Com275: Feature Writing "Magazine Articles Part 1"
The feature writing class is largely divided into two main units of newspaper/online news sites and magazines/ online magazine sites. The class featured in this video is part of the magazine unit and specifically a section about the magazine industry and how one can market themselves within it. The unit started with a macro view of the industry and this last class is now how one can tailor their own writing to fit certain genres of magazine writing that can then be pitched to the industry if one were a freelancer.

How to identify newspaper and magazine articles
Newspaper and magazine articles are usually written by journalists. These articles typically don't have in-text citations or reference lists. They are usually inappropriate to be used in university-level research papers, but there are exceptions to this rule. This video explains how to identify newspaper and magazine articles based on several criteria. To learn more about how to use the Library for research, check out the Library Research Skills Tutorial created by librarians at Concordia University Library: http://library.concordia.ca/learn/

Saturday Evening Post Production & Printing: "Magazine Magic" ~ 1945 Curtis Publishing

Includes Saturday Evening Post cover artist Norman Rockwell and cartoonist Ted Key. Originally a public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtis_Publishing_Company Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ The Curtis Publishing Company, founded in 1891 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, became one of the largest and most influential publishers in the United States during the early 20th century. The company's publications included the Ladies' Home Journal and The Saturday Evening Post, The American Home, Holiday, Jack & Jill, and Country Gentleman. In the 1940s, Curtis also had a comic book imprint, Novelty Press.... History The company was formed in 1891 by publisher Cyrus Curtis, who published the People's Ledger, a news magazine he had begun in Boston in 1872 and moved to Philadelphia in 1876. He had also established the Tribune and Farmer in 1879, from the women's section of which he fashioned the Ladies' Home Journal under the editorship of his wife, Louisa Knapp in 1883. These publications were taken under the imprimatur of the new company. In 1897, Curtis spent $1,000 to buy The Saturday Evening Post, which would become one of the nation's most popular periodicals, known for its timely articles and stories and frequent cover illustrations by Norman Rockwell. In 1946 Curtis Circulation Company is created as an official subsidiary of Curtis Publishing Company. The advent of television in the late 1940s and early 1950s encroached upon the popularity of general interest periodicals like the Post and the Journal, and in March, 1962, Curtis Publishing's president Robert A. MacNeal announced that the company had lost money for the first time since its incorporation, more than 70 years before. ...Curtis Publishing shut down the Evening Post in 1969. In March 1969, the Federal Trade Commission directs Curtis to offer cash refunds for unfulfilled portions of Evening Post subscriptions. Perfect Film purchased Curtis Circulation Company that same year. In 1976, The Saturday Evening Post Society was spun off from Curtis to publish its flagship magazine and U.S. Kids was formed which publishes their portfolio of childrens' magazines... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Saturday_Evening_Post The Saturday Evening Post is a bimonthly American magazine. It was published weekly under this title from 1897 until 1969, and quarterly and then bimonthly from 1971... While the publication traces its historical roots to Benjamin Franklin, The Pennsylvania Gazette was first published in 1728 by Samuel Keimer. The following year (1729), Franklin acquired the Gazette from Keimer for a small sum and turned it into the largest circulation newspaper in all the colonies. It continued publication until 1800. The Saturday Evening Post was founded in 1821 and grew to become the most widely circulated weekly magazine in America. The magazine gained prominent status under the leadership of its longtime editor George Horace Lorimer (1899--1937). The Saturday Evening Post published current event articles, editorials, human interest pieces, humor, illustrations, a letter column, poetry (with contributions submitted by readers), single-panel gag cartoons (including Hazel by Ted Key) and stories by the leading writers of the time. It was known for commissioning lavish illustrations and original works of fiction. Illustrations were featured on the cover and embedded in stories and advertising. Some Post illustrations became popular and continue to be reproduced as posters or prints, especially those by Norman Rockwell. Curtis Publishing Co. stopped publishing the Post in 1969 after the company lost a landmark defamation suit and was ordered to pay over $3 million in damages. The Post was revived in 1971 as a quarterly publication. As of the late 2000s, The Saturday Evening Post is published six times a year by the Saturday Evening Post Society, which purchased the magazine in 1982...

Screencast #77: Styling an Individual Article
The idea of "art directing" posts is very popular lately. It's the idea of applying unique styling to an article on the web in the way that print designers uniquely style articles for, say, a magazine. This is more than just a trend, it's just a good idea. In this screencast I show and example of doing this with WordPress and a specific plugin made for helping with this idea. Recorded Dec 16, 2009.

Print Books
Searching all of the library's resources has become a lot simpler in the past years, now that we have Scout. But maybe you've noticed it's a little trickier finding a print book. This video will help solve that problem for you! Hi. I am Elizabeth, and I am going to show you how to find a print book. By the end of this tutorial, you will be able to search Scout for a print books and locate all of the information needed to find it. The research tool SCOUT searches all of the libraries’ resources including scholarly articles, news and magazine articles, ebooks, and print books. The library has access to many online only resources, but it also houses millions of print books. When searching in SCOUT, you can use specific search filters called limiters to determine which resources are books. Let’s try a search for books about zombies and popular culture. Type the keywords into the advanced search boxes. On the left side of the results page, in the source types box, choose the check box for books. Choosing this option limits the results to books. However, this limiter also includes book reviews and ebooks. For example, let’s look at the fifth result, American Zombie Gothic. Check for the grey status box to ensure that the result is a book the library owns. The box lists all of the important information about finding the book. First check which library it is in, then check the status. “Available” means it is on the shelf. The last thing to note is the call number. It is a unique code needed to find the book. Here is the call number for American Zombie Gothic. When using call numbers, you’ll read from left to right. Use the first letter to determine the floor where the item is located. There are call number location guides beside the elevators on every floor. For example, call numbers starting with “p” are on the third floor. Locate the PN section by using the directional tabs at the end of each shelf range. From here find the section containing the 1995.9 books. The rest of the call number determines the location of the book on the shelf. Thanks for watching this video. If you have any questions, visit us at lib.ua.edu or at the Information Desk.

Wilbur Awards 2018: God Has Placed Paula in a Unique Place for Such a Time as This
IN the MAGAZINE ARTICLES print and online: National or Top 15 metro markets (single article, series of articles, religion page) category, the Wilbur Award goes to “‘God Has Placed Paula in a Unique Place for Such a Time as This’ How Pastor Paula White Became a Spiritual Force at the White House” Julia Duin, writer; Mary F. Calvert, photographer; The Washington Post Magazine, Washington, D.C. - - - - - Julia Duin is the Wilbur winner in the magazine category for a close up portrait of President Trump’s longtime spiritual advisor, Paula White. Characterized as a controversial, stiletto-wearing, televangelist, White granted Julia Duin unusual access. The article illuminated what White is doing at the White House, --why she supports Trump despite his flaws, --and what evangelicals are hoping to accomplish through Oval Office access. It also revealed intriguing personal details about White that included: -- a promiscuous teenage past, -- three marriages, -- a private jet, -- designer clothes, -- the bankruptcy of her 20,000 member church, -- and a three point five million dollar condo in Trump Tower. White plays a key role in connecting Trump with conservative Christian faith leaders, access which no other faith groups enjoy. Duin masterfully juxtaposes sources to create a balancing exchange around this controversial pastor and her critics without creating a judgmental tone. In two brief clips, White explains her role with Trump. Issue No. 42 Table of Contents: https://www.wingchunillustrated.com/issue-no-42-table-of-contents/ WE THINK OUR MAGAZINE IS FANTASTIC, BUT DON’T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT. CHECK OUT THESE READER TESTIMONIALS! "I have been practising Wing Chun for the best part of 30 years. In my time, I have read a huge amount of material on the art; however, I can honestly say that your magazine is by a long, long way the finest collection of articles I have come across. The fact that all views (and you and I both know there are so many) on the art of Wing Chun are made readily available in one place, without prejudice, is really inspirational and will hopefully serve as a guiding light and a template for dialogue within the art itself." —Chris Harvey "I have purchased Wing Chun Illustrated in printed format and I have to say that it is simply the highest quality magazine I have ever owned! Beyond the quality paper and printing techniques utilised, the articles themselves are thorough and true to the Wing Chun system. I really appreciate owning a piece of history and I look forward to future issues!" —James Bumpas "Wish all of the media could provide articles with as much concise and complete context. You have placed the bar back up to where it used to be and raised it even further. Much thanks to you and all the Sifus who contribute the knowledge to those of us on the path behind. Thanks!" —Rich Sherman For more reviews, go to https://www.wingchunillustrated.com/reader-testimonials/

David Carson - A Designer's Story
David Carson needs no introduction. Described by Creative Review magazine as "the most famous graphic designer on the planet," his first book, The End of Print, is the top selling graphic design book of all time. Although graduating with a degree in sociology and starting his career as a teacher, a design course one summer holiday encouraged him to become a graphic designer. Today his studio's work has been recognized the New York Type Directors Club, the American Center for Design and I.D. to name but a few. Carson and his work have been featured in over 180 magazine and newspaper articles around the world, including a feature in Newsweek magazine and a front page article in The New York Times. David's work continues to be subjective and largely driven by intuition, with an emphasis on experimenting with ways to communicate in a variety of mediums. Carson remains a hands-on designer, keeping his studio small and mobile. Watch exclusive video content on how graphic design made sense to him. Listen to him define graphic design and describe how different his first experience of desktop publishing was to the way technology has changed the way a designer approaches their work today. Would Carson even have started out in graphic design if he'd known the important role technology would play? And if you're just starting out in design, Carson describes what he thinks makes a good designer -- is having a good eye enough?
