What exactly does it mean when you hear the phrase independent registered investment advisor? Well, let’s dig in. When it comes to financial planning and making decisions on who to help you with your financial future, investors are often faced with many options. I feel one of the most important decisions is to figure out what firm to work with to and throughout retirement. A good place to start is by getting together with an independent registered investment advisor. And here’s why. An independent investment advisor is just that…independent. Independent advisors are not tied to any particular investment company or products and have the ability to help evaluate the strengths and weaknesses from a world of financial products, from many different financial institutions. They have the freedom to shop around and choose from a wide range of investment options in order to customize their advice, based on what’s ultimately best for the client. Many independent financial planning firms are not owned by a bank, insurance company, or brokerage firm, so they are often free to hit the marketplace and find solutions that are in the best interest of the client, without the corporate structure and constraints dictating what to recommend. Now, while many advisors claim to be independent, in my experience, if they are employed by one of those large companies, a lot of times you are going to be offered products from that particular company or their affiliated partners. This doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t looking out for you, or their company’s products are bad, it may just mean they don’t have ability to search high and low for the best comparable products for you. In my experience, the advice you’ll get from an independent advisor should be objective and conflict-free in nature since, they typically do not have sales quotas or proprietary products to push. The client needs are always first and at the center of everything the independent financial advisor does. Another reason you may want to seek out an independent registered investment advisor is because they are often held to the fiduciary standard. That means they are legally obligated to put their clients’ best interest first, ahead of their own and held to the highest standard when it comes to financial advice - isn’t that the way it should be? That’s not to say that all financial advisors aren’t looking out for their client’s best interest, however, as mentioned before, they might be limited in their access to financial solutions that could be a better fit for the client’s overall situation. Once again, that doesn’t necessarily mean the product is bad, it just may not be the best solution for you. Deciding where to go for financial advice can be a very difficult decision. And while there are many great advisors out there, I encourage to spend some time seeking out an independent investment advisor to see if it could be the right fit for you. I think you’ll be glad you did. Investment Advisory Services offered through Bravias Capital Group, LLC ("BCG"), a New Jersey State Registered Investment Advisor. http://sensibleinvesting.tv -- the independent voice of passive investing A remarkable 54-minute film featuring some of the world's top economists and academics and demonstrating: * how the claims of active fund managers to be able to beat the market are largely a myth * how costs are the biggest drag on performance - and why active costs more * how passive investing offers the best experience for the vast majority of investors * the benefits of a diversified portfolio in guaranteeing consistent returns * why passive investing is better for your health * why active investing has held sway for so many years.... * ... but why things may be changing * and why passive is the rational, mathematically proven route to investing success. Investing for the future... It's an issue none of can afford to ignore. No one's job is safe these days... How would you cope if you lost yours? We're all living longer too... So are you saving enough to fund 25 years or more of retirement? Can you really afford to pay for your children or grandchildren to go to university - or help them onto the property ladder? And what about all those holidays you promised yourself? We entrust the vast bulk of our investments to fund managers. Here in the UK, according to Her Majesty's Treasury, the industry has more than four TRILLION pounds of investors' money under management. Fund managers invest people's savings wherever they see fit - mainly in equities, or shares in listed companies. They claim to be experts at making our making grow, using their expert knowledge to pick the shares that will outperform the market. But all too often the returns they produce are considerably lower than the average return of a benchmark index like the FTSE 100 - or the S&P 500 in the States. For veteran investment guru John Bogle, the problem is simple. Fund managers just aren't as smart as they like to think they are. As it means trading against the view of numerous market participants with superior information, buying or selling a security is effectively just a bet. So, whilst your fund manager might lead you to believe it's his knowledge or intelligence that enables you to beat the market, he's really no better than a gambler. So, you might be lucky enough to choose the right fund manager. But you could just as easily pick the wrong one. According to the financial services company Bestinvest, there are currently nearly £10 billion of UK investors' money languishing in what it calls dog funds - in other words, funds which have underperperformed their benchmark index for at least three consecutive years. Ultimately, of course, fund managers are businesses. They exist to make money for themselves. They want our business - even if it means persuading us to invest in a fund which they themselves wouldn't want to put their own money in. It's now time to look at what it actually costs us to invest. Fund managers are, of course, businesses. And, like all business, they have overheads. Running a big fund management company doesn't come cheap - esepcially when top managers earn around £2 million a year, including bonuses. And remember, it's you, the customer, who picks up the tab. Ultimately, though, fund managers need to make a profit. In fact they'e making around £10 billion from us every year - and that's regardless of whether or not they manage to produce a profit for us. Part of the challenge is working out exactly what we are being charged. Investors typically use something called the annual Total Expense Ratio, or TER, to compare the cost of investing in different funds. But, the TER excludes dealing commission, stamp duty and other turnover costs that can add considerably to the expense of investing over time. So, apart from those hidden charges, what else are we having to pay? More importantly, what sort of impact do charges have on the value of our investments? And the bad news doesn't stop there. Despite a marked increase in competition, management charges in the UK have been steadily rising over the last ten years. There are some encouraging signs for consumers. The FSA's Retail Distribution Review will require fund managers to be fairer and more transparent when it comes to charges. In the meantime, investors should be on their guard. What does it mean for a company to have a moat? What are the key drivers to valuation? Pat Dorsey will use examples to shed light on these, and more questions. About the Book: Capitalism works. That’s why most businesses with high returns on capital attract competition that forces down profitability over time. However, a small minority of companies are able to defy the laws of economic gravity by creating competitive advantages, or “economic moats” that insulate them from competition and allow them to maintain high returns on capital. After spending fifteen years analyzing thousands of companies, Pat has identified a handful of structural characteristics that create competitive advantage. He will discuss these characteristics, how management teams can create and destroy competitive advantage, and how he applies competitive analysis in managing institutional capital at Dorsey Asset Management. About the author: Pat is the founder of Dorsey Asset Management, which manages concentrated global portfolios for institutional investors. Prior to starting Dorsey Asset, Pat was Director of Research for Sanibel Captiva Trust, an independent trust company with approximately $1 billion in assets under management serving high net worth clients. From 2000 to 2011, Pat was Director of Equity Research for Morningstar, where he led the growth of Morningstar’s equity research group from 10 to over 100 analysts. Pat developed Morningstar’s economic moat ratings, as well as the methodology behind Morningstar's framework for analyzing competitive advantage. Pat is also the author of two books — The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing and The Little Book that Builds Wealth — and has been quoted in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, the New York Times, and BusinessWeek. Pat holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in government from Wesleyan University. He is a CFA charterholder.

►About Charlie Munger Charlie Munger is one of the great minds of the 20th century. Below is an attempt to capture that wisdom in one shareable place. Charles “Charlie” Munger, a longtime resident of Pasadena, California, is perhaps best known as the Vice Chairman of the world’s greatest compound interest machine: Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. In the time of his and Warren Buffett’s reign as the leaders of Berkshire, the company has returned roughly 2,000,000% on its initial value, or 20,000 to 1. This was accomplished in the adult lifetime of two men, simply by investing the capital of the company in an increasing number of prosperous enterprises and without dangerous amounts of borrowing. It is a story for the ages. Charlie is known as a “sidekick” only to people who don’t know him very well. To those who do know him, Charlie is a fiercely independent intellectual who, in the words of his partner Buffett, “Marches to the beat of his own music, and it’s music like virtually no one else is listening to.” Besides his work co-headlining the Berkshire affair and a variety of other business and philanthropic ventures, Charlie is known for his fluent, multidisciplinary mind. Trained as a meteorologist during World War II and as a lawyer at Harvard before devoting himself to business, Munger has drawn heavily from the study of psychology, economics, physics, biology, and history, among other disciplines, in developing his system of “multiple mental models” to cut through difficult problems in complex social systems. It is a system like no other. As a result, his insights on business and life are unique, rare, and correct with unusual consistency. Speeches and writings made long ago stand up in their logic and validity today as much as when they were written, given their basis in the deeply fundamental wisdom of the world. Adopting the “Munger” approach to thinking is difficult, as is imitating any genius, but utilizing its core tenets will very quickly begin to remove the cobwebs from your mind. When asked his secret to success, Munger once answered simply “I’m rational.” If you would like to stay motivated please subscribe and turn the notification bell on (next to the subscribe button) to receive updates and notifications! ❤ HELP TRANSLATE THIS VIDEO ❤ If you loved this video, help people in other countries enjoy it too by making captions for it. http://sensibleinvesting.tv -- the independent voice of passive investing Passive Investing is becoming more popular in the US and the evidence is that it's beginning to take off in the UK. With investment costs higher here than almost anywhere else in the world, the potential for growth is huge, and the trend towards passive is gathering momentum. Featuring Vanguard's Bill McNabb and Gus Sauter, Ken French, William Bernstein and Jasmine Birtles along with Richard Wood and Igors Alferovs from UK wealth management firm BRWM. Last time we learned how the largely self-regulated fund management industry has a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, with active investing holding sway over passive. Human beings have a tendency towards over-confidence - and that's reflected in the way we invest. And, while ctive funds are widely advertised, assive funds aren't. Nor do they command much media attention. So what does the future hold for the passive approach when fund management companies are spending vast amounts of OUR money trying to convince us that active is best? Can it ever seriously challenge the instinctive belief that people have that, if only they can find the right manager, they will beat the market? Well, actually, passive investing has been gaining in popularity in the United States for many years. And all the signs are that it's just starting to take off here in Britain as well. When a company called Vanguard introduced the first index fund for individual investors in 1976, critics said it wouldn't catch on. It's now one of America's largest investment companies with more than one one-and-a-half trillion dollars of assets under management, and it's expanding worldwide. In fact Vanguard believes that passive investing has far greater potential in the UK because the cost of active fund management is higher over here than it is in the US. Although passive investment still accounts for a very small share of the retail investment market - in other words, the market for individual investors - institutional investors already have more than thirty per cent of their portfiolios invested in passive funds. One of the companies helping individual investors to take advantage of the lower costs and higher than average returns offered by passive investing is Barnett Ravenscroft Wealth Management. There are also signs that the media's becoming more receptive to the arguments for passive investing. Several independent internet sites which, unlike the financial press, don't rely on fund management companies for advertising revenue, and can therefore say what they really think about active funds, are also starting to recommend passive. So, to summarise... Passive investing has grown steadily in popularity in the United States since the 1970s and continues to do so. Passive already accounts for more than 30% of the institutional investment market in the UK. And, increasingly, both financial advisers and indepedent experts, are starting to recommend passive to individual investors. For more videos like this one, visit http://sensibleinvesting.tv

http://sensibleinvesting.tv -- the independent voice of passive investing A four-part series exploring the foundations of passive investing and the men who have brought it to global significance. Part one investigates one of the key fundamentals of passive investing; recognising the difference between investing and speculating, and short- and long-term strategies. Including studies of Benjamin Graham, Warren Buffett and the 'grandfather of passive investing', Vanguard founder John Bogle. With comment from Tim Hale and Jeffrey Molitor. The first person to make a clear distinction between active and passive investors was the American economist and financial analyst Benjamin Graham. Born in London in 1894, his parents moved to the States when he was a baby. He studied and taught at Columbia University and co-founded a highly successful investment company. His books have become investing classics. Graham described active investors as speculators. They need to be interested in studying companies and markets - and have the time time to do it. Ideally they'll have specialist knowledge as well. Passive investors, on the other hand, are essentially defensive, and in it for the long term. Graham recommended that passive investors have a diversified portfolio, split between shares and bonds, which they occasionally rebalance. One of Graham's students was Warren Buffett, who once described him as his "idol". LIke his mentor, Bufett is of course a speculator. But he, too, recommends passive investing for the majority of investors. "Most investors," he once said, "will find that the best way to own shares is through an index fund that charges minimal fees. Those following this path are sure to beat the net results of the great majority of investment professionals." But, without doubt, the most important figure by far in the development of passive investing is this man, John Bogle. In a thesis he wrote as a student at Princeton in 1951, Bogle highlighted the conflict between a stockbroker's loyalty to himself and his duty to his customer. Two decades later he founded a company on the Biblical principle that you cannot serve two masters. Bogle realised that most people are investors rather than speculators. By investing in low-cost index funds and settling for the average market return, they almost invariably end up better off than those who pay an active fund manager to speculate on their behalf. Indeed they have. American investors have poured nearly two and half trillion dollars into index funds, and Vanguard is now the biggest investment company in the world. A monumental achievement for the man who championed investing over speculating. For more videos like this one, visit http://sensibleinvesting.tv

London Central Apartments III: Now open for investment. LCP offers the opportunity to buy shares in an investment company holding around 40 high performing rental properties from £25,000 (subject to eligibility). It will make further acquisitions aimed at the buoyant private rented sector, targeting IRR returns in excess of 10% pa. See important information. Important Information LCA III and London Central Apartments III are the trading names of the London Central Portfolio Property Fund Limited, which is regarded as a regulated property fund in Guernsey and an independent closed-ended off-shore property company (advised by LCP) in the UK. The opportunity outlined in this summary is aimed at investors who are sufficiently sophisticated to understand the nature of the investments and the risks involved. The risk factors set out below are important. There is a risk that the investment objectives of the Investment Vehicle (IV) will not be realised. Projections or forecasts are subject to many assumptions, some of which may not come to pass. Property prices may fall in value due to a wide variety of general or localised economic factors. The value of property may be affected by general factors affecting supply and demand, interest rates, global capital flows, market confidence, political stability etc., which could all have an impact on the performance of the IV. Any investment should be regarded as fixed term in nature to be held until the proposed IV is wound up, after a period of approximately five years, unless extended. Property assets have limited liquidity and there may be certain circumstances where it may prove difficult to dispose of a property asset. This factor may extend the time that it takes to wind up the IV. There is a risk that the investment period of the IV of five years may be extended by a majority vote of investors at a general meeting. The capital value of any shares of the IV may fall and the anticipated income may fall and investors may not get back the amount originally invested. Past performance of property investments is not a guide to the future. PCL means the London boroughs of Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea only. Please note that the reported past performance of LCPPF, LCRRF, LCA and LCP’s clients relates to the performance of one and two bedroom flats, whereas the PCL market as a whole, includes a wide variety of properties. The independent market data reported solely relates to capital values and does not reflect the overall performance of the funds which would include transaction costs, SDLT, refurbishment costs, rental income, letting fees, financing costs, maintenance costs, the costs of management and administration of each fund, audit and valuation fees etc. Please be aware that the details contained within this summary are subject to change and it is recommended that investors should undertake research for the purposes of due diligence. An offer of securities is set out in detail in an Investment Memorandum and any investment should be made solely on this basis. This summary is intended to elicit preliminary expressions of interest and does not constitute any offer, solicitation or advice to invest in the IV. It is aimed at persons in the United Kingdom and outside of the European Union, other than anyone in any jurisdiction where such promotion would be illegal, notably the United States of America. Any investor based outside the UK should take into account any possible currency fluctuations and the impact this might have on their returns. Any nominated Third Party providers may change in the final IM. If you are in any doubt or have any queries, potential investors should seek advice from an adviser specialising in such investments before making any decision. This financial promotion is issued by London Central Portfolio Ltd and approved as a financial promotion under Section 21 of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 by LLP Services Ltd (authorised & regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK). If your parents are like me, you have been told, ‘Beta, get a job after graduation and be loyal to one company until you retire.’ And the only financial advice you got from them is how to write a check. With this golden knowledge, at the age of 21, I became a Software Engineer, at an I.T company that was paying me peanuts. Money was bad, salary hike was almost zero, work was pathetic and my growth was stagnant. Every month my salary would barely survive the end of the month. But a girl needs money. To study further, to travel, to buy a house, to save for emergency, to save for retirement. But most importantly, I needed money because I wanted to make my own life decisions. All of us worry about gender equality, but that will come only after we first become financially independent. And a 9 to 7 job is not going to get you that independence. And yet, I am the only one in the family who got a house before I turned 25. And for that you don’t have to work for 10 hours every day. You have to make smart financial decisions. And trust me, this is something that every girl should know. It not only helps your career, but it also changes the dynamics of any relationship that you are in. Be it mother, wife, daughter. Because you will not be considered a ‘dependent’ anymore. So girls, no matter if you are 20, 30 or 40, by the end of this video, I will tell you how even if you have low income, more responsibilities, debt, taxes, you can still start investing now. Because it’s not about how much money you earn. It’s about what you do with it. (Transcript is below) Fund board directors are seeking to modernize the roles they have played in serving funds and their investors. In the March 23, 2018, edition of Focus on Funds, Amy Lancellotta, managing director of the Independent Directors Council, describes the changes that are needed. For more information, visit http://www.idc.org ----------------------------------------------- Stephanie Ortbals-Tibbs, ICI director, media relations: After more than half a century, there could be an opportunity to modernize the rules governing how fund board directors do their job. Amy Lancellotta of the Independent Directors Council shared some insight on what regulators are looking at, and what the IDC is recommending. Amy Lancellotta, managing director, Independent Directors Council: Directors’ responsibilities have grown significantly since 1940, when the Investment Company Act was first adopted. Over all of these decades, no one has been able to really step back and take a look at those responsibilities, to determine whether any should be eliminated or modified to allow directors appropriate time to focus on those areas where they really add value. Consequently, a number of directors now are tasked with checking the box or performing ritualistic, outdated, or duplicative tasks in many instances, where there may be other personnel within the advisory firm that’s better suited to perform the responsibility. For example, a number of the responsibilities have been on the books way before a CCO was required. Ortbals-Tibbs: And a CCO—a chief compliance officer—was required starting in 2004. That’s a significant change, both to the industry and for the board responsibilities. Lancellotta: The CCO requirement was a game changer for directors on many different levels. But most notably, directors and CCOs are now performing a lot of the same tasks. Ortbals-Tibbs: So it’s exciting, then, that the US Securities and Exchange Commission is looking at this. Lancellotta: We are very pleased that the Division of Investment Management has announced a director-outreach initiative to take a look at current responsibilities imposed on fund boards. In October, IDC submitted a letter to the division with some specific recommendations of our own. Ortbals-Tibbs: And you all really are the experts on what fund board directors might look like. What are some of the things that you recommended? Lancellotta: Our overall theme was, the role of fund boards is one of oversight, not management. We are hoping to develop a common understanding between the regulators, the independent director community, and the industry as to what the appropriate oversight role is for fund boards. That would apply to existing regulations as well as regulations going forward. Ortbals-Tibbs: So this could really help fund boards keep their eye on the ball in ways they feel are the most valuable. Lancellotta: Absolutely. It is time to modernize directors’ responsibilities, and we are hopeful that we will see that happen.

http://sensibleinvesting.tv -- the independent voice of passive investing Passive investing aims to 'capture the market' and diversification is key to achieving this. Avoiding 'putting all your eggs in one basket' by investing in a low cost, widely diversified passive portfolio allows you to reap the higher rewards of riskier assets whilst smoothing out some of the volatility. Featuring interviews with Dan Goldie, Prof Anthony Neuberger, William Sharpe, Laurence Gosling, David Booth, Weston Wellington, Charles Ellis and Bill Bernstein. Before we move on, a recap on what we learned last time. First passive investing is not so much a theory as a matter of mathematical fact. There's a wealth of evidence supporting it - including the work of Nobel Prize-winning economists. And, studies have consistently shown that, when costs are factored in, passive investing produces better returns than active fund management. Of course one of the golden rules of investing is not to put all your eggs in one basket. And the cheapest and most effective way to diversify is to invest passively. Why pin your hopes on the shares of a handful of companies when, for less money, you can spread your risk by taking a stake in the entire market? Active fund managers like to give the impression their funds do spread the risk you're taking. But while index funds often hold hundreds or even thousands of stocks, a typical managed fund will hold only around 50. So if you choose an active fund you're opting for greater volatility - and you're paying a premium for the privilege. Active fund managers do offer more genuinely diversified investments. Recent years have seen a proliferation of so-called balanced, cautious and defensive funds, as well as funds of funds. But the charges on these funds are even higher. Among the most expensive funds are what are called absolute return funds, which are supposed to provide the investor with some sort of return whatever happens - but in reality often don't. Not only does the passive approach offer ultimate diversification within a fund; it also allows an investor to buy an entire asset class. There are index funds for virtually every type of asset, whether it's European equities, corporate bonds or UK gilts. And even when you put your money in riskier assets you're still spreading you're risk by investing in the whole market. To find out how investing passively can help you reap the higher rewards of riskier assts while smoothing out some of the volatility, I visited Austin, Texas. This is home to Dimensional, a passive investment company specialising in investing in small comapnies and so-called value stocks. One argument often put forward by proponents of active fund management is that when asset prices fall, they do so across the board. True, the value of an index fund tracking the FTSE 100, for example, rises and falls in direct correlation with the index itself. But despite the disappointing performance of equities since 1999, a passive investor would still be sitting on a sizeable profit if they had spread their inverstments - especially when dividends are taken into account. On average, they're also better off than if they'd put their money into actively managed funds. And so, to that other golden rule of investing... Always take the long-term view. So, let's summarise... Investing passively is the cheapest and most effective way to spread your risk. Because their holdings are restricted to a relatively small number of stocks, active equity funds are more volatile than passive ones. Active fund managers charge a premium for funds that invest in more than one asset class. And, over the long term, once charges are taken into account, the passive investor will always fare better than the average active investor. 10 Levels of Financial Independence And Early Retirement | How to Retire Early. Long-term financial goals can sometimes seem so big that they feel almost unattainable especially when we’re just getting started on our road to financial independence. I and many others like me in the financially independent, retired early community have found it helpful to break down the goal of becoming financially independent into smaller and more manageable levels of financial independence. Not only because it makes it easier for us to track our progress, which in turns helps us to stay motivated throughout the process, but also because it helps us get over that initial hurdle of starting to chip away at this mountain of a task. In today’s video, I’m going to take you through what I consider to be the 10 levels of financial independence as well as give an example on how to go from the first level to achieving Financial Independence in your lifetime. 1/10/2019 Webcast: Vanguard CEO Tim Buckley and CIO Greg Davis look ahead to 2019 Vanguard Personal Advisor Services® combines the benefits of having a Certified Financial Planner™ professional in your corner with the cost efficiencies of using leading-edge technology for the technical aspects of portfolio management, as CEO Tim Buckley explains here. An advisor is your investing partner for the long term; someone who'll get to know your priorities, answer your questions, strategize about college savings or retirement planning—and who can coach you through periods of market turbulence, life changes, or whatever else may come along. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Investments in stocks or bonds issued by non-U.S. companies are subject to risks including country/regional risk and currency risk. Tax-loss harvesting involves certain risks, including, among others, the risk that the new investment could perform worse than the original investment, and that transaction costs could offset the tax benefit. There may also be unintended tax implications. We recommend that you consult a tax advisor before taking action. This webcast is for educational purposes only and does not take into consideration your specific circumstances or other factors that may be important in making investment decisions. We recommend that you consult a tax or financial advisor about your individual situation. Advice services are provided by Vanguard Advisers, Inc., a registered investment advisor, or by Vanguard National Trust Company, a federally chartered, limited-purpose trust company. © 2019 The Vanguard Group, Inc.
