This technique helps Teachers to increase attention in the lessons by chunking each lesson. Research: Joan Middendorf and Alan Kalish, in 1996 published a remarkably detailed account of the ebbs and flows of college students’ focus during a typical class. Breaking the session down minute by minute, the professors determined that students needed a three- to five- minute period of settling down, which would be followed by ten to eighteen minutes of optimal focus. Then—no matter how good the teacher or how compelling the subject matter— the kids would lose it. Attention would eventually return, but in ever briefer packets, falling to three or four minutes towards the end of a standard lecture. www.sproutsschools.com www.facebook.com/sproutsschool

Having started with the point that children learn easily and forget quickly, I have been working a lot on how to teach vocabulary to young learners by improving their memory skills. If it comes to memory, it is well worth searching about the brain. Throughout my search, I have found out that as long as the teachers meet the needs of the young brains, it is easier for the learners to remember new vocabulary items. In this presentation I’m planning to share my findings and ten practical brain- based activities that I use in my classes and find really effective. She puts her hands to her eyes to resemble a pair of glasses and says the phrase, "Hocus Pocus; everybody focus." The children respond with the same gesture and repeat the word, "focus." Are you looking for a strategy that allows you to do some lecture but also builds in time for student interaction? Well, in this video I'll explain the Ten Plus Two strategy. Even as adults, we tend to zone out when someone talks for an extended period of time. Think about it. We've all been to training sessions where the presenter simply stands in front of the audience and goes on and on and on about how to become a better teacher. The professional developments I tend to remember most are the ones where the presenter allowed the audience to become engaged in the session. The Ten Plus Two teaching strategy is perfect for building in student engagement. It's very easy to get caught up in teaching/talking that you forget to allow students to participate. If you were to use the Ten Plus Two method, however, it would naturally bring students into the learning experience.

At every stage of the learning process, teachers can guide students to develop a deeper understanding of new words. Teaching is extremely complex. At the most fundamental level, however, to be effective, the teacher must engage learners mentally to find out what they are thinking. Dr. Mike Clough, Associate Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, says that if you do those two things well, the payoff is tremendous. Watch this 7 1/2-minute clip to see Dr. Clough model several techniques that may be used in small or large classes to engage students mentally and reveal their thinking while he leads a class on how to teach effectively.
