Skeptical Journal Club: How To Read A Medical Study

01:23:18
For best viewing experience, please download the following .pdf files of the studies discussed in Dr. Cmar's talk: http://files.ncas.org/2014-12-02/NCAS-mefloquine-HIV-plos-2014.pdf http://files.ncas.org/2014-12-02/NCAS-homeopathy-PMS-2014.pdf One of the most important aspects of being a healthy skeptic is knowing that just because a scientific study was done on a topic does not mean the study was done well, or that the conclusion the authors reach is supported by what they actually did. But when someone states that a particular study has major flaws or was well-done, what precisely does that mean? In this video, Dr. John Cmar analyzes two different journal articles in detail, focusing on the good, the bad, and the ugly of how studies are done and interpreted. John Cmar, MD, has been long enthralled with horrible infections that could spell doom for humankind, as well as sanity and skepticism in the practice of medicine. He is currently an Instructor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and the Assistant Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. He is the lead physician in Sinai's Ryan White initiative, which provides medical care and social assistance to patients with HIV infection who are without medical insurance. In his role as Program Director for the Internal Medicine residency program at Sinai, he teaches an annual course series in Evidence-Based Medicine, among many other duties. He also does Infectious Diseases outreach in Baltimore television and print media, and is the guest-in-residence on the monthly Midday on Health show with Dan Rodricks on 88.1 WYPR radio in Baltimore. John is a science fiction and fantasy fan, avid gamer, and podcast enthusiast. He currently blogs and podcasts on skeptical, medical, and geeky topics as Saint Nickanuck of the Tundra at johncmar.com

Your Body Is Acidic. Here’s What You NEED To Do. The Real Truth Behind Cancer !

05:05
Your Body Is Acidic. Here’s What You NEED To Do. The Real Truth Behind Cancer. Have you Ever heard of Dr. Otto H. Warburg? Unless you or your family member has suffered from cancer and tried to cure it naturally, his name and research probably won’t ring a bell. Dr. Warburg is a Nobel prize winner best known for his work on the process of oxidation and the metabolism of tumors. According to the Nobel Prize Committee, “he has shown, among other things, that cancerous cells can live and develop, even in the absence of oxygen”. As you know, oxygen is essential for all life to thrive and survive. The fact that cancerous cells can thrive without it is perplexing, so here’s a little breakdown on how it works. Dr. Warburg discovered that “tumor cells obtain the energy required for their existence in two ways: by respiration [a process that requires oxygen] and by fermentation [an anaerobic process]. In respiration they burn organic materials to carbon dioxide and water; in fermentation they split glucose to lactic acid. Both carbon dioxide and lactic acid are acidic, meaning that cancer cells essentially thrive in an acidic environment. When tumors occur in oxygen-deprived environments, a protein called CHCHD4 triggers the release of HIF (hypoxia-inducible factor), a dimeric protein complex that encourages blood vessel formation around the tumor as well as tumor migration. This allows the tumor to continue to grow and spread throughout the body. Aggressive diseases like pancreatic cancers and gliomas (a form of brain tumor) contain higher levels of CHCHD4 than other cancers. “Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar. All normal body cells meet their energy needs by respiration of oxygen, whereas cancer cells meet their energy needs in great part by fermentation. All normal body cells are thus obligate aerobes, whereas all cancer cells are partial anaerobes.” Explained the Nobel Laureate. Dr. Waburg also noted that all the tumors he studied behaved the same, meaning that there is, in fact, a cure-all way to fighting cancer. “In order to kill tumor cells through want of energy it is necessary to stop respiration as well as fermentation.” He noted that all tumors studied at the time behaved the same. Since tumor cells have two ways of obtaining energy, starving them of glucose isn’t the best way to win the fight. Dr. Waburg suggested that “In order to kill tumor cells through want of energy it is necessary to stop respiration as well as fermentation.” The Acid-Alkaline Balance. Since cancer thrives in an acidic environment, one of the easiest ways to fight it is by making your body more alkaline. Acidic foods like dairy, red meat, refined grains and sugar are believed to contribute towards higher rates of cancer diagnosis and death because they contribute towards acidosis, a state in which your bodily fluids and/or tissues become too acidic. This state can lead to diseases like multiple sclerosis, high cholesterol, arrhythmia, immunodeficiency disorders, joint pain, osteoporosis, lethargy, chronic illness, heart disease, and diabetes. On the other hand, eating more alkaline foods, like fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help reverse the condition and improve overall health and wellbeing. Staying hydrated, well rested, and calm, and breathing deeply can also improve the condition. Two of the most powerful tools for alkalizing your body include lemon juice and baking soda. Baking Soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is produced by your pancreas to neutralize excess acid in the digestive system. Multiple people have found that they were able to cure their own cancer by ingesting baking soda. Lemon Juice although lemon juice is acidic on the pH scale, it can actually be used to make water more alkaline. Here’s how to combine these ingredients for a simple cancer-fighting drink! Ingredients: Two tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice or organic apple cider vinegar. 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Instructions: Combine the baking soda into a tall glass containing the lemon juice until it stops fizzing. Pour roughly 8 ounces of water into the glass. Drink the mixture all at once first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Take every day for best results. Learn MEDICAL Vocabulary in English

07:08
http://www.engvid.com Not sure what the difference is between "sick" and "injured"? This lesson will introduce you to some basic medical terms you need to know, like "wound", "cure", "heal", "disease", and more. These terms will help you describe medical conditions and emergencies that will be very useful, especially if you are travelling in an English-speaking country. This lesson is sure to infect you with the English bug! http://www.engvid.com/learn-medical-vocabulary-in-english/ TRANSCRIPT Hi again. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is a bit more practical, especially if you're going to be going to travel in an English-speaking country, you might want to know some of these words. We're going to look at some medical vocabulary, and to talk about the issues that you're facing. Okay? First of all, let's break down the medical vocabulary to three sections. We have injuries, we have illnesses, we have diseases. Okay? First thing to understand, an injury is always about the physical body. Okay? It's bones, it's tissues, it's skin, it's all these things. Illness is inside the body, but it's usually shorter. Okay? It doesn't last a long time, and you can usually get rid of it; you can fix it somehow. Diseases, on the other hand, they're also inside, but they take a long time and quite often they can kill you. Okay? Some diseases, nothing you can do about them; there's no cure for them. But some diseases, you can treat. Okay? We'll talk about that as well. You can treat them, but there's no cure necessarily. So, let's start with injury. An injury to your physical body can come in different forms. All of these are called "wound", "wound", it sounds like an "oo" sound. "Wound". Okay? A wound is when you do something to physically harm your body. A "burn". If you touch the stove... You're pulling out bread from the oven, you touch it. Or the stove, you're cooking something and you touch the hot plate, you will burn your hand. Okay? So, if you burn your hand, it'll stink a little bit, it will hurt a lot, but you can put some lotion on it, take care of it. A "break". Now, if you go skiing and by accident you fall down, you can break your leg. Or if you go bicycling, like off-road, like trail biking, you fall down, you break your leg, break your arm, break something. Like: "crack", a bone inside somewhere broke. But you could also fall and "sprain" something. A sprain means like almost a break. Like, for example, you fall down on your ankle... You can't see my ankle. It's down there, but I'm like twisting it. If I fall down on it, I won't break my bone, but it will get all swollen. Okay? It'll puff up. It'll be blue and black, and very, very painful. And maybe I won't be able to walk on it, but I didn't break anything. Okay? So, these are examples of injuries. Next, we have illness. Now, everybody gets ill at some time. If you say "sickness", it means the same thing. Sickness/illness, exactly the same thing. You can get a "cold". [Coughs] And sneezing, and coughing, and whatever. You can get a "flu" will usually be with a... Usually comes with a fever. Many of you know "influenza", so we just say "flu" for short. Okay? This is not very fun. You sit in bed for a few days, but eventually it goes away, hopefully. And we always... We often talk about a "bug". Now, when we talk about a bug, we're talking usually about a virus. So we say: "There's a bug going around." So during certain times of the year, you'll get on the bus and somebody on the bus is sick or somebody coughed and then grabbed onto the handle. Then you come on the bus, you grab the handle. The bug comes inside you, and then the next day you're ill. You have a flu. You have a cold. You have something. So we say there's a bug going around. Next, we have a disease. Now, a disease is a very harsh thing. Okay? There is mental diseases, there is physical diseases. Something that is "chronic" means that it continues for a long time; it doesn't go away. Like even if I have-[coughs]-a chronic cough, it means I'm always coughing; it doesn't go away. Then, if you get tested and you find out that, for example, you had a tumour let's say. You had something growing inside you, you think maybe it's cancer, you go get it tested and then you find out it's "benign". It means it's not dangerous. It's not going to do anything to you. It won't develop into the disease. But then there are some diseases that are "terminal". "Terminal" means end. So, basically, if you have a terminal disease, you're going to die. Okay? Sad, but true. That's how it works. Cancer is a terminal disease in most cases. In some cases, it goes away for a little while, but it can come back. But if you have a terminal disease, you're probably going to pass away. Now, we "heal" injuries. Okay? You go to a doctor, you go to the hospital, they do something, they fix your arm. Then eventually, after a little bit of time, your broken arm, your broken bone heals.

Does Homeopathy Work?

04:32
This week Reactions pits homeopathy and alternative medicine against science and chemistry to answer the question--does it work? Homeopathy is a category of “alternative medicine” that emerged some 200 years ago. But does it work? Well, we've done our research. While a growing number of people are turning to such remedies to treat a range of health conditions, the majority of data in peer-reviewed scientific literature does not support its effectiveness. Clarifications: 0:23: This example more accurately describes allergen immunotherapy, rather than homeopathy. 3:46: Not all homeopaths and homeopathic manufacturers promote homeopathic products as alternatives to conventional medicines to treat or avoid life threatening acute health conditions. 3:57: In the U.S., homeopathic medicine manufacturers are subject to FDA oversight with regards to their production facilities. However, unlike for conventional medications, homeopathic products are not reviewed by FDA for efficacy or safety. 05:52
This video is about how I got into Medical School without taking an MCAT! &how you can too!(: As promised - If you guys have any questions at all, please let me know! Thank you for the support! If i missed/messed up on anything, let me know! I'll update ASAP! - Rashid Undergraduates - These programs do not require an MCAT These two medical schools let all students apply to their EAP program ICAHN SOM http://icahn.mssm.edu/education/medical/admissions/flexmed/requirements University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences http://www.utoledo.edu/med/md/admissions/medstart.html No MCAT required. “The student must apply to the program in the junior year of their undergraduate studies degree program at an accredited U.S. College or University. *Note: The MedStart Program will not consider applicants who plan to accelerate their coursework and graduate early.” University of Florida College of Medicine “The program is intended for undergraduate students who have demonstrated superior scholastic ability and personal development during their first two academic years of enrollment at any 4 year accredited science degree granting institution, and who are dedicated to pursuing medicine as a career. When accepted to this program, a student secures a place in medical school at the University of Florida College of Medicine as long as the MHP requirements are completed and academic standards are maintained.” http://mhp.med.ufl.edu/ Upstate Medical University “The Early Assurance Program offers early acceptance to undergraduate students in their second year of college. Applicants must have sophomore standing and be enrolled at any accredited undergraduate institution. Students that have completed two years of college study but have advanced standing due to AP credit are eligible to apply. The EAP program is designed to free students from the pressures associated with applying to numerous medical schools, allowing them more freedom to pursue unique academic interests and experiences. It is NOT intended to accelerate the length of time of an undergraduate education.” http://www.upstate.edu/com/admissions/options/soph.php The following schools only accept their own students: Dartmouth SOM http://www.dartmouth.edu/prehealth/applying/geisel_early.html Tuft University School of Medicine http://medicine.tufts.edu/Admissions/Special-Admissions-Options/Early-Assurance-Program/Eligibility Georgetown University http://premed.georgetown.edu/undergraduates/eap Wake Forest http://www.wakehealth.edu/School/MD-Program/Admissions/Early-Assurance-Program.htm University of California, Riverside SOM https://medschool.ucr.edu/admissions/eap.html For High School Students (something to think about when you guys are applying to colleges!) https://www.noodle.com/articles/guarantee-med-school-admission-with-these-5-bsmd-programs Combined BS/MD Programs http://www.ivyplanners.com/documents/BS-MD-IvyPlanners.pdf This website has a ton of schools on there Note: *asterik means MCAT not required Very useful chart http://www.directbsmd.com/7-year-bsmd-programs.html
