We all love movie theaters for the special feeling they give with fantastic special effects, complete sound immersion and the taste of popcorn. Would you still love them just as much if you found out their secrets movie theater owners don’t want you to know? We’re going to unveil 10 movie theater secrets. In cinemas, many people can’t always keep their feelings to themselves and that’s normal. For example, a movie about cannibals called Raw appeared to be too hard to watch for a couple of visitors at The Toronto International Film Festival in 2016. The people fainted and one of them hit his head badly during the fall. Digital devices can do everything on their own, and there are more automatic processes at a cinema than there were during the previous century. Keep it in mind that in case there are some problems with a projector (the image is blurred, not centered, etc.), you’ll have to stand up and go notify a staff member in the lobby. 20% of the population, including Johnny Depp himself, simply can’t perceive those three dimensions. Harvard Medical School neurobiology professor Dr. Margaret S. Livingstone explains it could be due to stereo-blindness when eyes can’t see in 3D because of the way they are aligned. If you love cleanliness that much, try to visit the cinema in the morning and avoid going there on Friday and Saturday nights when a lot of other people go out to the movies. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS The biggest part of the profit isn’t earned by ticket sales. 0:49 There’s a lot of piracy. 2:45 A younger audience can watch adult-rated movies. 3:35 Viewers cry, weep, and run out of the hallways. 4:11 Creative ways to sneak in food 5:19 Many people avoid 3D films. 5:57 If there’s something wrong with the picture, the projection booth worker won’t help. 6:58 Cinema halls are full of garbage on weekend nights. 7:38 People often fight at the movies. 8:32 You are being watched! 9:00 SUMMARY -Theaters have to pay a lot to film studios in the first two months of distribution so they have to make their money out of concession. -The cinema staff members who manage to prevent movie theft get a $500 prize. -The younger generations buy a ticket when two movies start simultaneously, and one of them is not R-rated. -A movie about cannibals called Raw appeared to be too hard to watch for a couple of visitors at The Toronto International Film Festival in 2016. The people fainted and one of them hit his head badly during the fall. -One couple stuffed a truckload of food into an infant’s car seat and went to watch a movie. A girl from put some pasta into zip-lock bags and brought them into the cinema with her. -3D glasses give you an illusion of being inside a movie and it drives your visual analyzer crazy. -Even though a movie projector has to be programmed during the day, there’s nobody sitting in the booth when you watch a movie. -A short break between two movies is not enough time for a cinema staff to thoroughly clean up a theater. -Someone who loves to fight will always find a reason to do so. It could be that someone took someone else’s parking place, they talked on the phone during the movie, or someone is chomping too loudly. -Thanks to security cameras, movie theater staff can spot and kick out couples that go too far on their “loveseats”. Many things in movie theaters seem quite strange. For example, the fact that popcorn can be as expensive as your ticket! Let’s explore what movie theaters try to hide from us every single day. TIMESTAMPS The workers do not properly clean the movie halls 0:37 It’s easier for the workers to pick up trash if you place it on the seat, not under it 1:15 High volumes in the movie theater can be dangerous to your hearing 1:46 Until 1981, seats did not have cup holders 2:31 Why does popcorn smell so good? 3:04 The workers kick an amorous couple out of the movie hall at least once a week 3:44 Popcorn prices are unjustly overpriced 4:22 Combo deals will not save you money 5:01 Popcorn is not always sold fresh 5:36 #movietheater #cinemasecrets SUMMARY - Because of tight timings between the movies, all the cleaners can do in that little time is sweep the floors. Sometimes that is done quickly and carelessly. - Of course, the best option is for you to throw it out yourself. If you decided to leave your cup or popcorn box, put it on your seat instead of throwing it on the floor. - Despite the fact that audio system standards and volume level requirements exist, some movie theaters regulate them to suit themselves. Beware of action movies with many bombings and battle scenes, during which the volume usually exceeds the approved level. - By the way, popcorn started being associated with movie watching in the USA during World War Two, when a sugar shortage caused movie theaters to stop selling candy. - There is a reason why we cannot resist the alluring smell of popcorn. Firstly, movie theaters have their secret recipes which help create the incredible scent. For instance, some add a mixture of coconut and canola. - Those who like cuddling, making out, and embarrassing the viewers around them should know that most movie theaters have cameras which capture you in action. - According to several sources of data, 10.5 oz of popcorn costs more than a good quality steak of the same weight. The prices for this beloved movie snack are so overpriced that it would be cheaper to go to a good restaurant instead. - Combo deals consisting of popcorn, soda, and other snacks will not save you money. If you add up the prices of all the components of the deal separately and compare with the combo price, the benefit is not all that big. - If popcorn is not sold out at night, the workers will pack up the leftovers and store it in plastic bags, heating it up and selling it again in the morning. The stars of long-running, mega-hit TV shows can bring home $1 million an episode. Even better: actors get residual paychecks whenever their movie or TV show gets aired (or re-aired) on TV, gets sold to a streaming service like Netflix, is re-released to movie theaters, or even shown on an airplane. That means they get paid again even though they didn't do anything! Production companies use a complicated formula to determine how much actors get paid, and some get more than others. It’s nowhere as straightforward as the early days of cinema when a movie would come out in theaters, make the vast majority of its revenues via ticket sales, and then essentially disappear. Major studios and indie filmmakers alike now spend much of their days looking for new sources of revenue, because ticket sales are no longer the be-all and end-all for films. First, the Budgets In general, major studios don’t disclose the full budgets for their films (production, development, and marketing/advertising). This is in part because it costs far more to make and market a film than it seems. For example, the production budget for Marvel’s "The Avengers" is recorded as $220 million, but if you factor in marketing and advertising costs, that number spikes. (For more, read: What Drives Summer Blockbuster Movie Profits?) Indeed, for many films, the Print & Advertising (P&A) costs alone can be extremely high. A $15 million film (which, interestingly enough, is considered a small budget film in Hollywood) might have a promotional budget that's higher than its production budget. This is because films that don’t have a built-in audience (like those based on bestselling books like “The Hunger Games” or even “50 Shades of Grey”) need to get people into the theater. Romantic comedies or some children's films need to promote themselves via billboards, TV commercials and subway ads, and those costs add up quickly. For a film budgeted between $40 and $75 million, its P&A budget might be over $20 million. For any type of film, whether a blockbuster or an indie production, things like tax incentives and revenues from product placements can help pay down the budget. If they're given an incentive to shoot a film in Canada or Louisiana or Georgia, producers will usually hustle to do so. Going back to the “nobody knows anything” mantra, occasionally there are surprise hits like the indie “Little Miss Sunshine,” which is a Cinderella story when it comes to film finance. Its budget was around $8 million, it sold to distributor Fox Searchlight for $10.5 million at the Sundance Film Festival, and it made $59.89 million in U.S. theaters, which is almost unheard-of for an indie. By contrast, you have the Walt Disney Co. (DIS) movie "John Carter," which had an estimated budget of $250 million, but only made $73 million at the U.S. box office. So there's no sure path for a film to turn a profit since factors like brand awareness, P&A budgets and the desires of a fickle public come into play. Still, there are a few tried and true ways that films can attempt to make money. Ticket Prices Theater attendance has been falling, which makes it even harder for studios and distributors to profit from films. Usually, a portion of theater ticket sales goes to theater owners, with the studio and/or distributor getting the remaining percentage. Traditionally, during the opening weekend of a film, the larger chunk went to the studio, while as the weeks went on, the exhibitor's percentage rose. So a studio might make about 60% of a film's ticket sales in the U.S., and around 20% to 40% than that on overseas ticket sales. The percentage of revenues an exhibitor gets depends on the contract for each film. Many contracts are intended to help a theater hedge against films that flop at the box office by giving theaters a larger cut of ticket sales for such films, so a deal may have the studio getting a smaller percentage of a poorly-performing film and a larger percentage of a hit film's take. (You can see the securities filings for large theater chains to see how much of their ticket revenue goes back to the studios.) Studios and distributors generally make more from domestic revenue than from overseas sales because they get a larger percentage. Still, overseas ticket sales are incredibly important, especially today. It's why you’re seeing more sci-fi, action, and fantasy films, and why superhero movies are such a phenomenon. They’re easy to understand, whether you’re in Malaysia or Montana. It’s much harder for an indie comedy to translate. Merchandising It all started with the “Star Wars.” Since the first George Lucas-helmed movie premiered back in 1977, the franchise has made over $12 billion in revenue from toy licensing alone (for more, read: How Netflix Pays for Movie and TV Show Licensing). In 2015, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" brought in $700 million in retail sales. And global merchandising sales rose by 4.2% to $251.7 billion in 2015 according to a 2016 study by the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers' Association. In 2016, the Star Wars toys were still the top brand, bring in $760 millions in sales.

Have you ever noticed ugly gray bars surrounding a movie screen? How about a dark or blurry picture? It turns out movie theaters aren't doing enough to ensure that their audience is seeing a movie the way it is meant to be seen. Many theaters have little quality control over things like screen masking and projector brightness—and it has begun to hurt the moviegoing experience. We talked with two projection experts to help us understand what is going on inside the booth. Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/sai TI on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/techinsider TI on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tech_insider/ TI on Twitter: https://twitter.com/techinsider INSIDER on Snapchat: https://insder.co/2KJLtVo -------------------------------------------------- Following is the transcript of the video: Narrator: Which looks better? This, or that? Well, what if I told you that you may have been paying a premium to see the worst version. You know those black bars you sometimes see on the top, bottom or sides of a movie? They occur because movies are filmed at different frame sizes, or aspect ratios. "Lady Bird", shot in widescreen should appear differently than "Star Wars", which was shot in Cinemascope. A Cinemascope movie on your TV will have black bars on the top and bottom, while a movie theater masks the frame with retractable curtains. These curtains at Night Hawk Cinema in Brooklyn absorb the light and create a frame around the projected image. But take away the curtains and... Chapin Cutler: When you don't have masking what happens is you've got this gray area of screen which isn't reflecting picture, it's not reflecting the image. It just sort-of sits there and looks ugly. There is a move afoot by some theater circuits, I guess in order to save money, that have decided that, that's a waste of money and they're not gonna do it. Narrator: That's Chapin Cutler. He's been working in the projection and theater business for over 40 years. The empty screen space can be distracting and takes away from the immersive experience of seeing a movie on the big screen. Another problem? Projector brightness, which can be affected by the age and cleanliness of the bulb, along with any dirt or smudges that may be on the window of the projection booth. Some "Solo" attendees reported seeing extremely dark almost unviewable projections with a few saying that they had to struggle to see what was on screen. Chapin Cutler: If the standard that's been established for the amount of light that is supposed to be on the screen isn't there, then not only does the picture look dark but you don't see anything that goes on in the shadows. All of that information disappears. Narrator: And if there was a 3D showing in the theater before a standard 2D showing a lens meant only for 3D movies may still be on the projector making the image two thirds darker than it should be. Joe Muto: Showing something like that with a very low light level is gonna take away from it. If that's the experience you walk away with that's going to impede your positive judgment of the film, and that's just gonna ruin it for you. Narrator: Hurting both the team behind the movie and its viewers, and possibly creating customers who may not come back to that theater for a sub-par experience. The issues aren't limited to "Solo." The past few years have seen numerous reports of theaters not doing enough to ensure quality screenings. Standard 2D movie tickets average about $9.00 in the U.S. And almost twice that in places like New York City. But is the price of admission worth seeing a movie that is not being shown the way it is meant to? You can get a full 4K movie for 15 bucks. Why bother with what may be a questionable theater presentation if you can get cinema-like quality at home? The picture may be bigger, and the sound may be better but if you're having a bad theater experience, take note. If a theater has a dark blurry picture or leaves empty areas of the screen unmasked try a different theater. Many are still working hard to bring you the best picture possible.

In this episode, we go down the rabbit hole of how movies make money and how it affects the independent filmmaker. Welcome to the Film Trooper Podcast, where I try to help filmmakers attain filmmaking freedom as an independent. Why? Because film production is no longer a barrier ... anyone can make a film. Film distribution is no longer a barrier ... anyone can sell their film directly to the world. No. Film marketing is the last barrier, as rising above the noise of the internet is the challenge. And this is one key cornerstone at attaining this filmmaking freedom. By becoming a Film Trooper, filmmakers can learn the skills necessary to adapt and thrive in this new era of filmmaking and internet marketing. Join me, Scott McMahon, as I explore these topics. Past guests have included exclusive interviews with Oren Peli, Creator of "Paranormal Activity", Stephanie Palmer of "Good In A Room", Jason Brubaker of "Filmmaking Stuff", Emily Best of "Seed & Spark", Independent Film Marketing Strategist, Sheri Candler, and Peter Broderick, Indie Film Distribution Expert. —————————————————————————————————————— Get more info at: http://filmtrooper.com/129 —————————————————————————————————————— This episode is sponsored by the book ... By now, most people have heard of MoviePass and their deal of a movie a day in theaters for the price of $9.95 per month. In fact, there are multiple subreddits dedicated to MoviePass. Even elitist moviegoers forego referencing Rotten Tomatoes for movie recommendations now that MoviePass has made the theater experience financially accessible. Users of MoviePass ask about limitations of the subscription service from restrictions on theater locations to whether or not users are allowed to see the same movie twice. There are actually few limitations of service which further poses the question, how does MoviePass make money? Mitch Lowe, CEO of MoviePass, sat down with Senior Correspondent Steve Kovach to discuss the MoviePass business model and the many ways MoviePass turns a profit. Business Insider tells you all you need to know about business, finance, tech, science, retail, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/ BI on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/businessinsider/ BI on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/businessinsider/ BI on Twitter: https://twitter.com/businessinsider -------------------------------------------------- Following is a transcript of the video: Steve Kovach: It's a service that sounds too good to be true. MoviePass, you pay 10 bucks a month, and you can watch pretty much unlimited movies in theaters. You lose money when I see one movie. How does this business model work out for you in the end? Mitch Lowe: I always find it interesting that, to get that question, because, you know, Netflix has to borrow billions of dollars a year to stay in business; to create the content, that they don't earn enough money to pay for. If you read the reports about Spotify, they spent two billion dollars more on content than the revenue they generated. And we're no different. We're building a big subscriber base of film lovers who, over time, we have dozens of ways to make money. For example, marketing on behalf of studios. The film distribution system is completely broken. It's so hard to get a film out in the theater that's not a big blockbuster hit. And there's hundreds of millions of dollars spent marketing those films. We're an incredibly effective partner for those studios. We have people who are coming to our site, you know, four and five times a week where we can sell advertising. And we're on our way to get to break-even on our subscription. Steve Kovach: So right now, just the subscription part, you're essentially break-even, maybe sometimes a little bit profitable. Mitch Lowe: We're not there yet. When you do kind of an all-you-can-eat subscription, the first people who join are people in New York, people who go, "Geez, it's a no-brainer. I'm spending $15 on a ticket. This is $10, I'm gonna save money on my first ticket." Or they're the 11% of moviegoers who already go to 18 films a year. Over time, slowly but surely, you start to acquire more of the casual moviegoers. This is why we priced it at $9.95. So where 89% of film-goers, over 200 million people, only see four movies year. And they spend $40 to $60 a year on movie tickets. When they join MoviePass, now they're spending $120. We're increasing their consumption and they'll do it because it's $9.95 and it's an unlimited value for them. Steve Kovach: So the hope is, it's kind of like the gym membership model, that maybe some of these people won't actually go to as many movies, and they'll, kind of, make up for the people who are going every day. Is that how you're thinking about it? Mitch Lowe: Not quite. What it ends up is, if you look at the distribution between the casual moviegoer who now is going about 10, 11 times a year. That's roughly what, they're spending $9.95 and they're going a little bit less than one a month. They're kind of breaking even on it. And we add all these other values, like special screenings that are only for MoviePass subscribers. We're going to bring back some of the classics into the big screen that, you know, people haven't seen on the big screen ever, that will be exclusive for MoviePass subscribers. Steve Kovach: So you're big pitch, is we have well over two million subscribers now, we should easily get to five by the end of the year, it's just going to grow from there. We're going to juice those numbers a little bit by offering these deals once every few weeks. Then you go to marketers and say, what can we do, how can we work with you? How can you pay us to access these people? Mitch Lowe: Exactly, and our subscribers are so thrilled with the value they are getting, that they're very open to recommendations.

Restaurant guests can grab plate after plate of an endless array of dishes and cuisines. All of this for one low price. So what’s their secret to success? Well, these sorts of buffets have some tricks up their sleeve to keep business rolling, and you’re about to find out exactly what they are! TIMESTAMPS: A strategic layout 2:42 The size of the serving dishes 3:13 Smaller plates and utensils 3:53 A huge food-cost margin 4:38 Computer-monitored food waste 5:15 The “Fill the customer’s belly cheaply” motto 6:08 Buying seasonal and regional ingredients 6:37 Profitable drinks 7:25 Eliminating labor costs 7:57 Charging higher prices for higher quality 8:37 Banning people 9:20 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY: - At the start of the line, the first thing you see is carb-rich foods, like fried rice. The line starts with these dishes because they have the cheapest ingredients but still do the job of filling up your belly. - Besides the layout, they also control the size of the serving dishes. Cheap starches and veggies are in big heaping trays with more jumbo-sized serving spoons. - Buffets don’t limit this size control to the serving dishes; they also effectively monitor the size of the plates and eating utensils. They provide smaller-than-average dinner plates and tiny dessert bowls. - The price the restaurant pays for the food or ingredients is just 30-35% of the price guests pay for a meal. A super-diner doesn’t burn a hole in a buffet’s budget simply because they have such a huge food-cost margin! - They use sophisticated computer software to monitor food waste. This way, they can track everything from the weekly waste amounts, to how much is consumed daily, to what dishes are most popular for the diners depending on the day of the week or the season. - They have a flexible menu designed towards cheap dishes. Vegetables and meat are bought in bulk and at a cheaper price, but they’re still high-quality and versatile. - If an ingredient (for example, tomatoes) is in season, it’s a lot cheaper than usual, so a buffet can buy it in bulk. They also take advantage of locally-sourced foods or ingredients because they tend to be cheaper. - Drinks aren’t included in the price of the buffet and don’t fall into the same 30% food-cost markup. Instead, they sell it at up to a 90% profit margin. - They don’t need to hire waiters to serve food because diners get their own drinks and plates. - Believe it or not, diners can get banned for overeating. Kristen and Juston Herbert are bringing in the cash by buying popular products at low prices and selling them at higher costs, and they're getting rich doing it. "We'll clear $1 million in sales this year," Kristen told Inside Edition. The couple say they are reselling dish soap at four times its price at the dollar store. And they say they're getting 10 times as much money for a seasonal autumn air freshener spray.

Don't get me wrong I love the straight to dvd DC universe movies and hope they never end. But what about live action movies, they can't be cheap. How do they plan to make that money back?
