Teachers [What Europe does for you]

Most people have heard of Erasmus, the EU’s successful student exchange programme, which has enabled millions to study abroad. Less well known is that teachers – from universities, schools, vocational colleges and adult education – can also take part. In 2015, over 100,000 teachers travelled abroad with the help of EU grants. Subscribe to EPRS 'What Europe does for you' Podcasts: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/rss/en/audio-podcasts.html

Study Abroad In France: A Nightmare

07:37
Hello Stalkers, Today I am sharing my experience as an exchange student in France, which was a nightmare. PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING 1 – Bigotry is not biased against one’s nationality. You can find them everywhere. However, knowing about ethnocentrism and experiencing it are two different things. In my mind I knew it might be a problem. I didn’t think it was going to be a problem on a daily basis. 2 – It isn’t all Sunshine and rainbow. There are times that I thought very dark thoughts about France, which was very abnormal for me. When I talked to others about it, I was told that it wasn’t normal, and that I wasn’t trying or focusing on the positive. Fact is studying/living abroad is difficult. There will be times you love it, and there will be times where you hate it. Hating your host country is normal and anyone who tells you differently is talking out of their butt. 3 – I’m biased when it comes to French schools since I only attended 1 high school, and I thought it was horrible. My teachers regularly started class by telling us we were lazy, stupid and nothing. I’ve talked about this with other French people and have learned that unfortunately this is a norm in French school. I also understand that the school system is meant to weed out weakness. However, from my perspective what the teachers are doing is mental and emotional abuse since as far as I know all scientific studies have shown negative reinforcement doesn’t work. My teachers weren’t teachers, they were public speakers. They refused to answer questions or explain anything because they had a lesson plan to get through. Every French student I knew had a tutor. Which made no sense to me. Since students were paid to teach younger students and the teachers got paid to do nothing. My school also offered zero support with anything no matter what the problem. I had some student bothering me, and not their problem. Our French lit teach came to school drunk, and not their problem. She stopped coming and it took them a trimester to replace her. 4 – Language. I had 3 years of French, which proved useless since the French I learned and what was spoken was different. E.G. “ne” is often dropped and words are shortened to the point of being unrecognizable. This can be an issue no matter what language you know. I never learned about the Literary tenses, because they “aren’t used often in French” which is the biggest lie ever! All my text books used them, and if you wrote essays you were supposed to use them. I asked my teachers if could write in the passe compose instead, and they just told me not to bother with the homework and test. Even though I did them they wouldn’t grade them. Unfortunately, older French people are particular about their language. It isn’t just against foreigners, it is against other French people as well. I had very few issues with people my own age. They were more than willing to speak slowly and say all the letters, they’d correct my French work books and explain why. I never had that with adults. Their response was I had no business in France because I didn’t already know the culture or language. 5 – France is a big place. While I meet a lot of tools on my first trip to France. I knew there were good people. My host family for example are the greatest and kindest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. They welcomed me into their home and treated me like I was their own daughter. To this day they are still Mama and Papa and are now Meme and Pepe to my children. However, that year was overshadowed by all the horrible people. 6 – This isn’t a French problem this is a person problem. I am not sharing this to Bash France. I went back to France, and the second time was completely different. I lived there for 10 years, and it became my home. However, there is a difference between being a citizen and foreigner. It doesn’t matter where you go, this will exist. Perhaps it won’t be as bad in one place than in others, but it is still there. If after all this I have offended you, then I am probably talking about you, and you are the problem. HOPE Exchange Programme Hosts

05:12
You are running a European hospital or healthcare institution? The European Hospital and Healthcare Federation (HOPE) invites you to join its Exchange Programme. Don't miss this opportunity to train your staff and to learn from the experience of foreign professionals. HOPE Exchange Programme consists in a 4-week training programme for professionals with managerial responsibilities working in hospitals and healthcare facilities. It is a practical and multi-professional experience. HOPE brings together participants from different backgrounds and responsibilities that meet abroad to learn from other healthcare systems. The exchange of knowledge between participants is also a powerful characteristic of the Programme. This experience gives participants and institutions the possibility of confronting different ways in organising healthcare services. It is also an opportunity to discover successful projects and good practices as well as to establis networks. Hundreds of organisations have already participed in the HOPE exchange programme. Join them! HOW TO PARTICIPATE Participation of candidates and host organisations is organized through the distribution of information (application forms, timetable, information sheets...) by national co-ordinators and depends on the willingness of the employing authority to grant special leave with pay to the candidates going abroad. Host organisations are requested to provide free accommodation as well as meals at a reasonable price. Each national co-ordinator of the HOPE Exchange Programme is responsible for the initial selection of the professionals and host organisations from his/her country for participation in the Exchange Programme and for the language proficiency of candidates. The application forms from candidates and host organisations are then sent to HOPE, that then assigns -- together with the national co-ordinators and within the scope of the offer of host organisations -- the candidates to the most appropriate host organisations. Efforts are made to facilitate the wishes of professionals in regard to the type of candidate a host organisation wants to host, but the final decision rests with HOPE. The emphasis of the programme is practical rather than academic and should also take into account the professional's specific motivation for joining the programme as well as the agreed theme for the year. Once the attachment is decided by HOPE, the professional has to contact his host organisation in order to arrange accommodation facilities and to discuss the individual exchange programme. The length of the exchange period is 4 weeks, starting in May for all the candidates and has been followed, since 1988, by an evaluation meeting and since 1992 also by a seminar in June, to which all professionals of the HOPE Exchange Programme are invited. Each year these meetings are organized in a different country by its national delegation of HOPE. During the evaluation meeting each professional is requested to contribute to a national presentation of his/her experiences abroad. The host organisations must send in an outline of the individual exchange programme of the professional before the training starts. A final report has to be drawn up at the end of the training by both the participant and the host organisation. Having completed their training the professionals receive a certificate for having participated in a European Exchange Programme. The national co-ordinator is also responsible for the organisation of a social programme for professionals coming to the country. This allows them to exchange ideas and experiences with other candidates in the host country. In addition, hosts will be asked to consider a social programme for their visitors recognising that some will be more independent than others. For more information and details concerning registration procedures, please contact the national co-ordinator of the country in which your organisations is located: http://www.hope.be/04exchange/nationalcoordinators/nationalcoordinators.html http://www.hope.be/

My Exchange

03:23
Almost a year ago, I packed all my things and decided to go on one of the most difficult and most amazing adventures of my 15 year old life. That adventure has taught me more than any teacher in my school will ever be capable of teaching. Things that you can't learn in a classroom. The past months have taught me things that only life can teach you. It would take ages, going into all of it now but this video was created to give a slight insight into what Exchange can do to one's life. I apologise for the cheesiness of it but I still hope some of you enjoy it and maybe even get inspired by this. Life's too short to wait. Go out there and don't just exist. Live. (Disclaimer: I showed this video on the 30th of June 2015 at the Last Supper, a celebration for all the International students who were leaving my school in New Zealand. I figured since so many people liked it, which i didn't expect at all, I would post it online. All clips are my own and so is the speech. Thank you so much for all the lovely comments. I'm glad you enjoyed it that much! )

My 1st Day of School as a Teacher in Sant Cugat, Spain | Filicanish Vlog Novela Numero Diez

12:42
After two months off between jobs, it's my first day back at work at a new job. I'm half way across the world from San Diego in Barcelona, Spain starting my new career as an English Teacher. We travel on the train 30 minutes up to Sant Cugat where I start my first day of School at Ciutat D'Alba teaching kids English at this Elementary School. A little worried, because I had no communication with my Coordinator, I went to the school not knowing what to expect. It turns out everything was fine and I find it very rewarding to teach kids a foreign language! After school is out, I head over to the famous Sagrada Familia where I meet up my friend Patrick. We take some pics, head to lunch and things start to make a turn for the worst. I end up with food poisoning later that night and the vlog does down with me! Before that, we make it up to Parc Güell for some of the most beautiful views in all of Barcelona. We meet an old friend at the top of the Parc and explore this beautiful parc on top of a hill which was designed by Antoni Gaudi! #Barcelona #Spain #SagradaFamilia #ParcGüell #Yuneec #FoodPoisoning #Filipino #Vlog #Jaycation #Filicanish #SantCugat Jay Jay's Social Media: Blog: onjaycation.com or jaycation.wordpress.com YouTube: youtube.com/jayjaymaniquis Facebook: facebook.com/jaycation Twitter: @Jaydaheat Snapchat/Instagram: jaydaheat Yelp: http://jaydaheat.yelp.com

Dangerous People Are Teaching Your Kids

Dangerous people are filling the heads of young people with dangerous nonsense. Who are these people? They are what Jordan Peterson calls “the post-modernists:” neo-Marxist professors who dominate our colleges and universities. And here’s the worst part: we are financing these nihilists with tax dollars, alumni gifts and tuition payments. Time to wise up. They are indoctrinating young minds throughout the West with their resentment-ridden ideology. They have made it their life's mission to undermine Western civilization itself, which they regard as corrupt, oppressive and “patriarchal.” If you're a taxpayer—or paying for your kid's liberal arts degree—you're underwriting this gang of nihilists. You're supporting ideologues who claim that all truth is subjective; that all sex differences are socially constructed; and that Western imperialism is the sole source of all Third World problems. They are the post-modernists, pushing “progressive” activism at a college near you. They produce the mobs that violently shut down campus speakers; the language police who enshrine into law use of fabricated gender pronouns; and the deans whose livelihoods depend on madly rooting out discrimination where little or none exists. Their thinking took hold in Western universities in the ‘60s and ‘70s, when the true believers of the radical left became the professors of today. And now we rack up education-related debt—not so that our children learn to think critically, write clearly, or speak properly, but so they can model their mentors' destructive agenda. It's now possible to complete an English degree and never encounter Shakespeare—one of those dead white males whose works underlie our “society of oppression.” To understand and oppose the post-modernists, the ideas by which they orient themselves must be clearly identified. First is their new unholy trinity of diversity, equity and inclusion. Diversity is defined not by opinion, but by race, ethnicity or sexual identity; equity is no longer the laudable goal of equality of opportunity, but the insistence on equality of outcome; and inclusion is the use of identity-based quotas to attain this misconceived state of equity. All the classic rights of the West are to be considered secondary to these new values. Take, for example, freedom of speech—the very pillar of democracy. The post-modernists refuse to believe that people of good will can exchange ideas and reach consensus. Their world is instead a Hobbesian nightmare of identity groups warring for power. They don't see ideas that run contrary to their ideology as simply incorrect. They see them as integral to the oppressive system they wish to supplant, and consider it a moral obligation to stifle and constrain their expression. High School Exchange Students in US Share Their Thoughts

04:01
This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com Twenty-six thousand foreign exchange students are in American high schools this year. We asked four teenagers who arrived in August to discuss their experience so far. All but one are attending public schools in Fairfax County, Virginia, outside Washington. Johanna is from Germany. She says the biggest difference is the relationship to the teachers. She says here the teachers are more like friends, and in Germany they are more like parents. Another difference? In American high schools, the students are usually the ones who move to different classrooms for different subjects. Johanna and Daniel come from schools where the teachers change classrooms. Daniel says: "In Austria, you have all classes together with the same group of people. And so you are really good friends with all the people you're in class with." Hande from Turkey is living with a host family in Denver, Colorado. She says students in Turkish schools have less choice. She says: "You cannot choose your own classes. And you dont have the right to drop out of one of them." Hande says Turkish schools are also more formal. She says: When a teacher comes into the class you have to stand up and greet the teacher. He or she says good morning or good afternoon and, as a class, you answer. We don't do this in class here." How does the education compare? Hande is in three Advanced Placement classes, which are meant to prepare students for college. She says: "A.P. courses are really hard and they really force you to learn and are really good. But the regular classes, their level is lower than in Turkey." Rosa is from a country where high school is five years, not four like in America. She says: "In Italy we go to school only during the morning for lessons. And Italian schools don't have other activities." On the other hand, she says, having to go elsewhere for activities is not necessarily a bad thing. She says she thinks students in Italy and Europe have a freer environment. They are in touch with a lot of different things that are outside the school. And that's the VOA Special English Education Report. To learn more about high school exchange programs, go to voaspecialenglish.com. You can also comment on this and other programs. And you can find us on YouTube and Twitter at VOA Learning English. English Language and Cultural Exchange Program

05:32
This is the summary project video of an English language and cultural exchange pilot project which took place in May 2009 and went on for 6 weeks. Two native English teachers, Holly and Jan, in Europe were asked to teach 17 Chinese teens in a 6 week pilot for 40min a week. 17 Chinese students, 6 weeks and 40min per week allows for 14min speaking time at the most. This does not include even any teacher talking time nor any microphone passing. So, what can be done? This project nicely demonstrates that by combining a variety of methods and above all by connecting the learners with other learners in other countries, the outcome of the project exceeded all expectations. A lively exchange on the NING site http://huangpu.ning.com, an active chat during the synchronous sessions, recordings by the students, recordings of virtual classroom activity and lastly the presentations during the final meeting, which were diligently prepared speak for itself. 115 slides of presentations, 105 of Word pages of text chat, 405 images, 6h 49min of recordings and countless comments on the NING site by the learners in English are the impressive result. Sadly 3 weeks prior to the final ceremony the NING site was banned by the Chinese government (youtube is banned too and so is blip.tv). In order for the students in China to be able to see their work, teachertube.com was being used to upload all the outcomes.

Japan School Exchange Trip to London: A Teacher Mini Vlog

14:59
After years of preparation and planning, the elementary school I work for in Japan had its second group of 16 6th grade students travel to London, England to participate in a school homestay and exchange program with 2 schools in England. The students (and teacher chaperones) had a wonderful time during program. What an incredible opportunity for our young students to experience life in a foreign country, develop independence and be able to share and communicate with children from different cultures. This is just a small glimpse into some of the things we did during our 10 day visit. For privacy reasons, I did not share any of the students in the videos or the names of the participating schools. But I think you can still get a good idea of the type of activities which can be successfully implemented into making an international exchange at the elementary school level a successful one. A huge thank you to our host schools, the host country and cities and of course, all of the participants who helped make this exchange program possible. It is truly amazing what teache

Information on how to participate in teacher exchange: The IEU arranges teacher exchanges between our members and teachers in the UK, all provinces in Canada, Colorado USA and, in the past, International Schools in Europe. To be eligible to apply for exchange, teachers must have a minimum of five years teaching experience at the time of exchange. The period of the exchange varies also. In the UK and Canada, it is usually the Australian school year. In International Schools, it is usually the Northern Hemisphere school year, ie August/September to June. Mid-year exchanges to Canada are also becoming more popular, ie the Australian teacher finishes here at the end of Term 2 and arrives in Canada/UK in the summer and has their BIG break before they commence their exchange. The overseas teacher commences their exchange at the beginning of Term 3 and will enjoy their summer break (they will have two summers then) at the end of Term 2 the following year. Some Canadian Catholic Boards will only allow their teachers now to exchange to the Canadian school years. Geoff Dickson, from Xavier Catholic College in Cranebrook, has just returned from a 12 month mid-year exchange; view the video here! This could be you in 2013! Teachers on exchange continue to be paid by their home employer and their exchange year counts as service for all purposes eg accumulation of leave entitlements and incremental progression. Usually, teachers exchange accommodation. If this is not possible, a commitment to provide suitable accommodation is required. Applications are now being taken for 2013. Please call Helen Gregory on 9779 3200 or email [email protected] For more information on the teacher exchange program, look up www.ieu.asn.au (teacher exchange) ----- Edited & filmed by D.P.L for the IEU publications department. "David" - ELP Administrator - "What Counts as Academic on Campus"

08:23
This video is an artifact of the Carter Winkle narrative inquiry PhD dissertation thesis, "A Narrative Inquiry into Corporate Unknowns: Faculty Experiences Concerning Privatized-Partnership Matriculation Pathway Programs." Videos of constructed narratives from the study are read by colleagues of the researcher: they are not the actual participants. All participant, institution, and corporate-partner company names are pseudonyms. Click on the "WinkleAtBarryU" channel link for additional information. Below is an introduction to the study participant: David Pullman is a former Director of the JVP-affiliated matriculation pathway program at Bay City University in Waterside, California. Like many involved with English-language education, David came to teaching through an interest in foreign languages and international travel; both his high school and undergraduate studies focused on foreign languages. After working briefly in the tourism industry in Europe, David's first English-language teaching experience was through a teacher-exchange program in Asia. "It was a government-sponsored program working in public Junior and High schools. Like me, most of these people were completely inexperienced as teachers, the requirement being that we were mostly native English speakers who could, you know, demonstrate good values and be cultural ambassadors." After several years in Asia, David was hired by a Korean school in Central Europe to teach English and French, still without any formal credentials or master's degree. "You can get by for awhile without a graduate degree, but I eventually decided to go to London for a master's in TESOL." When David began teaching in the United States, he worked at a number of for-profit, private language schools, mainly through hourly-paid assignments. David was then hired by a British company to open and operate a new private English-language school, which he directed for nearly ten years. During that time, David became heavily involved with the leadership with the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation. He participated in accreditation site visits and established relationships with numerous language-program directors and faculty, many of whom worked in academic IEPs on college and university campuses. Experiencing "just a little bit of burnout" from his directorship with the private language school, David began exploring the possibility of finding an administrative position with a university-based IEP. A former colleague alerted David to a position at Bay City University as an Assistant Director of the ELI, and he applied: unaware at the time that he would one day direct this program, and additionally, be asked to take on the responsibility of directing a matriculation pathway program recently begun as a result of a partnership between Bay City University and Joint Venture Partnerships, Inc.

"David" - ELP Administrator - "Credit-Bearing Content Curriculum"

06:33
