Ep 3: The Cost Of Building A Startup Mobile Application

08:37
How Much Will My App Cost? This is quite a difficult question to answer. Every app's unique and as such, there's no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to putting a price on your app idea. In this video we talk about our 11 items you must take into consideration when thinking beyond the concept and idea of your app. What’s important is to figure out which of these requirements are the most important to design your minimum viable product. If you can think about these keys points prior to talking to your developer, it will be much easier from them to come up with an estimate for your app. To read the blog version of this episode, click this link: http://www.buzinga.com.au/buzz/how-much-does-app-development-cost/ Or to learn more about mobile app development, check out the Buzinga website! www.buzinga.com.au
How to Build a Mobile App from Idea to Build to Monetisation to Scaling

27:28
In this video I show you how to take your mobile app idea to designing & building it and most importantly monetising your idea so you can build a real business that is bringing you money. It is actually very easy to build a mobile app. The hardest part is coming up with the idea and then next hardest part is following through & executing fully. This year I have been mentored by Ian Scarffe who has showed me how to build an app using Lean Startup. His advice has been nothing short of incredible and I strongly recommend utilising him as a mentor for any projects that you might have. He can be found on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/ianscarffe for anyone who would like a great mentor on Lean Startup.

And these apps can help you write a business plan for your startup or mobile app. The apps also put you in touch with a live person who can provide expert help and answer any questions you may have about a business plan for a startup or a mobile app.. In this tutorial I explain how to write a business plan for a startup or a mobile app. One key difference between a business plan for a new website or a new kind of a mobile app, and a traditional business plan is that in case of a website or an app, there are many unknowns so writing a full business plan makes less sense since we just do not know many of the variables. So while it is good to have a business plan because it will help you to organize your thoughts and ideas when you put them on paper, because there are so many unknowns, in the web startup ecosystem, there is a very strong emphasis on actually testing the ideas out in the market. So when you write your business plan, also have a strategy for how you can quickly and cheaply build a prototype that you can put into the hands of customers. Your customers will give you feedback and you can use that feedback to improve the product. This is the LeanStartup approach by Eric Ries and Steve Blank. Here are links to learn more about them. How to Start an App Business (2016 APP BUSINESS GUIDE)

► START YOUR FREE APP BUSINESS COURSE: https://youtu.be/Yl-M-OxjQB8 FOLLOW US on FACEBOOK ► https://facebook.com/waypedia FOLLOW US on TWITTER ► https://twitter.com/waypedia APP PROMOTION ► https://waypedia.com 1. App Market Research The very first thing which we tell our clients and all the entrepreneurs out there is to study the market. You must learn to plan ahead. Go out and see what other developers are doing, read their stories of failure and success. Social apps and gaming apps are the biggest success which you can think of. The biggest reason for them being successful is the fact that these are the most liked and simple apps to use. Look at the current trends, you must know what is happening right now. Understand your to-be-users behavior. You must serve them exactly what they need and this can be done only by proper market research. Get to know how successful developers started their journeys. The most important part being the funds which they arranged. You must start planning your funding at least 3-4 months before you start with your app. Funds are going to be the backbone of your business. Being realistic is again very crucial, don’t think about what people would need after 5 years, think of now. With time you will automatically be able to improvise your app and meet the demand of your users (a good long term team is key if you want to ease the future updates!). Your idea is going to be the unique selling point, therefore do not rush on monetizing your app in the first stance. But, don’t avoid it forever. You need to have a vision on what are you going to sell. Work on your idea, make it absolutely unique and very clear, keeping on mind on what are you going to sell/offer in the future. Lastly, arrange your funds and keep it very clear about your launch time. If you want to launch an app in Christmas then make sure you have started your work somewhere around July or August. Use your common sense, don’t release products that are meant for summer, on winter. 2. App Development a. Simplicity: Your app must be very simple in terms of functionality and design. Even a 10 years old should understand it. The app must be straightforward making people understand in less than 10 seconds. If people fail to understand it quickly then they are going to uninstall your app right away. Twitter is a classic example where most of the people have not liked its interface or have hard time understanding their mechanics, loosing their power against Instagram and Snapachat. b. Functionality: Don’t go over the top. You shouldn’t be concentrating on making your app the most striking one, rather be concerned about minimalist functions. It should have everything that is required to work and nothing else. Check this video if you want to learn more about this topic. c. Easiness of updates: This is a very important point. Your app should not be fussy about updates. Too many and too little updates are going to spoil users for you. Google is very fast as compared to iOS in terms of updates and software technologies. Your app must be able to meet each and every requirement at the right time. d. Security: Make your app very secure. Around 50% of the Waypedia revenue is spent in security! Do not cut your cost on this element as security ensures that you have get to have your user’s trust and loyalty. 3. App Marketing Here is the last but a very crucial point to be noted. You have done your research and have developed a brilliant app but now you need to go out and sell it. Marketing would require lot of money, therefore, you must set the right budget and plan way ahead. Make sure that your content is saleable, it is unique and serves its purpose well. Hire specialists if you are absolutely new to marketing. Marketing is a completely different world than developing an app and requires full time attention. Use all forms of social media from Facebook to YouTube to Twitter and even Snapchat. Spend a lot of time on your app and try to connect with people via live chats. Create a website of your own and cross-promote your app on it. Cross-promoting is a very important element of app business (and the cheapest one!). Targeting specific audience becomes very easy when you promote your app via social media but it is very expensive at the same time as well, so do it through content instead of upselling all right on their faces. There must be a landing page to your website no matter where you promote your app. Share a couple of links, create blogs and maybe have some interactive sessions with people. Your app must be a seller and it should have some impact on your users. App business requires you to make your users understand your app’s need. Explain how your app is going to change their life. Design your app’s looks as per the group of people you want to target and focus on the social media platforms that represent them. Don’t waste time on mediums where your users ARE NOT!

Your single biggest mistake when starting an App business

02:55
► Subscribe to Waypedia's Channel Here: https://goo.gl/j6I9jr App entrepreneur is quite a popular term among many of us. Having your own app gives you a great platform to set up a successful career where you make a lot of money as well as create a product which is of high utility. It is indeed great to go out and create something related to technology as that is where the future belongs. The problem starts when you end up committing certain mistakes and make a blunder of your app. One of the biggest single mistake which a new app developer or as we popularly call them app entrepreneurs makes is to focus solely on making money fast, now, under any circumstances no matter if the app is well designed or not. We can break this on 3 inter-related mistakes and have a cascading effect, where one mistake leads to the other and then the whole process turns out to be a failure. Let’s take a look at these: 1. Too much focus on monetization: this is a common human problem, we want things and we want them fast. Apps are known to give plenty of monetization opportunities once they are popular and this is why most of the new app developers have concentrated too much on getting quick money with such apps. Too much of focus on monetization leads to ignorance on how your product is actually performing. You start concentrating on advertisements, valuation of the company and do anything to get new clients or customers. This is where one loses focus on the product which leads to an overall poor app and its productivity. 2. Copy clones of already existing apps: You see a new app and all of a sudden you realize that this is quite an uncommon app and that there is an opportunity to make a similar one; you end up making the second mistake. There are apps which are quite uncommon but even then they are in plenty. This is 2016 and making the same old app won’t do. Nobody likes to install the same thing once they get it in the form of a similar app before. You must rather concentrate on making something new and unique. Even if you look around you will find that the original app has 100 times more download than a copied one. 3. Lack of proper planning: lastly, the lack of proper planning regarding the marketing strategies, funding strategies and soft launch hurts your app even more. New app entrepreneurs are busy making plans regarding the monetization area and thus important decisions relating to marketing, funding and launch are overlooked. The first mistake of too much focus on monetization leads to this one. This is where an app starts approaching its end. As a new app developer one must concentrate on doing each and everything in the right proportion, too much of anything leads to an abrupt end. Ask any of the successful app developer and they will warn you about these three mistakes. Overlooking these 3 mistakes would prove to be another major mistake! One must concentrate on getting the basics right initially and then proceed with monetization. Once you have a great and saleable product then monetization will come automatically. You need to promote your app among the right audience and at the right time and also keep in mind that you have something unique to offer. These things will ensure that your app thrives in the long run. How To Build a Software Company With No Money | Dan Martell

11:09
Thinking about hiring your first developer? Don’t rush into it. First, make sure you’re not building a product nobody wants. In this video, I teach how to test your software idea without writing any code whatsoever. Are you an entrepreneur? Get free weekly video training here: http://www.danmartell.com/newsletter + Join me on FB: http://FB.com/DanMartell + Connect w/ me live: http://periscope.tv/danmartell + Tweet me: http://twitter.com/danmartell + Instagram awesomeness: http://instagram.com/danmartell - Technology adoption lifecycle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_adoption_life_cycle - Tools for prototyping your software: balsamiq.com, uxpin.com, invisionapp.com Can you build a thriving software business without writing code? Can you generate real revenues without having anything built? The answer is yes, and I personally believe that it’s the only way to do it. A couple weeks ago I was in San Francisco hosting my Sales Pipeline Intensive event for my SaaS Academy clients, and one of the speakers John (founder of five9.com, $1.2B saas company) echoed a similar sentiment... It was funny because we hadn’t connected prior to his talk. So I did some research on his latest company JetBridge.com, and it mentioned all the different areas they were innovating sales using AI/Machine Learning, and when he comes up, he just smiled and said “oh, all that’s bullshit” ???? It was all made up. :) Well, in his defense, at this point they did have a product in the outbound calling space that did have revenues and customers, but the rest was just positioning... .. to allow them to get customers and learn fast. And that’s what I want to teach you today as you continue on your journey building a software company (or any business for that matter). You don’t need to have it built before you sell it. And even better, if you don’t, I’ll show you a way you can get your future customers to finance its development... Watch this week’s video to learn the exact same structure that one of my coaching clients Ryan used to generate $200K for his first prototype that he pre-sold. When you build innovation there’s a few things you need to understand... one of the first is you can’t sell it to big, old, slow moving companies. You need to find innovative and early adopting companies... ... so I share a framework to make this easy called the Technology Adoption Curve. Also, once you have the idea, most founders will build it first then show it to customers. But what I recommend instead is to build a Clickable Prototype, design a Customer Advisory Board and then co-create it with them. Finally, if you want to ensure you get real commitment from your customers, then you’ll need to get them to throw down with some money. True “Customer Validation” doesn’t occur until there’s some kind of financial commitment made... ... without it, it’s just a bunch of nice people grin [email protected]*ng you. It’s the kiss of death for a startup founder. Have you ever tested an idea for your startup? What creative ways - like my buddy John - did you use to test your idea? Leave a comment below and let me know. I share a few others in my video from my previous startups Flowtown & Clarity as well. Can’t wait to read yours. Till next week. Dan “sell before you build” Martell Don't forget to share this entrepreneurial advice with your friends, so they can learn too: https://youtu.be/wlouEWnEFVQ ===================== ABOUT DAN MARTELL ===================== “You can only keep what you give away.” That’s the mantra that’s shaped Dan Martell from a struggling 20-something business owner in the Canadian Maritimes (which is waaay out east) to a successful startup founder who’s raised more than $3 million in venture funding and exited not one... not two... but three tech businesses: Clarity.fm, Spheric and Flowtown. You can only keep what you give away. That philosophy has led Dan to invest in 33+ early stage startups such as Udemy, Intercom, Unbounce and Foodspotting. It’s also helped him shape the future of Hootsuite as an advisor to the social media tour de force. An activator, a tech geek, an adrenaline junkie and, yes, a romantic (ask his wife Renee), Dan has recently turned his attention to teaching startups a fundamental, little-discussed lesson that directly impacts their growth: how to scale. You’ll find not only incredible insights in every moment of every talk Dan gives - but also highly actionable takeaways that will propel your business forward. Startup Valuation - How Are Startups Worth Billions?

14:11
You’ll learn about Startup Valuation in this lesson, and see how a traditional methodology such as the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis applies to early-stage tech startups with no revenue. http://breakingintowallstreet.com/ "Financial Modeling Training And Career Resources For Aspiring Investment Bankers" Table of Contents: 2:59 A DCF Analysis for Piped Piper 9:01 What’s Required for a Startup DCF/Valuation to Work 12:35 Recap and Summary How Are Startups Worth Billions of Dollars? “I don’t understand how tech startups can be worth billions of dollars – many of them aren’t even making money yet!” “How can an unprofitable company that isn’t even generating revenue possibly be worth so much? Doesn’t this violate all the principles of valuation?” We get questions like the ones above all the time. The short answer is NO, startup valuation doesn’t violate all the principles. You can still use standard methodologies such as the DCF, but you have to use radically different assumptions that make the analysis less grounded in reality. For the numbers to work, the startup has to start making A LOT of money very quickly in the NEAR FUTURE. If it takes 10-15 years to generate revenue, it will be almost impossible for the numbers to work; but if it happens in the next 2-3 years, it might be plausible. As an example, we look at Pied Piper in this lesson, the fictional company from the HBO show “Silicon Valley.” They make money with a file compression and storage app, and they’re aiming to get hundreds of millions of users and then get a tiny percentage of them using their paid services. So if they currently generate no revenue and have just received $100 million in funding at a $1 billion valuation, is that crazy? A DCF for Pied Piper We assume massive app download growth in the early years, with the company reaching ~500 million annual downloads and ~150 million paid users by the end of Year 10. Revenue goes from 0 to nearly $2 billion over that time frame. The company goes from negative Operating Income to nearly $500 million (25% margin) and almost $300 million in Free Cash Flow. We use a 100x EBITDA multiple to calculate the Terminal Value (arguably fair for a $2 billion company growing at nearly 40% per year). These assumptions are highly speculative, and so we also have to use a much higher Discount Rate: 50%, compared with the standard 8-12% figures you see for mature companies. As a result of all this, far more value comes from the Present Value of the Terminal Value: 99% here, vs. 50-70% for normal companies (and ideally less than that!). The whole valuation is dependent on a huge number of assumptions that are impossible to know in advance: Will billions of people download the app? Will ~5% of users convert to paying customers? Will the company be able to monetize in only 2-3 years’ time? These assumptions might turn out to be true, but there’s a very high chance they might not be – which explains the 50% Discount Rate. Startup Valuation Myths So the DCF does “work” for startups; it’s just not that useful because of all the required assumptions and the inability to guesstimate the numbers for a pre-revenue company. For a valuation to make sense, the company has to start generating money *very quickly* – if it takes ten years for that to happen, the numbers will be even harder to justify. And since the majority of the implied value comes from the Terminal Value, the Terminal Multiple and Terminal Growth Rate are incredibly important. They matter more than long-term profit margins because almost no value comes from the Present Value of Free Cash Flows. How To Validate Your Startup Ideas | Dan Martell

05:48
Have you really validated the need for your product before building it? Do you know how to pre-sell your product before it's made? In this video, I share my best strategies for validating your startup ideas. Are you an entrepreneur? Get free weekly video training here: http://www.danmartell.com/newsletter + Join me on FB: http://FB.com/DanMartell + Connect w/ me live: http://periscope.tv/danmartell + Tweet me: http://twitter.com/danmartell + Instagram awesomeness: http://instagram.com/danmartell Want to know why building a tech startup is TWICE as hard as opening a restaurant? It’s because both the product AND the market are unknown. They need to be figured out... ... for a sushi restaurant you just need to know if people in your city eat sushi - which most do. So the risk is only in building a great restaurant experience... the market & “product” are proven. With tech, it comes down iterating and testing both of these assumptions. 1. Will the product actually do what I think it will (technology / science / etc). 2. Will anyone want it? The cool part is both of these can be figured out fairly quickly if you do it right. One word of caution: It does NOT require an MVP (Minimum Viable Product). Actually, I have a huge problem with the term MVP because it has the word “product” in it. I have a much different (and far more cost+time efficient) approach that I cover in today’s video. It really comes down to a few simple frameworks that I’ve created to help you validate your ideas... and generate the confidence (and initial funding) you need to go all in. Here they are: 1. Idea: Problem, Pain, Passion 2. Validated Research 3. Clickable Prototype 4. Pre-Sales I’ve used this approach to build ALL of my companies and it doesn’t matter if it’s for a consumer application, or a solution for big Fortune 500 companies - it can be done. So before you pour your savings (and next 6 months) into building an “MVP”... … take 5 mins right now to watch today's video and make sure you’re setting yourself up for success right out of the gates. Have an incredible day! With gratitude, – Dan Don't forget to share this entrepreneurial advice with your friends, so they can learn too: https://youtu.be/3_A5JNLeHAQ ===================== ABOUT DAN MARTELL ===================== “You can only keep what you give away.” That’s the mantra that’s shaped Dan Martell from a struggling 20-something business owner in the Canadian Maritimes (which is waaay out east) to a successful startup founder who’s raised more than $3 million in venture funding and exited not one... not two... but three tech businesses: Clarity.fm, Spheric and Flowtown. Ignite your idea -- why you are ready to launch a startup | Jen Storey | TEDxQUT

14:13
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Do you have a great business idea? How do you go from having an idea to having a business? Jen Storey breaks the process down from how to asses the viability of your idea, to what are the first steps to take. Jen is a writer, editor and her gun is for hire. Digital is her thing. She’s been in digital for more years than most readers of this biography have had birthdays. Really. Her Masters Thesis was on how this World Wide Web thingy was going to change corporate communications forever. That was in 1996. Since then, she has worked across all areas of digital, innovation and startups. She has created startups within enterprises like ACP, McKinsey & Co and Suncorp. She was a founding team member of AOL in Australia. And, she sat on the VC side of the fence before entering the world of banking. Seven years ago, after a moment of clarity, she left the corporate world and launched into creating her own niche in innovation execution and digital marketing. Now, the CMO and Practice Lead at boutique consultancy edgelabs, she advises businesses, from enterprises to startups, on innovation execution and digital disruption. She has been named in the top 50 influencers in the Australian start-up scene. Jen is the current editor of Anthill, an online business publication without the boring bits created for entrepreneurs, business builders and innovators. She is also the Australia and New Zealand writer analyst for the global online classified researcher, AIM Group. Plus, she’s an Advisory Board Member for Ice Cream Day, a non-profit organisation created by an 11 year old with a dream. She’s an avid scuba diver and, thanks to her seven year old daughter, knows quite a lot about penguins. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The Business Model Canvas - 9 Steps to Creating a Successful Business Model - Startup Tips

09:42
The Business Model Canvas - 9 Steps to Creating a Successful Business Model - Startup Tips The Business Model Canvas, is a strategic management and entrepreneurial tool. It allows you to describe, design, challenge, invent, and pivot your business model. The Business Model Canvas is comprised of 9 key segments: The left hand section of the Business Model Canvas is the Infrastructure section and comprises three key areas: Key Activities: The most important activities in executing a company's value proposition. Key Resources: The resources that are necessary to create value for the customer. Partner Network: In order to optimize operations and reduce risks of a business model, organization usually cultivate buyer-supplier relationships so they can focus on their core activity. The middle section of the canvas describes the business offering and is the value proposition delivered to different customer segments. Value Propositions: The collection of products and services a business offers to meet the needs of its customers. According to Osterwalder, (2004), a company's value proposition is what distinguishes itself from its competitors. The value proposition provides value through various elements such as newness, performance, customization, "getting the job done", design, brand/status, price, cost reduction, risk reduction, accessibility, and convenience/usability. The value propositions may be: Quantitative – price and efficiency Qualitative – overall customer experience and outcome The right hand side of the Business Model Canvas describes the customers, the channels through which you deliver services and and the relationships you have with your customers. Customer Segments: To build an effective business model, a company must identify which customers it tries to serve. Various sets of customers can be segmented based on the different needs and attributes to ensure appropriate implementation of corporate strategy meets the characteristics of selected group of clients. Channels: A company can deliver its value proposition to its targeted customers through different channels. Effective channels will distribute a company’s value proposition in ways that are fast, efficient and cost effective. An organization can reach its clients either through its own channels (store front), partner channels (major distributors), or a combination of both. Customer Relationships: To ensure the survival and success of any businesses, companies must identify the type of relationship they want to create with their customer segments. The bottom section of the canvas describes the finances. Cost Structure: This describes the most important monetary consequences while operating under different business models. A company's DOC. Revenue Streams: The way a company makes income from each customer segment. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIypuA7lS-FsVG6cMlNCK2w?sub_confirmation=1 Check out some of our other videos Compensation claims - how long should it take https://youtu.be/NuxfrgSTg78 LLC vs S Corp https://youtu.be/4xNCnf9hitw Minizing tax https://youtu.be/ybSnFb6rx6Y How to fund a startup https://youtu.be/ctzDb59sw5M Kickstarter success Ep 1 https://youtu.be/2EG78JNZ7nA Kickstarter success Ep 2 https://youtu.be/ZMlq5CmUNz8 How to pitch to investors with Guy Kawasaki https://youtu.be/-epR-uGlv4M If you are interested in sustainability issues then check this video out The Sustainable Business Model Canvas https://youtu.be/gVimMEI2u2w
