In this lesson James Taylor of the Music Business Institute goes through the 7 steps of successful music marketing. It's both a blueprint and a roadmap that you can also use to create the kind of music career you desire. It's also deceptively simple although the implementation will require that you learn some step-by-step techniques and tactics. 1. Build Your Fan Lists What is the one thing that all successful artists have in common - LISTS. Lists are the lifeblood of your business as a musician and without them it's almost impossible to make a living from your craft. 2. Develop Relationships With Fans The relationship with your lists will sustain you emotionally, creatively and financially over many, many years if you do it right. However if you disrespect your lists, speak down to them, or treat them as just a source of income then you are likely to have a very short career in music indeed. 3. Learn What Fans Want There exists two main schools (or Tribes) in the marketing of music, the Cool Kids and The Musicpreneur. These two tribes have very different thoughts when it comes to innovation in music and the idea of listening to your fans. 4. Create Work That Excites Fans A musician today has two jobs; creating and communicating. Music Business Institute is primarily about teaching the latter rather than the former because we have to assume you know how to create exciting work. Creating is about honing your craft as a musician. Communicating is about learning how to market and sell what you have created. It's why we call it the Music Business. Music + Business. 5. Identify Fan Type OK, by this point you know that building lists, developing relationships with them, learning what they want and creating work that excites them is important. The 'fan ladder' looks to move someone from just being mildly interested in your music to where they will buy everything you ever produce (concert tickets, recordings, merchandise). You want to move them from being a 'suspect' to a 'super fan' or "true fans". 6. Empower Super Fans Successful artists always have their own small army of super fans. Beliebers (Justin Bieber), Swifties (Taylor Swift), Little Monsters (Lady Gaga), Lovatics (Demi Lovato) and Smilers (Miley Cyrus) are all examples of Super Fans. 7. Promote Work Using Events The final step is about promoting your work using events. Firstly events they create excitement around your music. There are different types of events which can be used to promote your work. There are product launch events, tour announcement events, promotional events and many more. Expertly organized audience engagement plays a significant role in the development of contemporary art institutions. As culture changes, it in turn changes its audience; society today chooses active involvement in creative processes instead of passive observation of completed forms. Because of this, the main ways of attracting new audiences have become open dialogue and access to projects in the making. During the talk, Morris Hargreaves McIntyre consultant Jackie Hay spoke about the history of cultural marketing, concentrating on the evolution it has gone through over the past 40 years. Using a range of case studies, including the UK’s major cultural organizations, she demonstrate how institutions can come up with a precise idea of their audiences and effectively communicate with them. A coach at Morris Hargreaves McIntyre, Jackie Hay is New Zealand’s pioneering researcher in the field of audience development and engagement. Jackie has worked at many major cultural events, including the New Zealand Festival, New Zealand International Film Festival, and Wellington Fringe Festival, building new relations between artists and audiences with the help of digital and social media. She was the head of NZLive.com—New Zealand’s official event-finder website—at the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, and has worked as assistant director at the REAL New Zealand Festival, the country’s biggest cultural event. Her work at Creative New Zealand included design and implementation of the Arts Council’s National Audience Development Program. At Morris Hargreaves McIntyre, Jackie focuses on strategic audience development and research. Morris Hargreaves McIntyre (MHM) is an award-winning cultural strategy and research agency, a leading expert and knowledge platform for cultural institutions around the world. This week Eric Worre gives you 10 Strategies to Become an Event Promotion Machine, and ideas on how you can be a world class promoter. Promotion in network marketing is the number one highest paid skill. The people who can get people to make a decision to go and attend an event, they get paid bigger than anybody else in network marketing… When people go to events, their vision changes, their game plan changes, and their view of the future changes. In this video Eric is discussing event promotion for the promotional partners of the upcoming Recruiting Mastery event, but the concept is the same regardless of the event or company. Strategy #1 is to Promote. As Eric explains, don’t confuse Promotion with Announcements. Most people announce, and announcements don’t create promotion. Make sure people know that you are committed to it also, let them know the value and benefits. For example, “Here’s all the things you’re going to get if you decide to attend this event with us.” Promotion is all inclusive. Strategy #2, promote to your entire team. Talk about what they are going to learn. Talk about the relationships, talk about the fun, adventure, excitement and ideas. Talk about all the benefits they would get by being there. Strategy #3 – Work With Your Leaders. Identify key leaders that are going to be part of your promotional team. Give those people some benefits for promotion and results, such as maybe you have a special dinner or party for those people, or maybe some incentives or some bonus recognition. Use your leaders to create leverage. Get your team involved. Strategy #4 –Prizes or awards. Maybe you could benefit by not just selling tickets, but you could use a few as giveaways, or incentives or bonuses. Maybe you’ve got a leg that needs to be built up in order for you to move to the next level. You can tell the people in your organization that if they achieve XYZ, then you have give them a ticket as a reward, as incentive, as a contest in order to be able to provide an incentive for them to do the task that’s going to reward you not only short term but long term. Strategy #5 – Recognition. Recognize the people who register. Recognize the people who register early. Recognize the people who are on the leadership team. Recognize they’re stepping out and getting outside of their comfort zone. Recognize them on Facebook. Recognize them on email. Recognize them on conference calls. Recognize them however you want to recognize them, but recognition drives behavior, it really, really does. Strategy #6 – Create an Event Within the Event. For example, if you are promoting an event, let them know of a special acticity or party you have planned just for your team. Create a little get together before the event even starts to get them excited and focused. There are lunches, breakfasts, dinners, workouts, or anything you want to do inside of your team. Create some extra things. Strategy #7 - Repetition. Repetition being the idea that you can’t just announce this and you can’t just invite people, you have to promote, which means repeat it over and over and over and over and over again for people to realize that you’re serious about this. Strategy #8 – Host Hotels. Create a host hotel if your event isn’t located in a hotel. Use it as party central. Maybe throw a pool part the day before the event, or have a party in lounge, or appetizers or dinner. Engage in those activities as a team. Use the hotel to help create some excitement. Strategy #9 - No. 9. Corporate or Cross Line. Talk to people that maybe you have good relationship with that are cross line to you, and see if they want a little chunk of your tickets in order to bring part of their team. Also talk to Corporate and see if they want to use tickets as incentives or scholarships. And finally Strategy #10 – Create breakout sessions for your team after the event is over. This will really help your team absorb the materials that were presented and create strategy that everyone can implement so you all are rowing on the same team.
