Ubuntu: How do I correctly mount a NTFS partition in /etc/fstab?
Ubuntu: How do I correctly mount a NTFS partition in /etc/fstab? The Question: After a nasty episode (my second, you'd think I'd learn) caused by unsupervised automated podcast downloads filling my entire partition, I've finally moved just ~/Music to its own partition. The partition I'm using was already formatted NTFS (this is the genius part: when I got this computer three years ago, I actually set it up with a 20G music partition precisely because I'd had this problem before, but I never actually organized myself to store music on it. So that's my backstory. Here's what I need now: I have two partitions that I want to start mounting on startup: /dev/sda3 /mnt/devel ext4 defaults 0 2 /dev/sda2 /mnt/excess ntfs defaults 0 2 The ext4 partion mounts fine (owned by me, writeable only by me), but the ntfs mounts owned by root with read and write permission for all. I'm not sure how to fix this. Is there something quirky about ntfs or did I do something elsewhere that's causing this problem? drwxr-xr-x 7 amanda amanda 4096 2012-03-14 19:07 devel drwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4096 2012-03-14 22:38 excess Solutions Sample (Please watch the whole video to see all solutions, in order of how many people found them helpful): == This solution helped 4 people == Might not be a good solution , but you can always map user id to your own one , or the group id: Just an example here , my user id was 1000 /dev/sda5 /mnt/excess ntfs defaults,uid=1000,rw 0 0 In that case , all files mounted owned by user ided 1000 == This solution helped 79 people == Permissions for ntfs and vfat file systems must be set with the dmask, fmask and umask options. dmask controls permissions for directories, fmask controls permissions for files, and umask controls both. Since these options set masks, they should be the complement of the permissions you want. For example, rwx for the owner and rx for others is 022 rather than 755. To set the owner, use the uid and gid options for user and group, respectively. You can find your UID with the command id -u. To find your GID, use id -g. These values are both usually 1000. A common set of mount options for ntfs is uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=027,fmask=137. This sets you as the owner of the drive, and sets the permissions to drwxr-x---. Here are two lines from my /etc/fstab working UUID=EEA2B69CA2B668AB /WIN_C ntfs-3g defaults,nls=utf8,umask=000,dmask=027,fmask=137,uid=1000,gid=1000,windows_names 0 0 UUID=65AEC0E830EA0497 /WIN_D ntfs-3g rw 0 0 If you get no visible error after rebooting and partitions stay readonly or you get an error similar to: Error mounting /dev/sda6 at /media/WindowsDrive: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" - o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/ sda6" "/media/rolindroy/Media Center"' exited with non-zero exit status 14: The disk contains an unclean file system (0, 0). Metadata kept in Windows cache, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sda6': Operation not permitted The NTFS partition is in an unsafe state. Please resume and shutdown Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting), or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option This is because Windows 8 and 10 offer a "Fast Startup" option that depends on a "non-complete" shutdown. You can disable fast startup by following these https://itsfoss.com/solve-ntfs-mount-problem-ubuntu-windows-8-dual-boot/ under "Power Options". With thanks & praise to God! NFS Sharing Demonstration
This video will look at how to use the NFS server and client features in Windows as well as a quick look at Ubuntu. There is a lot to NFS and this video just covers the basics. Check out http://YouTube.com/ITFreeTraining or http://itfreetraining.com for more of our always free training videos. Demonstration 0:25 – We will now take a look at my computer running Windows Server 2012 R2. 0:32 – First we will open Server Manager from the quick launch bar. 0:37 – Select “Add roles and features” to start the Add roles and features wizard. 0:43 – As we will be installing this on a local server, we will leave the first two screens as their defaults and click next. 0:49 – On the Server Selection screen, we will select the local server ‘NYDC1’ from the list and click next. 0:56 – On the Server Roles screen, we will select the NFS Server role. (We will discuss the client component later on in the video.) Expand ‘File and Storage Services’ and then expand the sub-category ‘File and iSCSI services’ then select the Server for NFS component. PLEASE NOTE: Windows may prompt you to install additional features. If this is the case, select’ Add Features’ when prompted. 1:35 – Click next. 1:37 – The next screen will ask if you would like to install additional features. In our case today, we do not need any additional features so we will just press next. 1:45 – With the required roles selected (and additional features added if necessary), we will be on the last screen of the wizard. We will press install at this point to initiate the install of the selected roles and features. The installation will take a few moments to complete so we’ll pause the video and return when it’s done. 1:59 – Once the install is complete, we will close the wizard and then open up Windows Explorer. 2:07 – We’ll select the D Drive and create a new folder called ‘Data’. This will be the folder we share using NFS. 2:12 – Next, we will create a text document called “Data folder on NYDC1.txt” so when we connect to it later in the video using the client, I can identify it. 2:28 – With the folder now created, the next step is to share it. To do this, we will right click on the folder and select properties. 2:37 – To share the folder using NFS, select the NFS Sharing tab. 2:43 – On the NFS Sharing tab, press the button “Manage NFS Sharing” to bring up the NFS sharing dialog. 2:49 – To share the folder, tick the option at the top “Share this folder”. 2:55 – With the folder shared, there are some additional options that can be configured, but that is beyond the scope of this video. 3:04 – If you notice at the top, there are options for Kerberos if you want to utilize Kerberos for security. 3:11 – In our case, I will select the option “Allow anonymous access”. This will allow the NFS share to be accessed without a username and password. 3:20 – Next we will determine which computers we will enable to access the share. To do this, we will press the permissions button. 3:31 – We see by default that all machines have the “allow read-only access” to the share. 3:35 – To add additional permissions, we’ll select the Add button. 3:38 - In this case, I will add the computer NYDC1, which is the server. 3:43 – Later in the video, we’ll be trying to connect to the share from the NYDC1 server and we want to ensure that it has access when we do. 3:49 – Notice, for the type of access, I can select read-only or read-write. We’ll leave it on Read/Write and then press OK to exit the dialog. 4:00 – Notice that if the permission “all machines” is selected, the remove button is unavailable and greyed out. This permission cannot be removed, so if you wanted to remove permissions, you will need to change the access to “No Access”. Since we have added NYDC1 into the permissions list, this essentially limits access to ONLY NYDC1. 4:21 – With the share created, and permissions set, we will close the open windows and go back to the Server manager. 4:25 – This step is to connect the new NFS share to Windows. To do this, however, an additional feature is required. Keep in mind that Windows Server and Windows OS versions earlier than 8.1 support this feature, however Windows 8.1 does not have this support built in. If you are using 8.1, you will need additional software to access an NFS share. Arlo Pro 2 Review - Wireless Camera - Unboxing, Setup, Settings, Installation, Footage
I bit the bullet and purchased the Arlo Pro 2. I got the 2 camera kit which comes with a base station. I paid $455 dollars for it which boils down to $227.50 dollars per camera. This is not cheap and I have high expectations for these cameras and I expect them to deliver. Watch the video to learn another reason why we need security camera ;) Arlo Pro 2 Camera System - https://amzn.to/2JaSsW6 Let's get to the features: First off, this camera needs a base station which will be inside the house near your router and it needs to be connected to your router using the included ethernet cable. For the cameras, they are 1080p HD It has 130 degree FOV Night Vision with 850 NM LEDS that can reach up to 25 feet It has an 8 x digital zoom 2 way audio It can only connect to a 2.4 GHz WiFi and the base station to the cameras needs to be within 300 feet line of sight. The motion detection if it is in battery power uses PIR motion technology but when it is plugged in it uses video based doftware and has a 3 second preview meaning it will record 3 seconds before motion has been detected As to alerts - you can get push notifications on your phone and/or email. The cameras are weather resistant with a IP65 rating and has an operating temperature of -4 degrees to 113 degrees fahrenheit Also, it works with Amazon Alexa, Smart things and IFTTT. As to recordings, it defaults to recording to the cloud and has a free basic subscription which stores your motion detected footage for 7 days. It has other paid subscription plans ...the premier which stores footage for 30 days for 100 bucks annually and an elite plan that can store your footage for 60 days for 150 dollars per year. How to Restore and Customize Ubuntu GRUB Bootloader
GRUB bootloader gets overrided if you install Windows after Ubuntu. I make this video tutorial on how to restore and customize the GRUB loader. Common Problem: You install Windows after you install Ubuntu. That erases the GRUB loader, and instead of being able to switch between Ubuntu and Windows, Windows will boot automatically. Steps: 1) Create a bootable USB Flash Drive of Ubuntu. - Download Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop - Download and install Universal USB Installer http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ - Create bootable USB flash drive of Ubuntu 2) Restart computer and boot into Ubuntu. 3) Use try Ubuntu and install boot-repair. Commands: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install boot-repair y boot-repair 4) Recommended repair. 5) Afterwards, if you restart, you can see the GRUB Bootloader again. You can select between Ubuntu and Windows. 6) Use Ubuntu Next parts will be customizing Ubuntu GRUB Bootloader: 8) Open a terminal: sudo fdisk -l 9) Keep track of what sda number is Windows partition on. 10) Customize GRUB bootloader cd /boot/grub sudo gedit grub.cfg 11) Delete any duplicate entries that do not match sda number correctly, and delete any extra entries that you may never use. Virtual Hard Disk Demonstration
This video will look at how to create virtual hard disks on Windows Server 2012 R2 using the VHD and VHDX format. The video will also look at how to convert between the different formats. The principles used in this video also apply to client operating system. Access the rest of the course http://ITFreeTraining.com/server Download the PDF: http://ITFreeTraining.com/handouts/server/virtualhddemo.pdf Demonstration creating virtual disks in Disk Management 1) To create and manage virtual disks this can be done with “Disk Management”. “Disk Management” can be opened by right clicking on the start menu and selecting the option “Disk Management”. 2) To create a new VHD, open the action menu and then select the option “Create VHD”. 3) To create a new virtual hard disk, enter in the location you want to create the virtual hard disk at the top of the screen. 4) Under the location select the size of the virtual hard disk that you want to create. If you create a virtual hard disk using the VHD format then the largest virtual hard disk you can create is 2040 Gigabytes. If you use the VHDX format you can create a virtual hard disk that is up to 64 Terabytes in size. The VHDX format is only supported on Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 and above. The VHDX format offers additional performance features as well as transaction logging. 5) In the middle of the screen select the format you want to use to create the virtual machine. Either VHD or VHDX. 6) At the bottom you can choose if the virtual hard disk is fixed in size or dynamically expanding. The size of the dynamically expanding virtual disk will be same as the amount of data stored on the virtual disk. The fixed option creates a file the same size as the virtual disk. This makes performance of the virtual disk faster, however it does mean that more disk space will be used. 7) Once a virtual disk is created it will automatically be mounted and thus will appear in disk management. The icon used in disk management will be blue to indicate that it is a virtual disk. The icon used for physical hard disks will be grey. If the computer is restarted the virtual hard disk will need to be mounted again. If you want the virtual disk to be automatically mounted during start up, a script will need to created and run at start up to mount the virtual disk. 8) Like a newly installed physical hard disk with data on it, the virtual hard disk will need to be initialized before it can be used. To do this, right click on the virtual hard disk and select the option “Initialize Disk”. In this case MBR will be used, however you could use GPT as well if the hardware that you were planning to use the virtual disk on supported GPT. 9) Once the disk has been initialized it will be able to be formatted. To do this, right click on the virtual disk and select the option “New Simple Volume”. You are free to choose your own options, however in this case all the defaults were used. This will create a drive using all the free space and format it with NTFS. Demonstration creating virtual disks using PowerShell 1) To open PowerShell, press the PowerShell icon in the quick launch bar. 2) If you run the command convert-vhd in PowerShell you will get an error message saying the Hyper-V role needs to be installed. To install Hyper-V, assuming the server meets the requirements, open Server Manager and select the option on the welcome screen “Add roles and features” and then from the wizard accept all the defaults except for ticking the role “Hyper-V” on the “Select server roles” screen. Part of the install will install the module “Hyper-V Module for Windows PowerShell” which is what you need to run the PowerShell commands. Unfortunately the whole Hyper-V role needs to be installed in order for the PowerShell commands to work. If you are not able to install Hyper-V on the server, it is also possible to run these PowerShell commands on Windows clients like Windows 8 assuming the Hyper-V role is installed on those clients. The server or client will need to be restarted after the install. 3) To convert a VHD file from one format to another use the PowerShell command Convert-VHD –Path (Source) –DestinationPath (Dest). e.g. Convert-VHD –Path c:\DataDrive.vhd –DestinationPath c:\DataDrive.vhdx Description too long for YouTube. How to Install Debian Linux 9.8.0 on Vmware Workstation
How to Install Debian Linux 9.8.0 on Vmware Workstation Installing Debian GNU/Linux to a Virtual Machine It is not necessary to burn an install CD for Debian. VMware can mount an iso image as a virtual CD ROM drive. The disk image used here is: Debian GNU/Linux testing "Etch" - Official Snapshot i386 Binary-1 CD. The netinst iso image (debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso) was downloaded from the Debian site (http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/). In the console tab for the virtual machine, double click on the icon for the CD-ROM drive. Select the virtual CD-ROM In the "CD-ROM device" dialog, Click on the radio button for "Use ISO image" and click the "Browse" button. Navigate to the iso image for the install disk and "Open" it. Then click "OK". Select ISO image for CD device Start the virtual machine by clicking on "Start this virtual machine" while its tab is being viewed in the console (or click the green triangle in the toolbar or select "Power On" from the "Power" menu or hit Ctrl+B). The VMware virtual bios will display. VMware Bios At the Debian install boot screen, click anywhere within the window, so that mouse and keyboard input will be sent to the virtual machine. To release the mouse and keyboard from the virtual machine, press and release Ctrl+Alt. While the keyboard and mouse are captured by the virtual machine, pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del sends Ctrl+Alt+Del to both the host and the virtual machine. To send Ctrl+Alt+Del to the virtual machine only use Ctrl+Alt+Insert. Once input is captured by the virtual machine, type "installgui" and hit Enter. Debian Install Boot Screen At the "Choose language" screen, ensure "English" is selected and click "Continue". Choose Language At the "Choose a country, territory or area" screen, select "Canada" and click "Continue". Choose Country At the "Select a keyboard layout" screen, ensure "American English" is selected and click "Continue". Select Keyboard Layout The installation program will now mount the CD and load installer components and autodetect and configure network settings (assuming NAT was selected when the machine was created). If bridge networking is selected, the installer will not find the DHCP host and will ask for the network details (IP address, netmask, router address, and DNS server address). Then you will be asked for the hostname Enter Hostname and domain for the virtual machine. Enter domain name The installer will then detect disks and offer options to "Partition disks". The default of "Erase entire disk" is fine. This applies only to the virtual disk, not to any actual disk on the host machine. Partition Disks Accept the default "Partitioning scheme" placing "All files in one partition". Choose Partitioning Scheme When asked, "write the changes to disk". Note that a swap partition is also created automatically. Write the Partitions to Disk Confirm that it is OK to "Write the changes to disk". Confirm Partition Changes "Configure time zone" to "Eastern". Select Time Zone Begin setting up users and passwords by entering and verifying a root password. Set Root Password Enter the full name of an initial user. Enter User's Full Name Enter the username for the initial user. Enter Username Enter and verify a password for the initial user. Enter User Password The installer will now install the base system. Packages will be loaded from the CD, unpacked, and configured. You will then be asked to configure the package manager. Leave "Use a network mirror" checked and click "Continue". Configure Package Manager For the "Debian archive mirror country" select "United States". My experience with Canadian mirrors is that they are usually not full mirrors and lag noticeably behind the main US site in reflecting changes. Leave the proxy information blank for the package manager. Do not set Proxy info Leave the box unchecked for "Participate in the package usage survey?". Decline Usage Survey When asked to select software, ensure that the defaults of "Desktop environment" and "Standard system" are checked. . . Install Grub to Master Boot Record The installation will now finish. Click "Continue". Finish Installation To be aware of our new videos please subscribe our channel. Ubuntu: Is it worth to tune Ext4 with noatime?
Ubuntu: Is it worth to tune Ext4 with noatime? The Question: With previous versions of Ubuntu (using Ext3 filesystem) I used to tune it for better performance with noticeable results by setting the noatime parameter in /etc/fstab. Is it still worth it to do that with the Ext4 filesystem, which is now default in Ubuntu? If so, does the procedure changed in some way? An example of this tuning can be found http://blog.loxal.net/2008/01/tuning- ext3-for-performance-without.html Solutions Sample (Please watch the whole video to see all solutions, in order of how many people found them helpful): == This solution helped 62 people == On Ubuntu 10.04, relatime is part of the default mount options, unless overridden in /etc/fstab. The previous few releases had relatime explicitly in /etc/fstab. relatime gives the same speed (and flash write cycle conservation) benefits as noatime, without causing trouble to old-fashioned mail notifiers. The article you cite recommends data=writeback. Ubuntu defaults to data=ordered. Ubuntu's setting is slower in case of heavy disk load, but carries significantly less risk of data loss in case of a crash or power failure. So I would not recommend changing from the Ubuntu default. Changing commit=5 to commit=100 increases the time window during which data will be lost in case of a crash, for little benefit in most circumstances. Summary: leave the settings as they are, they were chosen for a reason. ---- ADDED: There are other things beyond mount options than can make a difference. Switching from ext3 to ext4 is itself often a visible improvement. Here are a few more tips for laptop users. * If you have a slow SSD, check out https://superuser.com/questions/173283/ which-linux-distro-to-run-on-a-slow-ssd. The important tips are to use tmpfs for /tmp and for the browser cache (and perhaps history). * If you have a hard disk and you want it to stop spinning for extended lengths of time, then install http://sourceforge.net/projects/noflushd/, which allows the disk to spin down by delaying all writes until the RAM is full. (Of course, reads can cause the disk to spin up; you'll want to get into the habit of running cat /files/I/m/likely/to/need >/dev/null before the disk spins down.) In order for noflushd to be effective, turn off all swap and mount your filesystems with something like commit=3600. Using noflushd effectively means that your data can remain unwritten to disk for an extended length of time. This is a risk, to be weighed against the benefit of not having any noise or heat coming from the disk for a while. Don't use noflushd if you're not comfortable with that risk.
