A management information system (MIS) focuses on the management of information technology to provide efficiency and effectiveness or strategy decision making. The concept may include systems termed transaction processing system, decision support system, expert system, or executive information system. The term is often used in the academic study of businesses and has connections with other areas, such as information systems, information technology, informatics, e-commerce and computer science; as a result, the term is used interchangeably with some of these areas. Management information systems (plural) as an academic discipline studies people, technology, organizations, and the relationships among them. This definition relates specifically to "MIS" as a course of study in business schools. Many business schools (or colleges of business administration within universities) have an MIS department, alongside departments of accounting, finance, management, marketing, and may award degrees (at undergraduate, master, and doctoral levels) in Management Information Systems. MIS professionals help organizations to maximize the benefit from investments in personnel, equipment, and business processes. There are different areas of concentration with different duties and responsibilities in information system managers starting from the Chief information officer (CIOs), Chief technology officer (CTOs), IT directors and IT security managers. Chief information officers (CIOs) are responsible for the overall technology strategy of their organizations. Basically, they are more of the decision makers and action takers when it comes down to determining the technology or information goals of an organization and making sure the necessary planning to implement those goals is being met. Chief technology officers (CTOs) are responsible for evaluating how new technology can help their organization. They usually recommend technological solutions to support the policies issued by the CIO. IT directors including MIS directors are in charge of both their organization's Information technology departments and the supervision of thereof. They are also in charge of implementing the policies chosen by the other top branches (CIOs, CTOs). It is their role to ensure the availability of data and network services by coordinating IT activities. IT Security Managers oversee the network and security data as the title implies. They develop programs to offer information and awareness to their employees about security threats. This team is very important because they must keep up-to-date on IT security measures in order to be successful within their organization. Any security violations need to be investigated and supervised by this specific team.

Free Computer Skills Course: Learn the core concepts of file management, including folders, filenames, and file extensions. Transcript: In order to accomplish any kind of real project on a computer, it’s important to have a solid understanding of file management. Let’s start with the fundamentals. No matter what operating system you’re running – whether it’s Windows, Mac OS, or Linux, all data on a computer is stored as files. A file is basically a chunk of a certain kind of data. There are many kinds of files, including video files, audio files, image files, text files, and many more. In order to keep files organized, we use Folders. A folder on your computer is just like a real-life folder – it’s a place you can put files to separate them into groups that make sense. Every folder has a folder name, and every file has a filename. The filename serves a couple purposes. The first purpose is to help you, the user, identify what that file is about. So if you wrote an essay about climate change, for example, you might name that file ‘climate essay’. The second purpose of the file name is to help the computer recognize what kind of file it is, so that it knows what program it should use to open that file. There is a special part of the file name that is used for this purpose. It’s called the File Extension. At the end of every filename there is a period, and the letters or numbers that come after this are the file extension. The file extension is very important, because without it, the computer doesn’t know what kind of file it is, or what to do with it. It’s good to keep this in mind when you rename a file, because if you accidentally change or remove the file extension, your computer might not be able to open it anymore, and you’ll have to rename it again and put the file extension back in order to fix this problem. Let’s take a look at some common file extensions, grouped by category. We’ve got some that are for audio, some that are for video, some that are for images, some that are for a variety of different types of documents, and then a few other important ones. This may look like a lot, but in reality there are actually many, many more. You may be wondering why there are so many file extensions. Why are there a dozen different formats just to store one kind of data? The answer is that even though they may store the same kind of data, they do it differently. For example, among the audio formats, some are uncompressed, meaning that the audio is high quality but takes up a lot of space, and some are compressed, meaning that they sacrifice a bit of quality in order to take up less space. One of the most common compressed formats that you’ll probably recognize is MP3, and one of the most common uncompressed formats is WAV or ‘wave’. A similar comparison can be drawn between some of the image formats. For example, a PNG is higher quality but takes up more space, while a JPEG sacrifices some quality for smaller size. Another reason for the length of this list is that many programs have their own specific formats and file extensions. Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Photoshop are just a few of the examples shown here. All of these file extensions may seem a bit overwhelming at first, but there’s no need to know all of them; the ones that are important to your specific work will soon become familiar. That concludes this video. In the next one, we’ll take a hands-on look at working with files and folders in an operating system.

Hear from Christian Posta, Principal Architect, Red Hat in this breakout session at Red Hat Summit 2017. One of the tenants of microservices, and a way to minimize dependencies, is that “a service should own its own database.” This is easier said than done. Why? Because: your data. In working with data in information systems for 5 decades, application developers have accepted the practice of using relational databases and relying on all of their safety guarantees. But, as we build services architectures that span more than one database by design (as with microservices), things get harder. How do we synchronize data across databases, especially heterogeneous data? Developing for the traditional enterprise, we have to build fast-changing systems that are surrounded by legacy systems with complicated domains like finance, insurance, and retail. So, how do we develop and reason about the boundaries in our system to reduce complexity in the domain? In this session, we’ll explore these problems and see how domain driven design (DDD) helps grapple with the domain complexity. We’ll see how DDD concepts like entities and aggregates help us understand boundaries—based on use cases and how transactions are affected. With transactional boundaries, we can more carefully adjust our needs from the CAP theorem to scale out and achieve autonomous systems with eventual strictly ordered consistency. We’ll see how technologies like Apache Kafka, Apache Camel, and Debezium.io can help build the backbone for these types of systems. Site Visit: Google Energy Management Information Systems
www.bukaymedia.com AFE members and guests had the privilege of visiting Google's West Campus building 5 in Mountain View, CA. to take a behind-the-scene look at the Internet search giant's Energy Management Information Systems (EMIS). After an exclusive lunch provided to the sold-out event by Google chefs, we were treated to a slide show presentation by Richard Celio, P.E. of longtime EMIS provider Applied Power Technologies on "Energy Management Information Systems Success Criteria: The missing piece of the puzzle." The presentation topics included: why BMS/EMS information, alone, does not provide answers; how to leverage EMIS investments with customized automated reports sent to your email inbox or smart phone; and how to define success criteria by using cost, reliability, quality, impact, and efficiency indicators. Following this, Google engineers presented real-time monitoring displays and in-depth discussions on: customizing energy management dashboards; augmenting EMIS with display monitors, Gmail, and Android smart phones; energy projects including cogeneration, solar, and fuel cell technologies; maintenance contracts; automated demand systems for temperature control; just-in-time resource management; and evaluating the cost-effectiveness of retrofitting older buildings and calculating the ROI for upgrades. Our hosts and presenters demonstrated tremendous passion for their work! Google hires top-talent and provides them with the resources and freedom to experiment and innovate and to help usher in new energy-wise technologies. Combining the talents of facility engineers with information technology professionals has greatly facilitated the evolution of their energy management system. Engineers started with just one building and gradually added more buildings to the EMIS. After the presentations and extensive attendee networking, Asim Tahir of Google guided us to the wall of wide-screen monitors that display real-time energy management information from throughout the campus. A special thank you goes out to Dan Hoffman, Pat Nielsen, Dan Cocosa, Asim Tahir, and Kristina Dee for hosting this event and conducting very informative presentations and discussions. How can new knowledge be mined from big data? What are the technical and social problems with big data? What is cloud computing and cloud services? What are examples of applications? The course is offered by the Knowledge Management and Innovation Research Center (KMIRC) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Most of our research are company and industrial based. Capabilities and competencies of the KMIRC are further strengthened by the international alliances it has formed with leading practitioners whom many are regarded as in the "Hall of Fame" of knowledge management, and renowned research centers worldwide.
