christmas arriving early today – after scooping the jackpot with a bond bought in May 2016.The unnamed woman from Kent will get her Christmas surprise on the doorstep rather than down the chimney, when the Premium Bonds’ Agent Million arrives to tell her she has won.She was one of the two jackpot winners in the December draw of the savings lottery and has turned bond number 273WE102226 worth £1 into £1million in just 18 months – a return even bitcoin can’t match.Although her odds weren't quite that long, as the woman from Kent has a total Premium Bonds holding worth £34,050.The other £1million winner was another woman from Cornwall who has held her winning bond, number 060PV693631, since February 2005 and has a total holding worth £20,000.The two big prize winners will be joined by more further down the scale this month, as the Premium Bonds prize fund was upped to deliver a better equivalent rate of return following the Bank of England raising interest rates in November. For December’s draw, the prize fund rose from 1.15 per cent to 1.40 per cent and the odds of winning any prize with a £1 bond improved from 30,000:1 to 24,500:1.Jill Waters, retail director at NS&I, said: ‘Agent Million has been spreading joy for over 20 years, and this will be an early Christmas present that our two jackpot winners will never forget.‘As it is the season of goodwill, this is the first draw since we increased the prize fund rate and improved odds of winning a prize, meaning that we will be distributing more prizes than ever before in a monthly draw.’It might sound surprising that people would leave money sitting unclaimed from the Premium Bonds but there are more than 1.4million prizes that have not been taken. These are worth a total of £57.4million and among them is a £50,000 prize unclaimed by someone in Kent by a woman who NS&I knows has £128 invested in Premium Bonds. Her bond number, which she is unlikely to know off by heart, is 3VT019901 and the prize came up a decade ago in the November 2017 draw.Prizes typically go unclaimed because someone has moved house and not told NS&I or forgotten about bonds that they either bought or had bought for them.To check if you have any unclaimed prizes, got to NS&I’s unclaimed prizes page here AutoNews- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/saving/article-5133647/Kent-woman-scoops-1m-jackpot-Premium-Bond-2016.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Breaking News - Saver scoops £1m in his FIRST ever Premium Bond draw

04:44
A man from Bedfordshire has scooped the £1million jackpot prize just a month after buying Premium Bonds for the very first time. The man invested £7,000 in the popular government-backed savings products and defied mammoth odds to win the jackpot in the first month that his bonds were eligible to win a prize. He was one of March's two jackpot winners, the other being a Wiltshire man who has held Premium Bonds since childhood.Premium Bonds are Britain’s most popular savings product - around 21million people hold almost £72billion worth. Those who invest in the National Savings and Investments run bonds have a typical return of 1.4 per cent. Nearly 3million bonds won prizes of £25 in the March draw. The minimum amount savers can invest is £100 - and the money can be withdrawn anytime. Those who hold bonds, however, have the odds stacked against them and may not win a prize each year - or even during their lifetime, depending on the size of their investment. For instance, there is a 1 in 24,500 chance of a single bond winning £25.The chances of any £1 bond winning the jackpot are an eye-watering one in 36billion, showing just how lucky that bond holder from Bedforshire is to win within one month of investing. In comparison, the chances of winning the Lotto are roughly 1 in 14million per £2 ticket - however, unlike Premium Bonds, the stake is lost unless you win.The man won with bond number 320GM702120 and has since invested a further £500 of bonds that were not eligible for the draw. The other winner was an individual from Wiltshire who has owned a few Premium Bonds since childhood. He is the second person from the county to win one of the jackpots this year.He has held the maximum limit of £50,000 in the account since August 2017.NS&I has offered two £1million jackpot prizes in its draws since January 2016, while the amount savers can hold in them has risen in recent years. The draw is made by Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment - otherwise known as ERNIE - each month.Jill Waters, retail director at NS&I, said: 'The popularity of Premium Bonds is enriched with the moments ERNIE creates and the great stories that are there to be told.'March’s jackpot winners won with Bonds purchased within the last seven months, and ERNIE has rewarded them with the top prizes in such a short space of time.'In total, over 3million prizes have been paid out in March 2018’s prize draw. This is the first month in which ERNIE has paid out over 3million prizes.'Agent Million - who travels the country to deliver the jackpot news (LINK: 2221468) - will be hand delivering their prizes this month.NS&I says there are currently around 1.4million unclaimed Premium Bonds prizes, worth over £58million.In Wiltshire, there are currently around 9,000 unclaimed prizes worth over £330,000. Bedfordshire currently has around 5,000 unclaimed prizes worth over £200,000.In the March 2018 draw, a total of 3,004,822 prizes worth £85,887,850 will be paid out. There were 73,618,138,796 bonds el AutoNews- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/saving/article-5446171/Saver-scoops-1m-Premium-Bond-draw.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Breaking News - NS&I launches first guaranteed income bonds since 2009

07:27
Savers can now get their hands on four new accounts from National Savings and Investments as it looks to attract more cash this financial year.It has launched two Guaranteed Growth Bonds. The one-year option has a 1.5 per cent rate while the three-year rate is a near market-leading 2.2 per cent. This is the same rate that was launched earlier in the year in the form of the Investment Guaranteed Growth Bond. However, this new account allows a far more generous £1million to enter, rather than a ceiling of £3,000.A pair of Guaranteed Income Bonds pay slightly lower rates at 1.45 per cent and 2.15 per cent, but offer the chance to have interest paid monthly. The new deals' £1million maximum limit may be proof that the take-up of the special bond earlier in the year - announced in the 2016 Budget by Chancellor Philip Hammond - has been slow.NS&I had ambitious targets to attract £10billion to £16billion of net financing in the current tax year. However, this has been downgraded to £5billion to £11billion, it says, as a result of 'changes in the savings market'.The Government-backed savings provider refused to give This is Money an update on the bonds earlier in the year, despite frequently giving updates on its 'Pensioner Bonds' launched in 2015.NS&I has also launched a Guaranteed Income Bond offering 1.45 per cent over a year and 2.15 per cent over three, giving those needing a regular income payment a much needed boost. It says it is the first time these products have been on general sale since 2009. All of these products are only available to open online. However, they can be managed online, by phone and post, once open. The minimum investment is £500.The move comes after NS&I boosted rates on a number of products last month in the aftermath of the Bank of England decision to nudge interest rates from 0.25 per cent to 0.5 per cent.Ian Ackerley, chief executive of NS&I, said: 'We are really pleased to be able to bring Guaranteed Growth Bonds and Guaranteed Income Bonds back on sale, which is another boost to savers following rate increases to our variable rate products, including Premium Bonds, on 1 December.'Savers can already invest up to £3,000 in the three-year Investment Guaranteed Growth Bond, which is on sale until April 2018.'These Issues of Guaranteed Growth Bonds and Guaranteed Income Bonds will also help those who want a one-year investment or who want to invest additional savings for three years.'As well as being able to invest up to £1million per person, per Issue in our one or three-year Bonds, savers will also benefit from NS&I's 100 per cent HM Treasury guarantee.'Rates on growth bonds are 1.5 per cent over one-year and 2.2 per cent over three years, while the income bonds are 01.45 per cent and 2.15 per cent, respectively.Currently, savers can get a far higher 1.95 per cent fixed for one year with challenger bank Atom, according to the independent This is Money savings tables.Al Rayan has a 1.85 per cent rate and Milestone Savings 1.82 pe AutoNews- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/saving/article-5143591/NS-launches-guaranteed-income-bonds-2009.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Premium Bonds - Christmas (1959, UK)

This TV ad is taken from the BFI's newly opened PIF archive. Description from the BFI's website: "Double your chances this Christmas! A very merry Saint Nick plugs Premium Bonds as the perfect pressie in a wonderfully dated TV advert from 1959. Sold as the 'gift with the £1000 thrill' (each £1 bond qualified for a monthly prize draw with a top win of £1000), government-guaranteed savings bonds were an instant hit with the public when first launched by PM Harold Macmillan in 1956."

THE UK’s NUMBER 1 FIXED INCOME SECURED BOND INVESTMENT

02:11
Investors capital protection has been put at the forefront when designing this bond to insure against the risk of capital loss. With this in mind an insurance policy guarantees at all times investors’ capital from risks of loss. This insurance policy has been specifically tailored to the bond providers exacting trading model. For the first time, access is offered at a low entry level of £5,000 to a low risk fully capital protected trading platform, which previously was only available to large financial institutions with tens of millions of capital. This is done through the bond issuers long-standing relationships with fund managers, traders and professionals at the highest level within the financial sector, which are not available to retail investors. Profits are generated in a low risk manner by buying and selling securities through a well-known method called arbitrage. Arbitrage is the simultaneous purchase and sale of an asset, in order to profit from the price differences between a seller and a buyer of financial instruments. These transactions will only take place if they have been pre-sold at a profit prior to purchase, with a contract binding the purchaser to complete, removing any risk for the investor. This fixed income investment market accounts for trillions of pounds every year through the world’s financial institutions, which until now was previously a closed market for private individuals. All subscriptions into the bond will be received by a regulated payments services provider (Security Trustee) in the UK. They are then placed directly by this FCA regulated company into the chosen trades with a first charge over the contract. The security trustee will then hold profits in an independent designated deposit account account which is known as a sinking fund. This means that all bond subscriptions and profits are ring-fenced and secure. Should you require access to your money quickly this can be done in writing with funds received in 30 days. This is subject to receiving 95% of the bonds nominal value. This can now be accessed through an exclusive bond only available through Protected Capital. EXCLUSIVELY AVAILABLE ONLY FROM PROTECTED CAPITAL

The Importance of Being E. R. N. I. E.

20:46
E.R.N.I.E. stands for Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment. ERNIE was invented by one of the original Bletchley Park codebreakers and was used to pick the Premium Bond Winners. This film, made in 1964, was produced for the General Post Office to show how the system worked.

Roy Wood – “The Premium Bond Theme” (Harvest) 1974

04:25
Written and produced by Roy Wood. And, as it says on the disc, Roy played all the instruments. Premium bonds are lottery bonds and they have been issued by the UK Government since 1956. An interesting title from Mr. Wood, given that this music would fit right into the soundtrack of a James Bond film. Roy has been involved with three major UK groups, the Move, Wizard and the Electric Light Orchestra. He began releasing solo records in the UK in 1972. “The Premium Bond Theme” was the flipside of “Goin’ Down The Road”, which reached # 13 on the UK singles’ chart.

NS&I - Meet a Premium Bonds prize winner

00:31
Most of the winners of our big Premium Bonds prizes like to keep their identity a secret. But this wasn't always the case. Back in the late 1950s, when Premium Bond prize draws first took place, some of our big prize winners were happy to share their experience. Meet Mr and Mrs Bloom. They won £1,000 on Premium Bonds. When Premium Bonds were first introduced there was a prize draw every week, and the biggest prize was £1,000.
