DNS Split Brain

12:09
Split-Brain DNS is when the same DNS name is used for internal and external clients. This video looks at the problems associated with Split-Brain and how it may be configured to get around these problems. The choice of Split-Brain or the alterative whole brain approach is up to the individual administrator to decide which approach is best for the network that they support. Download Handout http://itfreetraining.com/handouts/dns/dnssplitbrain.pdf Network Example If you use the same DNS name for the internal network and the external network, the simplest way to implement this would be to use the same zone data on the internal and external network. The problem with this approach is twofold. Firstly this means that the internal DNS records are now exposed to the internet and a hacker may get this information. Using this information, the hacker can foot print the network and gain a good understanding of how many clients and what types of services you have on the network. The second problem is that internal clients may use different IP addresses to access resources than external clients. For example, the company web site may have an external IP Address but the routing on the network does not correctly route internal clients to the web page. In order for this to occur, the internal clients must use an internal IP Address. The DNS server will not know which IP Address to respond with. Whole Brain DNS The whole brain approach is when different domain names are used for the internal and external network. A common approach is to use .local for internal networks and .com for external networks. Using this approach it is quite easy to understand and set up for the administrator. It does however make it a little more complex for the user and thus you are making a trade off from a simple network to look after to one that is more complicated for the end user to use. Using the whole brain approach means that if a hacker were to gain access to the DNS records in the .com namespace, these DNS records are publicity available anyway so this is not really a security concern. The .local records are used on the internal network and thus a lot harder for a hacker to gain access to these. If the internal DNS server cannot resolve a DNS request, for example it is asked for the IP Address of google.com, this DNS request can be forwarded to the other DNS server which can resolve it. This adds additional security to the network meaning that the internal DNS server does not have to communicate directly with the internet. Split-Brain DNS The best way to implement split-brain is to have two different zone files for the same DNS name. The internal DNS server would hold its own set of DNS records while the external DNS server would hold a different set. This means that if an attacker was to gain access to the external DNS server, they would only be able to gain access to DNS records that are publicity available. Problem with Split-Brain The problem with Split Brain is that depending on how a user accesses the network will determine which resources they will be directed to. The most common example is when the user connects via a VPN connection. When connected via a VPN connect the user will be accessing the network just like they were in the office. If you have resources with the same name, like web server or mail servers, the user may be directed to the wrong service. This can become more complicated when you have companies with different offices and divisions around the world. Making sure the user is directed correctly can become quite difficult. When a user connects using a service like DirectAccess, DirectAccess has the ability to configure rules which will direct the user to resources based on their connection. Although this is possible, it does make it more difficult for the administrator as the rules need to be configured. DNS Records

11:33
In order to find resources on the network, computers need a system to look up the location of resources. Check out http://YouTube.com/ITFreeTraining or http://itfreetraining.com for more of our always free training videos. This video looks at the DNS records that contain information about resources and services on the network. The client can request these records from a DNS server in order to locate resources like web sites, Active Directory Domains and Mail Servers just to name a few. http://ITFreeTraining.com/handouts/dn... In this video This video will look at the following DNS records: Host (A and AAAA): Contains IP Addresses for IPv4 and IPv6 hosts Alias (CNAME): Works just like a shortcut for files except for DNS records. Mail Exchange (MX): Holds the address of mail servers for that domain. Service Record (SRV): Holds the address of services on the network. E.g. Active Directory DC's. Start of Authority (SOA): Contains information and configuration for a zone file. Name Server (NS): Contain the address of other DNS servers for that zone. Pointer (PTR): Reverse look up record allowing a hostname for an IP Address to be look up. Host (A and AAAA) The host record is used to store the address of a hostname. "A" is used for IPv4 and AAAA (Quad A) for IPv6. These can be created manually in DNS or if dynamic DNS is enabled and the client can register its hostname and thus its IP Address with the DNS server. Alias (CName) A canonical name or CName record provides an alias service in DNS. A CName effectively points to another A or Quad A record. When the client requests the hostname that is contained in the CName, they are given the IP Address that is contained in the A record or Quad A record. The advantage of a CName is that it can provide a simple name to the user rather than a more complex server name. For example, instead of having to remember FS27 for the local file server, a CName of FS could be used to point towards the server FS27. CName's can also be used to transparently redirect network traffic. For example, if you changed you mind and wanted to redirect the user to FS28 you would only need to change the CName record to point to FS28 rather than FS27. It should be remembered that the old record may exist in the client cache and may take some time to expire. Mail Exchange (MX) The mail exchange record contains a mail server that is able to process mail for that domain name. When a mail server wants to deliver mail, it will perform a DNS lookup asking the DNS server for an MX record for that DNS Domain name. The mail server will then attempt to deliver mail to that server. The mail server does not need to have the same DNS name as the mail that is being delivered, it simply needs to understand how to process mail for that DNS domain name. The MX record also has priority value that can be configured. If two or more MX Exchange records exist for the same DNS Doman name, the MX record with the lowest priority will be tried first. If this fails, the MX record with the next lowest value will be tried until the mail is delivered. Often large companies will have multiple mail severs for incoming mail. In some cases, these additional mail servers may be located on different sides of the globe in case there is a long network outage. Service Record (SRV) Service records allow clients on the network to find resources on the network. Active Directory creates a number of service records in DNS to allow clients to find resources like Domain Controllers. This is why Active Directory cannot operate without DNS. A single service record has a number of data fields associated with it. These include, service, target, port and priority. Service records are normally created automatically by applications assuming that your DNS server allows dynamic updates. Start of Authority (SOA) There is one start of authority record (SOA) for each zone. Even though the SOA is technically a DNS record, essentially modification of the SOA record is performed through the properties of the DNS zone. Looking at the data in the SOA record, you can configure options for the zone like the primary name server for that zone (DNS servers that hold the master records for the zone), the e-mail address of an administrator, serial number (Incremented each time a change is made in the DNS zone) and the refresh time for the zone (How often a secondary zone should query a master for changes). Video description to long for YouTube. For full description please see http://itfreetraining.com/70-642/dns-... Install Exchange 2016 on Windows Server 2016 from scratch

01:02:10
Hi guys this is my new video on how to install Exchange 2016 on Windows Server 2016 TP3. I do it from scratch so you can see me creating the virtual machine, Installing Windows Server 2016, Installing Active Directory, Promoting the server to a Domain Controller, Installing Exchange Server 2016 and then browse through the Outlook Web App and the Exchange Administrative Center. Here is a step by step guide on what we do in the video : 1. I create a Virtual Machine using VMWare Workstation. Preferably with the most resources like CPU and RAM that you can spare. Attach the downloaded Windows Server iso file to the DVD/CD. 2. Start the VM and boot from CD which has the Windows Server 2016 iso attached. 3. We choose Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview (Server with Desktop Experience) 4. We configure a static IP and change the name of the server and reboot 5. Once the server is back from reboot we install Active Directory Domain Services from Server Manager. Add Roles and Features 6. Follow along the auto-selected Features as well 7. After the installation has finished go to Server Manager and click on the flag and choose to Promote this server to domain controller 8. On the wizard step 1, choose 3rd option. Add a new forest 9. Type the domain name below. Root domain name:_______ 10. Select Forest and Domain Functional level – Windows Server 2016/Technical Preview 11. Check the Domain Name System (DNS) Server 12. Type in a Directory Services Restore Mode password 13. Ignore the Warning for DNS delegation and go Next 14. Type in a NetBIOS name. Example. If contoso.com, you can choose just contoso. Use the default one at best 15. Recommended that you don’t change the AD paths in the next section 16. If no errors and just warnings proceed with Install 17. After the reboot log back in and copy over the Exchange installation files to your server 18. Start the setup 19. Go through the initial setup screen with Next, then choose Recommended settings (not that important choice, whatever you like) and go to Next. 20. Choose Mailbox role and check “Automatically install Windows Server roles and features…” and click Next 21. Recommended that you leave the default path of “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15” 22. Type in an Exchange Organization Name. Can be whatever you like. Do not check “Apply Active Directory split permissions” 23. If you want malware protection leave at “No” and click Next. 24. The prerequisites check starts. Once it finishes you should only have one Error for missing the Microsoft Unified Communications Managed API 4.0 64-bit. The rest should be warnings. Download the API from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=34992. 25. If you have problems downloading due to error in Internet Explorer “Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded” go to your Internet Options in your Internet Explorer. Go to tab Security. Click on Custom Level and browse to Downloads and change from Disable to Enable. 26. Download and Install the API. Retry the Readiness Check. 27. It should be only warnings and the Retry button to be replaced by Install button. Click and sit back for an hour. 28. Your Exchange should be installed now. Here are some tips 29. Your Outlook Web App or Outlook on the Web, as it’s called in 2016 is on the same URL as before – https://localhost/owa and your Exchange Administration Center is on – https://localhost/ecp. 30. For your email flow to be full you need to create a Send Connector. In your Admin Center, go to Mail Flow and then Send Connectors. Click + to create a new one. 31. Put a name for it. For type – Choose Internet 32. Leave it on MX record associated 33. Address space – click + and only add * to the “Full Qualified Domain Name” field. This means that through this send connector your will be able to send to all the domains in the world. Leave the cost at 1. 34. On the next menu click + and add your own server 35. There we go you should be having a start-up working Exchange Server 2016 from scratch !!! Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe for more awesome videos.
