A German Internet Marketer tells his secret - http://www.the-next-revolution.com/ We move on to the next point, the market analysis: in which market segment do I wish to be active? What is the nature of this market? The first thing to consider is your target group. Consider this question: who are you trying to reach? Many people respond, “Oh, everyone. Everyone has to eat. Everyone has to go to the hairdresser. My target group is everyone.” When you take this approach, you are near enough condemning yourself to failure. Though it might seem tricky, it’s crucial that you specify your target group. Where do they live? What do they do? How old are they? What kind of hobbies do they have? Am I targeting males or females? Define your target group very clearly. Some firms even sketch out their target group without familiarising themselves with their targets in real life – they have no customer contact. They pull together an image of how they see their typical customer, and proceed according to that. This is because, nowadays, it is impossible to design a catch-all product or service. Everyone has their own individual identity. You must identify a particular target group and establish yourself within it. Later, you will have chance to expand; but you should begin with a relatively clear-cut target group. When you have recruited this group as fans of your product or brand, you can start to broaden your horizons a little. Consider where else your product could have relevance. Or perhaps you could expand your range of products within this particular target group. Whatever you decide to do later, it is crucial that you identify precisely who you target group is. Do not adopt this “for-all” approach - the mentality that all who pass by your store will automatically become your customers. This will not be the case. If you try to accommodate this, you will end up with an assortment of goods that - like your target group - is not clearly defined. Imagine someone entering your shop. “What is this place actually for?” they will ask themselves. “What’s this? Is this a toyshop or a shoe shop or a shop for fur coats? There’s nothing they don’t sell!” Without a clear-cut target group, you’ll end up offering a confusing, nonsensical array of products. You won’t win any proper customers, and the whole thing will be doomed to fail from the off. The target group is crucial! Next to be addressed, of course, are your competitors: who is already established in the market? What are their strengths and weaknesses? It happens frequently that a budding entrepreneur will get their venture going and only realise afterwards that there’s an identical store two streets away. Now, this doesn’t necessarily have to be a disaster: you can drive your competitors out of the market. However, this will be considerably more difficult than simply establishing a business for which there is no competition.

You don't have to over-focus on your competition and obsess about it, but you should study your competition and understand what direction they are moving towards, and always think about whether that is something that might also be good for your business. When you do your competitive market analysis, consider that your competition are essentially your business peers. Even though you may have negative feelings about them, there are few people who understand what you are going through, and the challenges you face like your direct competitors. http://www.smallbusinessbc.ca When it comes to researching your business, people don't know where to find answers. What questions to ask? What tools are available to use? Market research is key to understanding the viability of our businesses. Without it, we can't truly understand who wants to buy our product, or if there's enough profit to make a living. We won't know who our customers are, what the competition is up to, or how new trends will impact our business. A great way to start your research is by investigating three key elements of your market: Identify your target market. Considerations range from age, income, and ethnicity to personality, values and attitude. Know your competition. Use business directories, web searches and industry knowledge to gather the latest information on your competitors. What are the current and future trends of your market? Consider technological opportunities or threats and exploring social media outlets. You can approach these points by using a number of free services online. 'Survey Monkey' will help you create a survey. Social media outlets such as Twitter and Facebook are a great way to distribute your surveys online. There are also websites that will help you. BC BizMap has information about your target market. Vancouver Public Library Online Databases will help locate customers and identify competition and of course, smallbusinessbc.ca is full of useful information. Once you have acquired market research, create a viability report that will indicate whether you should proceed or put your idea on hold. This includes researching the costs of operating, required revenues to cover your costs, and do you have enough customers to make your idea viable? Finally, don't forget to pay yourself. According to a Royal Bank survey of small business owners, when asked if they could start their business over again, 59 percent said they would have done more market research. How To Do Market Research – Basic Online Market Research For Your Business
How great would it be to know what your customers wanted before they even asked for it? Can you imaging what it would do for your business and your reputation to always have a collection of highly sought after products or services? You’d quickly become the go-to expert in your field and customers would know they could count on you to solve their problems quickly and easily. And that’s why on this episode of we’re talking all about market research, and I’ll give you 5 ways to know what your customers want before they even do. #1 Google Trends Google trends allows you to track which keywords are increasing in popularity and provides suggestions for other terms that are rising in search volume. This is a hugely valuable tool and for the most part is largely ignored, which means that by using it you’re gaining valuable insights that your competitors are likely not using. #2 Google Keyword Planner To use the keyword planner you first need to sign up for a free Google Adwords account. Even if you’re not planning on advertising it’s still a good thing to have. From there you can access their free Keyword Planner, type in a keyword and receive not only the number of searches for that keyword, but also a list of suggested keywords that people are looking for online each and every month. #3 Facebook Insights The best way to use Facebook Insights is to post a variety of different content to your business page (all related to your business of course) and see which posts get the most engagement (such as likes, shares, and comments). From there you can determine what type of content your audience is most interested in so you can start to create more just like it, and eventually, products and services around those subjects. #4 Twitter Insights Twitter audiences allow you to really drill down on the types of things your customers and followers are interested in. As an example, for my account I can see that my audience is made up mostly of people interested in entrepreneurship, marketing, travel, and technology. #5 Google Alerts The final piece of our customer understanding puzzle comes again from the search engine giant, Google. Google Alerts allows you to monitor what’s happening with your customers right now. The way to use Google Alerts is to enter a keyword that you would like to track into the search bar at the top of the page, then Google will email you when this keyword appears online. You can use this to track your businesses name, the industry you’re in, your own name, your competitors, or pretty much anything else you can think of. Customer Insights Using even one of these tools can help you gain a better understanding of your customers. But when you combine all 5, you’re really able to create a clear and compelling picture of your customers wants, needs, and behaviors. As a full-time business plan writer, one of the questions I get asked commonly is how do I project revenues and expenses when the business is not established yet and there is no data. The truth is, there's always data. It may not be data from the business that is looking to protect their financial statements, but there is data from comparables. This is why the market research and Industry analysis section of the business plan is so important. The market research and Industry analysis section of the business plan creates a basis of assumption for projecting the financial statements. The market research allows you to find data on population growth, income statistics, racial demographics and more. The industry analysis allows you to grab data on your industry and competitors. This includes information such as common industry profit margins, industry wages and more. By looking at this data, you can form an educated guess, also called an assumption, which allows you to project your revenues and expenses. For example, if you are opening up a restaurant, the market research may show data for how many people come into the plaza where you will lease space. The industry analysis will show you food cost and what is commonly going on in the industry. All of this information is used as the basis for your marketing plan and financial projections. When you are an established business, you simply look back at your data. For example, if you have been operating a restaurant for the last three years, then you can look at how much money was made, what was the busy season, what was the most popular selling plate, and more. These will form strong assumptions to project your revenues and expenses next year. You will begin to see a pattern in regards to how much money you're spending on marketing, or where you are marketing, and how much revenue is being made. This should end up being a mathematical formula. For example, the restaurant owners spent 10000 + marketing a year and made $100,000, and then another year they spent $20,000 on marketing a year and made $200,000, and so on.
