Teaching Vocabulary to Young Learners Through Brain-Based Teaching Strategies by Setenay Çelik

12:33
Having started with the point that children learn easily and forget quickly, I have been working a lot on how to teach vocabulary to young learners by improving their memory skills. If it comes to memory, it is well worth searching about the brain. Throughout my search, I have found out that as long as the teachers meet the needs of the young brains, it is easier for the learners to remember new vocabulary items. In this presentation I’m planning to share my findings and ten practical brain- based activities that I use in my classes and find really effective. Setenay is from Turkey and she has been teaching English for 8 years including 4 years of teaching when she was a university student. She holds a Masters Degree in English Language Teaching from Gazi University in Ankara, Turkey. Her particular areas of interest are teaching English to young learners and creating new, useful classroom materials and activities.

Supporting English Language Learners in the Preschool Classroom

07:25
Although many preschool classrooms now include children whose first language is not English, teachers may find it challenging to effectively support young children with limited English skills. In e-clip #8, Dr. Ann Anderberg stresses the importance of continuing to support first language development in children, and gives suggestions for assisting these young learners in their acquisition of English. When teachers and parents engage in practices that support oral language development, children can develop strong language skills in both their first and second languages. Teaching English (ESL / EFL) to High Beginners -- Live Action English Materials

38:27
Elizabeth Kuizenga Romijn uses two of her books, Recurrent Action Grammar and Live Action English in an ESL Classroom of high beginners. What is Recurrent Action Grammar? Context and repetition! It is a complete beginning course demonstrating a method of repeating grammar lessons weekly during the semester, each time in a different context, in order to reinforce the grammar as well as the vocabulary of each new lesson. Where does the new vocabulary come from? From lessons (also called action series) in Live Action English. What is Live Action English? A classic that's been around for decades and is used all over the world. This is the first student/teacher book based on James J. Asher's Total Physical Response (TPR). Each page has an illustrated action series of imperatives in a logical order, telling how to do an activity that everyone is familiar with (get up in the morning, chew a piece of gum, iron a shirt, open a present, eat an orange, clean house, take a hike, 75 in all!). Each lesson is basically an excellent vocabulary lesson which teaches the words in a fun context to be acted out in class. Instructions are included for getting students to the point where they can tell each other what to do, one person giving the “instructions” and the other performing each action as it comes. Once they have learned the vocabulary, they are ready to learn to use the words in other contexts and in the future, past, present and present progressive tenses. Check out the clear, detailed instructions in Recurrent Action Grammar to learn how to introduce and practice the future, past, present and present progressive tenses to beginning ESL and EFL students. Can Recurrent Action Grammar be used to teach any language? Yes. It is written in English for teaching English, but can easily be adapted to teach any language. Can Live Action English be used to teach any language? Yes. In fact, it has been published in five other languages: Viva la accion! Live Action Spanish Vive l'action! Live Action French Lernt aktiv! Live Action German Viva l'azione! Live Action italian Iki Iki Nihongo Live Action Japanese All books available at www.cpli.com Thank you for watching.

Family Members Song for Kids! - ESL English Learning Song

06:02
Additional Teaching Resources From Amazon: Family Finger Puppets: http://amzn.to/2zIJ7o1 Family Dollhouse: http://amzn.to/2yjTQRj Things to learn from this video: This song will teach the following family vocabulary words: mother, father, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather, aunt, uncle, cousin, me - - - - - - - - - - - - - How to use in the classroom: This song is a good introduction song to family members. It starts out slow and goes faster and faster. It gives many opportunities for students to lean and review. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Lyrics: This is my great family. Mother, father, me. This is my great family. Mother, father, me. This is my sister. This is my brother. Grandmother, grandfather, aunt, uncle, cousin. This is my great family. Mother, father, me. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Additional Teaching Ideas: 1. For a fun activity, have students think of actions they can do to represent each family member (example: mother could be an action or rocking a baby. Grandfather could be an action of walking with a cane). When the students sing the song, they can act out each action. This gets especially fun at the end of the song when it goes very fast. 2. Pause the video in the middle and point to a family member. Have the students shout out who the family member is. 3. Pause the video in the middle and have a student go to the front of the class. Say a family member and have them point to the correct family member. 4. Have the students practice writing down the names of each family member five times. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Music: This song is to the tune of "Old McDonald." - - - - - - - - - - - - - Visit http://www.superenglishkid.com/ for free games, activities, worksheets, and more English teaching ideas!

AE Webinar 4.2 - Strategies for Engaging Young Learners

58:48
This webinar is part of the "American English” webinar series sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. For more resources to teach and learn English, visit http://americanenglish.state.gov The difficulty in teaching young learners (YLs) in the EFL classroom is maintaining engagement throughout the lesson. Therefore, teachers of YLs need to incorporate activities that are meaningful, engaging, and also entertaining. This webinar will share practical tips and ideas for engaging young learners in the EFL classroom by diving into the usage of fun songs with humor, using actions to accompany poetry and song lyrics, and promoting creativity. We will also focus on techniques for making input comprehensible, such as using gestures, visuals, and realia as learning tools. When using a variety of techniques and activities, children forget they are in a step-by-step language lesson, and the learning comes naturally!
