Buddhist monks protest beer listing on stock exchange

SHOTLIST 1. Various Buddhist monks arriving outside Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) 2. Various monks carrying anti-alcohol banners and chanting outside the SET 3. Monks handing over letter of protest to Patareeya Benjapalachai, Deputy Manager of the SET 4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Venburi Thitakusalo, Thai Buddhist Monks National Coordination Centre: "The company needs to (be) concerned more about morality, because only getting the money and people die, don't care, people (have) accident, don't care. How can you get rich and not be concerned about people?" 5. Wide shot of monks with Patareeya Benjapalachai 6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Patareeya Benjapalachai, Deputy manager of the Thai Stock Exchange "Normally we have the regulation on receiving the company, so normally if the company meets the listing requirements they can get listed on the exchange." 7. Wide shot monks walking away from SET at end of protest STORYLINE: Chanting prayers, some 2,000 Buddhist monks gathered outside the Thai Stock Exchange (SET) in Bangkok on Friday to protest against the listing of a company producing Thailand's top-selling Elephant Beer. The monks said in a statement that the listing would present "a grave threat to the health, social harmony and time-honoured ethics of Thai culture". A decision on whether to list shares of Beer Chang - or Elephant Beer - is expected to be made by the SET's board next week. Cheap and potent, Beer Chang is the country's best-selling beer and is especially popular with rural drinkers. The company is owned by Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, Thailand's richest man. The Thai Buddhist Monks National Coordination Centre, which organised the protest, said the stock float threatened to exacerbate the spread of alcohol consumption in a country that already ranks very high among the world's drinking nations. The basic principles of Buddhism require followers to refrain from consuming alcohol and drugs, among other activities. Alcohol consumption among female teenagers increased by 600 percent between 1996 and 2003, the Buddhist group said. The statement said the SET's constitution states that the exchange only accepts shares for merchandise considered beneficial to the national well-being. Any economic benefits derived from the float would be offset by long-term state expenditures to fight alcohol-related diseases and crime, it said. Thailand Stock Exchange Governor Wants to Nurture Blockchain Startups

09:55
Thailand's government is about to begin licensing blockchain and cryptocurrency companies -- but was its new regulation born from a desire to be a leader in the field... or fear of investment fraud? If it's the latter, the country could fall behind when it should be nurturing digital economy startups, says Stock Exchange of Thailand governor Prinn Panitchpakdi, who spoke to Bitsonline at the recent Beyond Blocks Summit Bangkok. The Thailand Stock Exchange Shooting

01:02
An investor who went bankrupt playing the stock market pulled a gun Wednesday in the lobby of the Stock Exchange of Thailand and shot himself in the neck. ``My blood will help clean the stock market,″ Vivat Srisammasheap, 49, said later at Police General Hospital. The hospital wouldn’t discuss his condition. A nurse said the bullet passed through Vivat, but television reports said doctors removed it and he appeared to be recovering. Vivat was among a group of 70 to 80 investors who protested outside the exchange president’s office Wednesday, demanding changes in rules to boost stock prices that are at their lowest level in six months. The other investors left to deliver their demands to Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa, but Vivat pulled a gun. An exchange official spoke to him through a bullhorn as the exchange president made his way to the lobby. ``But he didn’t wait,″ said Suvicha Mingkwan, a spokesman for the stock exchange. Videotape of the shooting taken by a TV cameraman showed flashes coming from both ends of the pistol Vivat pressed against his neck. Police rushed in, kicked the gun away, and comforted him as he thrashed his arms about and started to bleed.

It'll bring down the price of alcohol drastically and then it'll be so cheap that children will be able to buy it instead of green tea." 15. Wide of crowd STORYLINE Shareholders in Thailand's largest beer and liquor maker approved a plan to list the company on the Thai and Singapore stock exchanges, as protests against the public listing continued on Monday. The Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) board was meeting on Monday to decide whether Thai Beverage is eligible to be listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Outside the Commission's office in Bangkok thousands of protesters, including about 100 Buddhist monks, waved flags and chanted against the potential listing of the company on Monday. The protest was spearheaded by Chamlong Srimuang, a former governor of Bangkok who's best known in the country for leading demonstrations that brought down the military government in 1992. "We cannot let alcohol to be in the stock market," Srimuang said, warning the commissioners that they would be violating Thai law if they allowed the listing of Thai Beverage. Srimuang didn't elaborate on the comment regarding the legality of publicly listing an alcoholic beverage maker. One woman, who joined the protest, said that if the company was allowed to go public "it'll bring down the price of alcohol drastically and then it'll be so cheap that children will be able to buy it instead of green tea". Protesters carried Thai flags and banners with slogans including: "Don't let alcohol ruin the lives of our younger generation." Kasemsant Weerakun, the company's vice president for corporate communications, said Thai Beverage was also waiting for approval by the SEC for a Singapore listing. Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, the chairman of Thai Beverage, recently accepted on principle an offer by the Singapore Exchange to list on the foreign market after Singapore authorities made their third approach to the company since last year. Buddhists protest beer company's launch on stock exchange

(20 Jul 2005) SHOTLIST 1. Various of thousands of protesters marching down one of Bangkok's main roads 2. Mid shot of police officers outside Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) building 3. Various of protesters outside the SET building, including activists on a stage 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Wannaree Nertetrai, Protester: "We try very hard to show our hard efforts and we hope that finally they will agree with people, the representatives of a lot of Thai people, to show their spirit against this idea." 5. Various of Buddhist monks chanting, during protest outside SET building 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Supanetto Pikku, Protester: "All the monks of Thailand, they do not agree with alcohol business into the market share stock (sic), because it is a very bad, a very sin stock." 7. Wide of crowd STORYLINE Thousands of people demonstrated on Wednesday outside the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) to protest plans by the country's largest beer company to list its shares on the market, saying the need to make a profit would encourage drinking. Police estimated the number of protesters at 3,000, but reporters believed it was closer to 10,000. The demonstrators were largely members of Buddhist religious organisations, inspired by the Buddhist principle of temperance. Many carried Thai flags, and banners with slogans such as "If you love Thailand, oppose the listing of alcoholic beverages on the SET." A group of about 200 monks led the crowd in chanted prayers. It occurred on the eve of one of the year's most important Buddhist holidays, Visakha Bucha. Opponents of listing Thai Beverage PCL, the country's largest beer and liquor maker, argue that the move would be tantamount to encouraging drinking, because of the need to make a profit. The basic principles of Buddhism, the main religion in Thailand, require followers to refrain from consuming alcohol and drugs, among other activities. Most Buddhists in Thailand, however, do not observe the rules very strictly, and beer consumption in the country is high. Muslims, whose religion also opposes drinking, were also among the protesters. The company brews Beer Chang "Elephant Beer" a powerful brew that is one of the country's top sellers. There are no beer or alcoholic drinks companies currently listed on the bourse. A similar protest about four months ago succeeded in having the company's application suspended but it is believed it might soon be renewed. Former Bangkok Governor Chamlong Srimuang, a long time political activist and devout Buddhist, said the protesters would submit some 63,000 signatures to Parliament later on Wednesday calling for a new law banning tobacco and alcoholic beverage companies from listing on the exchange. Under Thailand's constitution, ordinary citizens can propose a new law if they gather at least 50,000 signatures. Stock Exchange officials say there is currently no legal bar to the listing of an alcohol company. The beer company hoped to raise up to 40 (b) billion baht (1.04 (b) billion US dollars through its initial public offering, which would have been the biggest in the Thai market's history.
