Tutorial by Brendan Gregg of Netflix for O'Reilly Velocity conference 2015 Santa Clara. Part 1 of 2. Slides: http://www.slideshare.net/brendangregg/velocity-2015-linux-perf-tools or http://velocityconf.com/devops-web-performance-2015/public/schedule/detail/42513 Description: " There are many performance tools nowadays for Linux, but how do they all fit together, and when do we use them? This tutorial explains methodologies for using these tools, and provides a tour of four tool types: observability, benchmarking, tuning, and static tuning. Many tools will be discussed, including top, iostat, tcpdump, sar, perf_events, ftrace, SystemTap, sysdig, and others, as well observability frameworks in the Linux kernel: PMCs, tracepoints, kprobes, and uprobes. This tutorial is updated and extended on an earlier talk that summarizes the Linux performance tool landscape. The value of this tutorial is not just learning that these tools exist and what they do, but hearing when and how they are used by a performance engineer to solve real world problems — important context that is typically not included in the standard documentation."

SQLskills Insider video from April 21st, 2011 newsletter. Last week I blogged about using wait stats, latch stats, and spinlock stats as part of your performance tuning toolset so I thought I'd do a demo for you that shows using wait and latch stats. The demo investigates a poorly performing log file, takes action, and them compares the before and after wait stats to see the effect the action made. The short video (9 minutes) explains what is going on and also shows an interesting outstanding I/O limit that the log manager enforces. GCMV provides analysis and views of your applications verbose gc output. GCMV uses a powerful statistical analysis engine which provides tuning recommendations in these areas: - Memory Leak Detection Detect Java heap exhaustion and memory leaks Detect "native" (malloc) heap exhaustion and memory leaks - Optimizing garbage collection performance Analyze output from different gc modes (optthruput, optavgpause, gencon, balanced ) Compare output from multiple logs -- side by side Determine gc overhead, detect long or frequent gc cycles and causes Recommend settings to avoid long or frequent gc cycles Recommend optimum gc policy - Fine tuning of Java heap size Determine peak and average memory usage Recommend Java heap settings Flexible user interface makes it possible to carry out further analysis of the data and to "drill down" into the causes of trends and export of data into .csv or jpeg Oracle Java Mission Control (JMC) is free for development use only. JMC does provide data visualization, but it does not make tuning recommendations, nor does it compare various run results side by side. This is a major usability issue.

DNS logs can provide a wealth of information to an incident response investigation. Unfortunately, many organizations are not collecting DNS logs and do not have the operational capability to parse or analyze them. Additionally, Microsoft DNS logs, particularly those from Windows 2003–2008R2, are the ugly stepsisters of the log world. (Let’s not pretend there aren’t DNS servers out there still riding on those platforms!) So how do we efficiently parse these logs into a format we can easily analyze, as well as provide some basic analysis functions that any responder can use? Introducing DNSplice, a new tool to accurately parse Microsoft DNS logs for analysis in Excel (the OG of forensic analysis tools) or ingestion into other analysis platforms. Not only will DNSplice make sense of Microsoft DNS logs from Windows 2003 to 2016, but also allows you to apply your API key from various online threat engines to determine if a domain being requested is considered malicious. Additionally, DNSplice will provide base statistics including client IPs with most requests, domains by least and most frequency, and more! This talk is based on a graduate research paper written for the SANS Technology Institute’s Master of Science in Information Security Engineering Program. What tools should you be using on your website to market your business? Today Neil shares his six favorite digital marketing tools. ►►Subscribe here to learn more of my secret SEO tips: https://goo.gl/ScRTwc Find me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/neilkpatel/ Read more on my blog: https://neilpatel.com/blog 1:30 The first digital marketing tool that you guys should use is Google Analytics. It tracks your visitor count if you have a lot of traffic. They'll sample the data unless you pay like a hundred or a hundred and fifty grand or whatever their price is per year. Google Analytics will show you how people are engaging throughout your site and what traffic sources are causing most conversions. Don't optimize for traffic. Optimize for traffic that causes conversions. 3:00 The second digital marketing tool I have for you is Ubersuggest. You're going to want to get rankings. You're going to want more search traffic. It's the most consistent traffic that you'll get. Yes. Social media traffic is easier and quicker to get. But Google's algorithm updates aren't as crazy as Facebook's. It won't be where one day you're getting 300,000 visitors from Facebook organic reach and the next day you're getting 10,000 visitors. Google's organic traffic is very, very consistent. So use Ubersuggest. 3:40 The third digital marketing tool I have for you is Google Search Console. We love doing this internally, where we take Google search console, we log in; we look at all the posts, how many impressions they get, how many clicks they get and the click-through rate. We look for the posts that get less than a five percent click-through rate. We look at all the keywords that were getting impressions from that post, and then we integrate those keywords into that blog post or that landing page, and we rewrite that content. 7:30 The fourth digital marketing tool is Crazyegg. Crazyegg shows me how people are engaging with my website. How far they're scrolling. Where they're clicking. It allows me to take that data and, within Crazyegg, you don't have to be a developer, you don't have to be a designer. You can adjust your page and run A/B tests to maximize your sales. Because it's not just about getting traffic, it's about converting those visitors into conversions. Another tool that I love using is called Subscribers. It's through push notifications. People will come through to your website, but they don't come back. 8:00 The fifth digital marketing tool is called Subscribers. It's through push notifications. People will come through to your website, but they don't come back. What it does is it puts a little browser notification when people come to your site and gets them to subscribe without being obtrusive, it does it all within the browser. 9:00 The last digital marketing tool that I'm going to give you guys that you guys should check out is HubSpot. HubSpot's a great tool to look at your overall marketing, your lead count. It integrates marketing with sales, and that's why I want to end with HubSpot. I love it. I use it, and sure some people may say "Hey, there are other tools that do this or that." HubSpot has a lot of free plans, and they have some startup plans, which is very entrepreneur friendly, and best of all is they keep adding more and more stuff for free, so why not? They're a huge billion dollar company that are trying to crush their competitors, so they're just releasing a lot of stuff for free. Hey, that's for your benefit. 10:00 All this data and these digital marketing tools, with no action, is useless. You're better off saving the money and not even paying or using any of them. So that's it. Thank you for watching this week's Q&A Thursday video. If you want your questions answered, leave a comment below. Let us know you want it answered on a Q&A Thursday video. Maybe we'll select it. Either way, if you leave a comment below, I'll answer it no matter what. Please, like, share, review, whatever it is. This video, The more people that know about it, the more people I can help, the happier I'm going to be. As you can see, I don't promote my services or anything from my content. I'm just looking to help people. So I would appreciate it if you can share the content.

AXIS EventView, an innovative software tool designed to enable customers to reduce the complexity, time and cost of developing, testing and debugging sophisticated multi-processor, compute-intensive embedded applications while maximizing their performance. EventView, previously available as part of Abaco’s complete AXISPro software development environment, is now offered as a standalone tool for the company’s range of single board computers, signal processing boards and integrated systems. Recently applied in the development of a radar application, EventView allowed developers to rapidly identify the bottlenecks in a multi-threaded algorithm and helped them target the relevant 'pain-points' and inefficiencies in their code. This allowed performance of the algorithm to be improved by a factor of four in just two weeks. AXIS EventView is a performance analysis – or ‘event analyzer’ – tool that provides a ‘C’ API library that is used to instrument code by logging events, and a GUI viewer to analyze the subsequent event traces and determine application behavior. It provides the application developer with a much more detailed visual analysis of the application’s performance than other profiling tools on the market. EventView enables rapid identification of bottlenecks and non-deterministic behavior. Quick to learn and simple to use, it is highly portable and runs on all current platforms. Its API works across Linux®, Windows® and VxWorks® platforms, while the EventView GUI runs on Windows and Linux. Underlying hardware architectures that are supported include Intel®, ARM® and PowerPC™/Power Architecture™; mixed architecture systems are also supported. EventView is also an element within Abaco’s AXIS Advanced Multiprocessor Integrated Software integrated development tools, which is designed to simplify the process of creating DSP applications based on multiprocessor platforms. AXIS gives developers the tools they need to be more productive, and largely frees them from the complexities of the underlying hardware architecture.

AppTimer -- Application Startup Timer I found this helpful utility at http://www.passmark.com/products/apptimer.htm through my internet travels. AppTimer is a (from their website) "AppTimer will run an executable a number of times and time how long it takes for the application to reach a state ... before exiting the application. After each run of the application AppTimer will attempt to close the application in an automated fashion while logging the startup time measurements to a log file." The key point to understand from this software is that AppTimer can measure time how long it takes for your application to reach the state where the user input is being accepted before exiting the application. For example if you use this to launch word and open a document, Word's application launch may be recorded, as well as opening the document. The first plus that caught my eye was that this is a portable app, no installation required. I'm always looking for another utility for my troubleshooting USB drive. I will run a test to see how I can use it in the field. You should play with this utility on your computer to get the hang of it before going across a network. Enjoy
