Full-Screen page layouts can really come in handy in the world of web design. One main benefit of a full-screen page layout is visibility. With full-screen pages, all your page content remains within the browser window. In a world where users are quick to scroll, having all of your content contained within the browser viewport from the start can be refreshing for the viewer and could also help with conversions. If you are familiar with Divi, you should already know about the fullwidth header module that has full-screen functionality built in. This is a wonderful solution for creating full-screen pages with minimal content. But if you want to take advantage of building a full-screen page layout using a regular section with multiple rows and modules, this is the post for you. I’ll show you a few simple tricks to make sure your page content (even the header and footer bar) fit within your browser window and then scale nicely on different browser sizes. Product Links in the description are typically affiliate links that let you help support the channel at no extra cost. MOST IMPORTANT TIPS for working in Layout In this video, I figured I’d make a video summing up some of the most important content so far for modeling for creating architectural drawings in Layout. Before I get started, I do want to thank my newest supporter on Patreon, William Fowler. Patreon is the website where you can support creators that you like on YouTube, so if you like what I’m doing on this channel, please check out that link in the notes down below. If you’re looking for more information on Layout, please make sure to check out thesketchupessentials.com/layout – I’m building that into a hub of information and resources about layout, so if you’re looking for more tutorials and other Layout information, that’s the place to go. Also, leave a comment below and let me know what resources/tutorials you’d like to see on that page. Tip 1 – Turn off Perspective When working in a SketchUp model, by default it has a perspective camera view, meaning that all the sight lines in the model run to a vanishing point. This is great for 3D views, but when you’re trying to create floor plans and elevations, you just want to have a straight up and down view. Go to the camera menu, then select “Parallel Projection” to turn off perspective to get the proper view for those floor plans. Tip 2 – Understand the difference between Raster, Vector, and Hybrid Layout has 3 different ways that it can render your images, and each has its own benefits. Vector rendering renders your lines so that they’re crisp and smooth, but does not render things like materials, so they’ll show up just as shaded colors. Raster renders complex materials, but your lines will show up choppy in your images. Finally, hybrid is a combination of both, allowing you to generate smooth lines and materials, but it comes at the cost of increasing rendering times on your PC. Knowing the difference can save you a lot of time in your models. Tip 3 – Use the preserve scale on resize check box One of the things that can be a little frustrating for new users of Layout is trying to resize and place drawings in your models. The reason for this is that often when bringing a new image into Layout, the images often lose their scale if you try to resize them. However, if you look in the SketchUp Model tab, make sure to check the “Preserve Scale on Resize” button to lock in your scale, so you can resize viewports without changing the scale of your models Tip 4 – Layer Views by unchecking the box for “Background” The way that you create your plans in Layout is by layering views on top of each other. However, sometimes you’ll try to drop a view on top of another view and you’ll find that it blocks the view beneath it. However, if you go into the styles viewport and uncheck the box for “Background,” Layout will make the background of your view transparent so you can stack it on top of your other layers. Tip 5 – Organize your model properly There’s probably no more important tip for working in layout than making sure that your model is organized properly. Because of the way that Layout works, you need to be able to turn layers and groups on and off to generate the plans that you’re looking for. If you start organizing your model as soon as you start modeling, this can be a fairly painless process. That’s where I’m going to end this video – leave a comment below and let me know what you thought. What tips do you have for working in Layout?

Let’s start by just drawing a very rough title block – line on the right, box at the lower right hand corner, then we’ll start adding some text. Before we do that, I need to introduce you to the concept of AutoText. AutoText is text that Layout will automatically fill in for you based on information that is set in your model – it’s almost like the text version of a component from SketchUp. You can see what AutoText information is available by going up to “File,” “Document Setup,” “Auto-Text.” These are the Items that are already in as AutoText, and you can adjust their values within this area. For example, let’s add our Address to our title bar. To start, add a text box with the value "Address" in it to your title bar. Now, change your address in the AutoText section. Notice that the text in your actual document changes to match what you’ve entered in your Document Setup. You can adjust the style of your text within the “Text Style Section.” Now, let’s add a logo in the upper right hand corner – just go to “File,” “Insert,” and find your logo image. In this case, we’re going to use the AutoText for "Page Number", along with a letter and a pair of numbers. You can add a page description section, dates, and other information in here as well. Notice that you can create a border around a text box by selecting “Stroke” in the “Shape Style” section. You can draw lines to separate your various sections, and adjust the way they look using the “Stroke” option in your Shape Style section of your tray. Now, let’s talk about getting this to show up on all your pages (or at least most of your pages). First, you’re going to want to select all of this. You can group it or not – I’d probably group it. Then, you need to add a layer for Title Block, and put all this geometry on that layer. You can check it by toggling it on or off. You should be able to drag it down near the bottom. Then, assuming you want this to show up on every page, you need to click the option for Share Layer Across Pages. This will result on this layer showing up in the same location across every page. You may want to click the lock button to keep from accidentally editing your title block. However, sometimes you have pages you don’t want this to show up on – simply turn the layer off on those pages! Now, let’s adjust our page numbering so numbering doesn’t start until after the first page. Simply go up to your Document Setup again and use the drop down to select the page you’d like your numbering to begin on. Finally, you can save this block as a template so you can use it in future projects by simply going up to “File,” “Save as Template,” and saving it under your “My Templates” folder. Product Links in the description are typically affiliate links that let you help support the channel at no extra cost. If you remember, I recently did a video on using multiple section cuts to simulate section cut widths within SketchUp. That definitely works within SketchUp for adjusting the visibility within your model. However, this can also get really complicated when dealing with having to create different groups, put the different section cuts within the groups, etc. In this video, I’m going to talk about how you can quickly adjust views within Layout using clipping masks to show only what you want. If you’re looking for more Layout tutorials, make sure to check out my Layout resources page at www.thesketchupessentials.com/layout. My 3D Warehouse example model for today’s video is the Beach House by Sz. Christophe. I will link to this model, in addition to all of his other models, in the notes down below. In this case, I’m going to take a section cut view through this house. We’ll go ahead and create a view that we’ll then export to layout. You’ll notice that this view shows a cut through the entire house. Let’s go ahead and export this view to Layout. You can do this by going to File, Send to Layout. This will then bring up Layout. Select a page template if you haven’t already, then click ok. This will bring up your view within Layout as a viewport. Now let’s set a scale within our model. Pick a scale that you think best fits within the page we’re trying to create – in this case for me, this means a scale of 3/8” = 1’0”. Now that our image is sized, we’re going to create a clipping mask to hide the parts of the model we don’t want to see. To do this, we’re going to draw a box over our view that covers the areas of the model we want to see within our viewport. Once you’ve drawn your box over your image, you need to select both the box and the viewport, then go up into edit, and select the option for “create clipping mask.” This will mask out all areas of your model that aren’t covered by the rectangle you drew. Now, as you can see, you’re showing only the parts of your viewport that you’d like to show. If you decide you want to adjust your mask, simply go up to edit, and select “Release clipping mask” to turn off the mask so that you can make edits. If you guys are interested, I can make another video on using clipping masks to create enlarged details in Layout – leave a comment and let me know!

Product Links in the description are typically affiliate links that let you help support the channel at no extra cost. I wanted to talk about a couple different ways you can display details in your layout documents. 1. The first way is obviously the easiest – simply create a 3D view of your detail, then import that viewport into Layout (Detail Credit – Metal Coping Detail by International Masonry Institute). One thing to note if you do this is that you can only set it to a scale if you turn your perspective view off. These details can actually be very helpful for contractors as they show/indicate in a 3D space how the assembly actually looks. 2. Option 2 – Model your detail in SketchUp, then create a 2D view and import into Layout. This works in a very similar manner to if you were to create a building elevation. Simply create your view, then save and create a workspace with your scene. 3. Option 3 – Draw your details directly in Layout. I find this option to be a bit clunky – I’m not a giant fan of the way things inference in Layout, but you can directly draw within a model in layout with the “Make Scaled Drawing” option. Simply select your scale and start drawing. 4. Option 4 – You can also adjust your details that you get out of SketchUp by drawing over them to allow for patterns, hatching, and other information. I’m also going to link to a couple videos from SketchUp and Nick Sonder where he talks about creating details. If you’re looking for more layout resources, make sure to check out www.thesketchupessentials.com/layout. That’s where I’m going to end this video.

Hey Divi Nation, thanks for joining us for the next installment of our weekly Divi Design Initiative; where each week, we give away a brand new, free Divi Layout Pack from our design team to you. This week Kenny and his team have created a Web Agency Layout Pack with seven different page layouts that will provide everything a Web Agency will need to get up and running in minutes. This layout pack includes some important "must haves" for a Web Agency, including a pricing page, a services page, and a portfolio page. The design is tastefully colorful and clean throughout. The background images stage the content in creative and effective ways. I particularly love the CTA on the Services page. The Pricing page has exceptional color schemes with some valuable sections for establishing credibility (the trusted brands section is a nice touch). Plus, with the thoughful inclusion of text (not just dummy text), I would expect any agency would be able to use these layouts out of the box, with only minor adjustments. Download the layout pack here: https://www.elegantthemes.com/blog/divi-resources/download-a-free-web-agency-divi-layout-pack

But many people get stuck creating more complex layouts, when you want multiple rows of different numbers of columns but all in the same section. It’s really easy - you just have to know how. Get my blueprint cheat sheet here http://bit.ly/webblueprints. In this video I'll cover the main assets to a web page including page navigation, banners, sidebar design, footer, and body page specs. I'll include things like word count, keyword saturation, video placement, and outbound links as well as links to other videos on similar topics. Don't forget to share this video with your friends who are struggling with website design! For every subscriber, YouTube pays me a piece of chicken and a can of beans so PLEASE Subscribe to my channel: http://bit.ly/XkdbXS --------------------------- Video Notes: ************************1. Create templates************************ Now a, a big problem that I see with business owners and like clients that hire me and, and other Wordpress web designers is for every page, they're designing like, a new page. You know, it's like well, we need to add a new page to our website. It's like, oh great, I gotta design a whole nother page. Now it doesn't work that way, you need to be creating templates and a lot of website, website themes today support a template based system. So what we do is we create a series of templates that you can now export to the rest of your pages. But it's still important that those templates. ************************2. Top level Navigation************************ First of all, and of course, you know, like you're, you're always, this could be your social media links up here. This could be like your phone number, or an email button. You know, having those, always able to contact me, buttons, I think is a good idea. Up here you've got your navigation tabs. Now, when I first started in this, it was kind of like the thinking that you should have seven navigation tabs. I don't agree with that anymore. I think that you need to have like four or five, tops, and they need to be very simple. Every single one of them should be directed at converting a viewer to sale. So you don't need one of these navigation tabs to say home. Right? Cuz typically your logo will lead you home. You, you need it to say something like, About Us. What we offer. How to work with us. And our blog. Something like that. Wordpress web design tutorial Designing a top level web page template ************************3. Sidebar and Footer************************ I believe in side bars. Some people are doing like this whole page design, that's okay. That's fine. If that's the, the intent of your site. I like side bars because it enable me to, to engage with the viewer in different ways. Use related pages for your web design- It might be helpful to have YouTube. You know, YouTube marketing. Landing page videos. Video production. Video bumpers. You know? Maybe even a tag that says, what are you looking for? And then underneath that I have a little circle there. Which I typically use to represent a testimonial. So maybe you've got. A Wordpress testimonial widget right in there, where it's, every time it's refreshed, a new testimonial pops up, right. So you're engaging with the viewer that way. You might even have like social media links on, experimenting with an Instagram box. We'll see how that turns out. Let's go to your, I'll come up to the main page last, go to your footer. Your footer here is a huge resource. I like to have a three or four box footer that maybe has, like, you know, a summary about us, maybe our social links and then, maybe, like, a schedule, like schedule with me, or a work with me, right. And this could be an image. Maybe it looks like a contact box, but it's an image, and when you click it. It will go back to that work with us page, see. And then maybe in here you've got something you like your blog roll. Right? So your, your latest and greatest blogs. Or maybe it's like your most popular blogs which you know, you can, you can work that out with some plug ins. ************************4: Main Page************************ In your main page or top level design page, your main body, let's go back to that. Okay, we said about 400 words. But look at how I have it structured. I have an image up at the top and then I have some text right next to it. Now underneath that I have more text. Underneath that I have some bullet points. So basically what you have here is you've got, you know, everything you really need to convert that viewer. Right up here, right up there. And then you're gonna say something like let's dig into that a little bit more because you don't want them necessarily moving off of your page, right? --------------------------- For more information: WEB: http://thevideospot.net TW: http://www.twitter.com/owenhemsath FB: http://www.fb.com/yourvideospot
