Trade Wars: How they work and who they impact

05:09
Experts say trade wars have historically been damaging to both the country imposing the tariffs and those having to pay them. So why is U.S. President Donald Trump insisting on entering a trade war? Aalia Adam leads the latest installment of "Global News Explains," as she explores why the protectionist methods of trade wars create environments where everyone loses and how the U.S. only needs to look to the Great Depression to understand the perils of aggressive trade tariffs. The Dollar-Yuan Exchange Rate is a Very Poor Trade Candidate for Trade Wars

10:16
Talking Points: • Trade wars are a critical fundamental theme that will likely motivate much of the volatility and momentum in the near future • While it is essential to account for this global stand off - and even take advantage - the Dollar-Yuan is a poor outlet • Being so close to the heart of trade wars, a conduit for remarkably uncertainty and presumed intervention makes USDCNH a risk See how retail traders are positioning in USDJPY, other FX crosses, indices, gold and oil intraday using the DailyFX speculative positioning data on the sentiment page. From Trade War to Currency War?

29:06
Throughout his campaign and since becoming president, Donald Trump repeatedly accused China of currency manipulation, regardless of whether the RMB rises or falls. Also, lately, speculation over interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve has made the US dollar stronger against many other currencies. So, as we await the imminent US Treasury semi-annual foreign-exchange report, what’s happening with the values of currency? What does a stronger dollar mean to global financial markets? Also, what effect would the continued labeling of China as "currency manipulator" have in the ongoing trade war? Won-Dollar Exchange Rate

01:27
[Anchor Lead] The exchange rate between the Korean Won and U.S. Dollar has plunged to its lowest level in three months in the wake of Donald Trump's inauguration, putting Korean businesses on high alert. Let’s find out more. [Pkg] The won-dollar exchange rate, which rose three won the previous day, nosedived 12 won as soon as the market opened. Although the market managed to buffer the plunge, the won-dollar exchange rate closed at 1,158 won per dollar, the lowest level in 83 days. [Soundbite] Seo Jung-hoon(KEB Hana Bank) : "The currency exchange rate soared on the strong dollar, but then all of a sudden plummeted rapidly." The higher value of the Korean currency is a stumbling block for export businesses, because it inevitably undermines price competitiveness. Analysts say that a decrease in the exchange rate by just a hundred won results in quarterly losses of hundreds of billions of won for major manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics. [Soundbite] Lee Chang-seon(LG Economic Research Inst.) : "If the U.S. goes for protectionism and the foreign currency fluctuations intensify, businesses will have a hard time predicting the future, while export conditions will deteriorate." If Chinese exports to the U.S. hit a snag due to the escalating currency war between the two nations, Korean exports of intermediary materials to China will inevitably suffer a blow.

Currency Wars: Exchange Intervention in a Floating World

20:00
Macroeconomics Presentation: In order to expedite recovery from the 2008 economic crisis, countries are devaluing their currency to make their exports more affordable and competitive. This paradoxical 'fight to be weak' has escalated into currency wars, which have potential to develop into trade wars and stifle world-wide economic growth. This video addresses three currency war cases in Switzerland, Brazil and China, and defines related macroeconomic factors. Currency Wars and What Happened with the Swiss Franc?

08:47
Just a really quick and simple video explaining: - What happened the other day with the Swiss - What is a currency war and why it happens - How to profit from the ECB launching a QE program! More info, please visit: www.InvestingStarterPack.com and www.TheRealisticTrader.com This is only a basic explanation. I have to state (for the more technical minded) that QE doesn't necessarily mean that they will 'print' more currency. Typically the way the Central Banks do QE is by buying up bonds or other asset backed securities. For instance, the FED in the US mainly bought US Treasury Bills. If the ECB does do QE then it's likely to do it with mortgage backed securities and a selection of Eurobonds. But all you need to remember is that QE is just a way for a Central Bank to control how much of their currency is out there and to get more of it circulating. And the more Euros they can get out there by buying 'stuff', the more it dilutes/devalues the currency...which then makes the currency fall in value against others...

the relationship between the current account balance and exchange rates of RMB against USD

16:08
A nation's balance of payments measures all economic transactions between that nation's people and the people of all other nations. A country that spends more on imports than it earns from the sale of its exports is said to have a trade deficit. Such imbalances have become controversial topics of debate in political and economic circles, particularly over the last decade as the Chinese economy has emerged as the world's largest exporter. As goods and services flow from one country to another, the exchange rates of those countries' currencies tend to fluctuate to promote balanced trade between the two nations. However, in some cases, most notably China, a country's central bank will intervene in the market for its own currency to manage its exchange rate against that of a trading partner. When such interventions occur, the normal, moderating effect that rising and falling exchange rates has on trade flows is disrupted, and trade imbalances can become persistent. This Video illustrates how trade flows should lead to appreciation and depreciation of currencies in a floating exchange rate system, and then explain how in the case of China, central bank policy aimed at buying large quantities of US government debt keeps the supply of Chinese currency high in the US and the demand for US dollars high in China. This means the dollar remains stronger than it otherwise might relative to the Chinese RMB, contributing to the persistent trade deficits the US exhibits in its trade with China.

The Exchange Wars: Swiss Franc vs. Euro

01:20
Multi- Act Chairman Prashant Trivedi explains why the Swiss Franc devaluation in 2015 was such a momentous occasion. The Swiss Central Bank had the fastest growth rate of any Central Bank and a fixed exchange rate with the Euro. After declaring a loss on accumulated Euros amounting to 7.5% of GDP, the Swiss Central Bank took off its peg on the EUR-CHF exchange rate. It was the first time a Central Bank admitted that it had lost stating “We give up. The market is bigger than us.” Click here for the full presentation - http://bit.ly/1FQIfVs

South Korea and Thailand cut official rates overnight adding to recent reductions by China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam. All these countries operate pegged exchange rates. Central bankers won’t utter the term, but the rising wave of surprise rate cuts has the strong sense of a currency war. In many of these countries rates were already very low and it is hard to see how a few basis points lower can actually solve any growth problems. Draghi dismisses currency war talk

01:10
http://www.euronews.com/ Europe Central Bank head Mario Draghi has been trying to play down worries about currency wars. At the European Parliament on Monday, he responded to concerns that the recent high value of the euro against other currencies could choke off the region's economic recovery. Though the ECB will keep a close eye on things, Draghi made it clear he does not believe countries are deliberately weakening their currencies: "Most of the exchange rate movements that we have seen were not explicitly targeted, they were the result of domestic macro-economic policies meant to boost the economy. In this sense the exchange rate is not a policy target, but its important for growth and price stability." Over the weekend, G 20 finance ministers and central bank governors, responded to feverish debate by saying there would be no currency war - and they did not criticise Japan's money printing policies. Continuing in that vein, on Monday Draghi called any language referring to currency wars "really excessive". Still foreign currency experts say Draghi is worried about the strength of the euro against the yen and the dollar, but there is not much he can do about it. While Japan and the United States are pursuing loose monetary policies, the ECB is starting to unwind some of its crisis measures - a contrast has helped drive up the euro. Commodities and Currency Exchange Rate

04:19
http://www.forexconspiracyreport.com/commodities-and-currency-exchange-rate/ Commodities and Currency Exchange Rate By www.ForexConspiracyReport.com According to Bloomberg currencies of commodity exporters are falling as raw material demand from China falls off. Currencies of commodity-exporting nations including Australia fell as a gauge of raw materials slid to a five-year low on speculation demand will drop after China signaled slower economic growth. The Australian dollar sank to a seven-month low against its U.S. counterpart, dropping against most of its 31 major peers. South Africa’s rand and Brazil’s real weakened, and an index of emerging-market currencies reached the lowest level since 2009. Commodities and currency exchange rate are connected because a major source of income for nations like Brazil, South Africa and Australia is selling their raw materials to nations like China. As the Chinese economy slows so do those of their raw material suppliers and commodities and exchange rate are so connected that the real, rand and Aussie dollar are taking a hit as well. Australia Coal Exports and Pollution Control Efforts in China The Sidney Morning Herald notes that there is an Australian export risk due to an impending ban on dirty coal in China. Australian coal exporters are scrambling to clarify the fallout from changes to China's coal import rules, which could expose the industry to billions of dollars in lost sales as China seeks to cut air pollution. The Chinese government is to limit the use of imported coal with more than 16 per cent ash and 3 per cent sulfur from January 1, 2015, in a bid to improve air quality, especially in the major cities such as Beijing and around Shanghai. Apparently the only issue tying commodities and exchange rate for the Aussies is not just a fall off in Chinese manufacturing. Pollution in major Chinese cities has become a big issue and may be a driving force to reduce imports of low quality coal. The net effect for Australia either way will be a reduction in exports and a hit to the AUD. Trading Exporter Currencies The Financial Times reports that the export dip weighs on Australian growth. Australia’s economy slowed in the three months to end of June as a dip in exports cooled growth that had reached its fastest pace in two years during the previous quarter. Official figures on Wednesday showed gross domestic product had risen 0.5 per cent in the second quarter, slightly above analysts’ expectations but below the 1.1 per cent rate recorded three months earlier. Year-on-year growth moderated to 3.1 per cent over the financial year to June 30, against 3.5 per cent on the previous quarter, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. A ten percent fall in economic growth is sufficient to drag down the value of the Aussie dollar because of the connection of commodities and currency exchange rate. Beecroft: The ECB's foreign exchange rate obsession

02:49
http://goo.gl/UQTOFv "I wouldn't be surprised to see an ECB deposit rate of minus one percent", the words of Nick Beecroft, the Chairman of Saxo Capital Markets. He says the European Central Bank is obsessed with the strength of the foreign exchange rate and history tells us the tool of choice to tackle this is a major deposit rate cut; we've seen something similar in Denmark and Switzerland. However, he says there all the tools the ECB has at its disposal have drawbacks and notably, a major cut in the deposit rate can mess up the operation of the inter-bank markets. He also points out that one of the drivers of euro strength isn't going away, and that's the outflow of capital from Russia and associated regions into the single currency, which is perceived as having safe-haven status. A kind of currency war is developing, says Nick.

Global Currency War, Endless Financial Crises: What's Wrong with the International Monetary System?

02:02:42
In the aftermath of the Great Recession and the ongoing debt crisis, all countries want cheaper currencies to promote export growth. This has prompted Brazilian Finance Minister Guido Mantega to sound the alarm about the dangers of a global "currency war." The current system of floating fiat currencies, which followed the collapse of the Bretton Woods agreements in 1971, is now four decades old and has been marked by recurring financial crises and extreme exchange rate volatility. The euro is an attempt to go in the opposite direction, with a fixed exchange rate for a large region, but is itself in crisis. Can the current post-Bretton Woods international monetary system prevent a return to the beggar-thy-neighbor policies and competitive devaluations that so harmed international prosperity in the 1930s? What are the system's flaws? Can they be corrected, and if so, how? An expert panel will address these and related issues. Inside the Chinese Basket: Is China Manipulating the Currency Exchange Rate?

01:29:39
Speaker: Kazuo Yamazaki "Everybody is talking about China. In fact, everybody should be talking about China. According to the Nobel Laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz of Columbia University, China is today experiencing "the most remarkable economic transformation in history." But this "most remarkable economic transformation in history" has come with its cost, and this cost could be huge. Economists such as Morgan Stanley Andy Xie argues that China has been stuck in "macro trap" that disallows itself to freely control its interest rate or the exchange rate, and the hard landing due to the real estate bubble in 2007-08 is very possible. The other side of the picture of China's trade surplus has been the US current account deficit that has reached an unprecedented level of $820 billion in 2005 alone. Policymakers such as Schumer and Graham have been trying to impose tariff rates on the Chinese imports. Now Grassley and Backus are taking actions to put sanctions on the Chinese imports if necessary. John Snow of the US Treasury Department expressed his opinion that China has been manipulating its currency exchange rate for its export advantage. Chinese President Hu Jintao came to Washington to discuss the trade friction issue with President Bush but only left without making much progress. People's Bank of China has recently risen its domestic lending rate by 27 basis point and appreciated RMB below 8RMB-1USD. Yet, the internationally community remains unsatisfied. The world has seen such trade frictions before; during the Great Depression or the rise of Japan in the 1980s. Unfortunately, the world has never witnessed any good result out of these economic conflicts either. For example, economists such as Robert McKinnon of Stanford University points out that one of the main causes of Japan's Lost Decade in Great Deflation was due to the forced appreciation of Japanese Yen in the 1980s. My research combines information from different credible sources, and reaches several conclusions. Some of them are: 1) There has been an economy recycle between the US and China. 2) China does manipulate currency exchange rate, although plenty of countries have done the same in history. 3) People's Bank of China has not raised its rate partially to justify the devalued exchange rate of Chinese currency Rembini. 4) RMB is pegged to the basket with the USD being the dominant force inside the basket. 5) The global imbalance has been expanding in its magnitude day by day, and both China and the US have roles to play."

Webster Tarpley: "There's a currency war!"

06:55
While developing economies such as BRIC continue to grow, can they ever have a say at the IMF and World Bank? As currency wars continue to wage on will the world ever be able to get off the dollar? Webster Tarpley says the US owns 17% of the vote in the IMF; however developing countries are a center of resistance now.
