79. The Difference Between Over the Counter (OTC) and Exchange-Based Markets

05:15
Practice trading with a free demo account: http://bit.ly/IT-forex-demo3 View full article: http://www.informedtrades.com/20797-difference-between-exchange-traded-over-counter-markets.html When trading stocks or futures you normally do so via a centralized exchange such as the New York Stock Exchange or the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. In addition to providing a centralized place where all trades are conducted, exchanges such as these also play the key role of acting as the counterparty to all trades. What this means is that while you may be buying for example 100 shares of Google stock at the same time someone else is selling those shares, you do not buy those shares directly from the seller but instead from the exchange. The fact that the exchange stands on the other side of all trades in exchange traded markets is one of their key advantages as this removes counterparty risk, or the chance that the person who you are trading with will default on their obligations relating to the trade. A second key advantage of exchange traded markets is that as all trades flow through one central place, the price that is quoted for a particular instrument is always the same regardless of the size or sophistication of the person or entity making the trade. This in theory should create a more level playing field which can be an advantage to the smaller and less sophisticated trader. Lastly, because all firms that offer exchange traded products must be members and register with the exchange, there is greater regulatory oversight which can make exchange traded markets a much safer place for individuals to trade. The downside that is often cited about exchange traded markets is cost. As the firms who offer exchange traded products must meet high regulatory requirements to do so, this makes it more costly for them to offer these products, a cost that is inevitably passed along to the end user. Secondly, as all trades in exchange traded products must flow through the exchange this gives these for profit entities immense power when setting things such as exchange fees which can also increase transaction costs for the end user. Unlike the stock market and the futures market which trade on centralized exchanges, the spot forex market and many debt markets trade in what's known as the over the counter market. What this means is that there is no centralized place where trades are made, instead the market is made up of all the participants in the market trading among themselves. The biggest advantage to over the counter markets is that because there is no centralized exchange and little regulation, you have heavy competition between different providers to attract the most traders and trading volume to their firm. This being the case transaction costs are normally lower in over the counter markets when compared to similar products that trade on an exchange. As there is no centralized exchange the firms that make prices in the instrument that is trading over the counter can make whatever price they want, and the quality of execution varies from firm to firm for the same instrument. While this is less of a problem in liquid markets such as FX where there are multiple price reference sources, it can be a problem in less highly traded instruments. While the lack of regulation can be seen as an advantage in the above sense it can also be seen as a disadvantage, as the low barriers to entry and lack of heavy oversight also make it easier for firms offering trading to operate in a dishonest or fraudulent way. Lastly, as there is no centralized exchange the firm that you trade with when you trade in an over the counter market like forex is the counterparty to your trade, so if something happens to that firm you are in danger of loosing not only the trades you have with that firm but also your account balance. It is for these reasons that there is so much focus among forex traders as to which firm to trade with, with special attention being paid to the financial stability of the firm and the execution that they provide. As we proceed through this forex trading course we will continue to gain a better understanding of the structure of the market and traders should be well prepared after going through those lessons to make an informed decision for themselves on this issue.

The relationship between the Current Account Balance and Exchange Rates

16:16
This lesson will illustrate how trade flows should lead to appreciation and depreciation of currencies in a floating exchange rate system, and then explain how in the case of China, central bank policy aimed at buying large quantities of US government debt keeps the supply of Chinese currency high in the US and the demand for US dollars high in China. This means the dollar remains stronger than it otherwise might relative to the Chinese RMB, contributing to the persistent trade deficits the US exhibits in its trade with China. How the New York Stock Exchange Works

05:03
In our top story Nicole takes us on a tour of the New York Stock Exchange. The NYSE was founded in 1792 and today billions of dollars exchange hands there everyday. More than 2,000 companies trade their stock there. Owning stock is like owning a stake in a company, if the company does well you can make money, if it does badly you can lose money. How trading on the New York Stock Exchange actually works

24:32
Peter Tuchman explains and demonstrates how trading works on the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange). He also has some valuable suggestions for would be traders. Rick Green while interviewed by Wayne McCarthy was lying through his teeth explaining that his brother in law (or one of his traders), by the name of Louie Asiaee, uses paper to trade on the NYSE and not electronically and that is the reason he offers to explain why he can't show evidence of the trading that he supposedly do for investors. Rick Green openly confessed on video that he stole money from me and that he has no shame. Property Plant And Equipment Nonmonetary Exchange (Gain On Trade In Of Equipment)

07:46
Accounting for exchanges of nonmonetary assets (long term assets, fixed assets as property, plant and equipment), example is where a company trades in an old machine for a new machine and pays the balance due on the exchange with cash recognizing a gain on the exchange with comercial substance and without commercial substance, calculates the book value of the old machine traded, gain on disposal, cost of new machine and records the journal entries for the exchange, the cash paid on the exchange is greater than the fair value of the machine acquired, therefore the gain is not deferred and recognize the entire gain, basic rules using a decision table for summary for accounting requirements for recognizing gains and losses on exchanges of nonmonetary assets, example would be for Corp-A trading in old machine for a new machine or where Corp-A and Corp-B exchange machines, may require cash given or cash received, Exchange of Nonmonetary Assets (Gain/Loss Recognition): (1) Compute total Gain or Loss asset given up: (Fair value - book value) = Gain or Loss, (2) If Loss (recognize entire Loss), or(3) If Gain: (a) Yes commercial substance (recognize entire Gain), (b) No commercial substance: (1) No cash involved (No Gain recognized), (2) Some cash given (No Gain recognized), (3) Some cash received (Portion of Gain recognized): (cash receivded boot/cash received + other assets received) x gain = portion of gain recognized, if cash exchanged greater than 25 percent fair value of exchange recognize entire gain, details by Allen Mursau

The Columbian Exchange: Crash Course World History #23

12:09
In which John Green teaches you about the changes wrought by contact between the Old World and the New. John does this by exploring the totally awesome history book "The Columbian Exchange" by Alfred Cosby, Jr. After Columbus "discovered" the Americas, European conquerors, traders, and settlers brought all manner of changes to the formerly isolated continents. Disease and invasive plant and animal species remade the New World, usually in negative ways. While native people, plants, and animals were being displaced in the Americas, the rest of the world was benefitting from American imports, especially foods like maize, tomatoes, potatoes, pineapple, blueberries, sweet potatoes, and manioc. Was the Columbian Exchange a net positive? It's debatable. So debate. Exchange Rates, Interest Rates and the Global Carry Trade

01:29:35
Webinar Session with Martin Evans, Professor of Economics at Georgetown University. Abstract We examine how the global carry trade affects the dynamics of spot exchange rates and interest rates across 13 countries between 2000 and 2011. Our model identifies the weekly carry trade position in each currency by matching data on forex trading flows with the predictions of a dynamic portfolio allocation problem that exploits the predictability in excess currency returns (deviations from uncovered interest parity). We then use this position data to examine the global carry trade and its affects from 2001, through the world financial crisis, until the end of 2011.

Global Currenciez: What Is Forex? - Foreign Exchange, Currency Trading Market

03:58
https://globalcurrenciez.com Forex is the global decentralized market for trading currencies. This includes buying, selling and exchanging currencies at current, determined or future prices. Forex is by far the largest market in the world. As of 2016, Forex produces a daily trading volume of over $5.4 trillion. The main participants of the global forex market are larger financial institutions, mostly banks. Financial centers around the world operate as anchors of trading between a wide range of multiple types of buyers and sellers. Forex is short for foreign exchange. The foreign exchange market does not determine the relative value of different currencies, but sets the current market prices of the value of one currency as demanded against another.nThe foreign exchange market is commonly referred to as forex (pronounced "[ˈfôreks]"), FX, or currency market. The global currency market works through financial institutions, and it operates on several levels. Behind the scenes banks turn to a smaller number of financial firms known as “dealers,” who are actively involved in large quantities of foreign exchange trading. Most forex dealers are banks, so this market is called the “interbank market”. Trades between forex dealers can be very large, involving hundreds of millions or billions of dollars. The forex market assists international trade and investments by enabling currency conversion. For example, it permits a business in the United States to import goods from European Union member states, and pay Euros, even though its income is in United States dollars. It also supports direct speculation and evaluation relative to the value of currencies, and the carry trade, speculation based on the interest rate differential between two currencies. The global forex market is so unique because of its huge trading volume representing the largest asset class in the world leading to high liquidity; the variety of factors that affect exchange rates; the low margins of relative profit compared with other markets of fixed income; and the use of leverage to enhance profit and loss margins and with respect to account size. As such, it has been referred to as the market closest to the ideal of perfect competition, notwithstanding currency intervention by central banks. Forex Market Size and Forex Liquidity Forex is traded in an over-the-counter market where brokers/dealers negotiate directly with one another, so there is no central exchange or clearing house. The foreign exchange market is the most liquid financial market in the world. Traders include governments and central banks, commercial banks, other institutional investors and financial institutions, currency speculators, other commercial corporations, and individuals. Unlike a stock market, the foreign exchange market is divided into levels of access. At the top is the interbank market, which is made up of the largest commercial banks and securities dealers. Top 10 currency traders (May 2016) 1. Citi 2. JP Morgan 3. UBS 4. Deutsche Bank 5. Bank of America Merrill Lynch 6. Barclays 7. Goldman Sachs 8. HSBC 9. XTX Markets 10. Morgan Stanley The average daily turnover in the global currency exchange and related markets is growing. Forex trading increased by 20% in less than 3 years, and has more than doubled since 2004. This increase is due to a number of factors: the growing importance of forex as an asset class, the increased trading activity of high-frequency traders, and the emergence of retail investors as an important market segment. Electronic trading via online portals has made it easier for retail forex traders to trade in the currency trading market. Intl Economics - Chapter 14: Exchange Rate Adjustments and the Balance-of-Payments

53:24
We have explored how a nation’s Trade Balance enters a period of disequilibrium with corrections automatically instigated in the form of changes to domestic prices, interest rates, and destabilized income and employment levels. Some of the system’s auto-adjustments include economic recession, inflation, loss of jobs, and devalued income in the domestic economy. It works, but it also causes pain. There might be other ways to accomplish the stabilization goal, which may be less distressing. This chapter begins with a look at exchange-rate adjustments and the Balance of Payments. We will cover currency depreciation, or devaluation, affecting a nation’s trade position through its impact on relative prices, incomes, and purchasing power of monetary balances.

Bgogo Exchange Interview w/ Max Wang - A New Model of Trading Mining + Game Theory

33:14
Join the Coin Crunch Community - https://coincrunch.io/join Sia and Dan interview Bgogo co-founder Max Wong. Bgogo is a second generation crypto exchanging using trade mining. --- If you enjoy this kind of in depth, tech-focused conversation, check out our research product, Crypto Intel: https://coincrunch.io/intel --- In it, we condense hundreds of hours of hands on research, conversations with VCs, and notes from in person meetings around the world. ----- Questions asked during this interview: 1. How is BGOGO’s business model sustainable? 2. How does BGOGO prevent margin bot traders from gaming the system? 3. How does BGOGO punish bad supernode actors? 4. What are the incentives of holding BGOGO tokens if you aren’t an active day to day user of the platform? 5. If the daily trans mining limit is capped per user, what is the incentive for an extremely active user to continue trading after they hit the cap? In this case, wouldn’t the cap be counter intuitive. 6. Is there a check and balance to the decisions made by the BGOGO team regarding listing? If several supernodes nominate a specific project to be listed, and the BGOGO team declines, how transparent will this process and reasoning be? 7. If BGOGO is an exchange for the community, how is the community involved in deciding project listing? The current supernode system seems more of an oligarchy which isn’t necessarily for the community, instead for the few. 8. What are the direct benefits of being incubated by BGOGO labs, are any related to the exchange? 9. How does your buyback program differ from BNB? 10. What are the super nodes? 11. What are the negative trading fees? ------ Join Coin Crunch: https://coincrunch.io/join Join us on Telegram: https://t.me/coincrunch Follow us out on Twitter: https://twitter.com/coincrunchio Check us out on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/user/coincrunchio Read our Articles on Medium: https://medium.com/@coincrunchio Join the Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/coincrunch/
