Clearing up confusion - 47 - English at Work keeps things clear!

06:28
With Paul still out of action following his biscuit-related accident Anna is taking charge at Tip Top Trading. What will she do when she and Tom discover a mysterious note in Paul's office – and how will she stop rumours flying round the office? For more English at Work and other great content:: http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/features/english-at-work TRANSCRIPT Narrator Welcome back to English at Work. Anna is acting up as boss because Paul had an accident with a biscuit! But her and Tom are in a panic after finding a note in Paul's diary that said 'Socrates, IPC, final'. Could it mean bad news for Tip Top Trading? Let’s find out. Tom It's very odd and it can't be good. But Socrates must mean Mr Socrates. Anna Yes – but IPC? What's that mean? Tom Yeah and final sounds very… final. Hmm… I've got it! IPC – it must be code for imminent post closures – they're going to sack us all! Anna Sshh. Keep your voice down. Don't tell everyone. Let's check things out first, don't say anything yet. OK? Tom OK. Mum's the word. Anna Your mum knows?! Tom No, no, no, it's our little secret. See you later. Denise Everything OK Tom? Tom Oh yeah, everything's cool. Actually Denise, it's not. I think we're all going to be sacked tomorrow by Mr Socrates. Denise What?! No! I've got a hairdresser's appointment on Saturday, how am I going to pay for it now? What am I going to do? I know, I'll call Marge. Tom Hey Brian, Pete… we're all going to be sacked tomorrow. Narrator Erm… Anna, you've got a problem brewing. Anna What? Narrator Tom's spreading rumours about job cuts. Everyone's starting to panic. Anna Oh no! I'd better do something but what shall I say? Narrator Call a meeting quickly. Tell the team 'there are some rumours going around that are not true'. Say, 'I am trying to establish the facts and I will let you know as soon as I have some information'. You could say 'I would be grateful if you hear any rumours, not to pass them on'. This can be a tricky situation and you need to handle it well. Good luck! Anna Gosh. This is hard but here goes. Excuse me, could everyone gather round please. Denise Is this about the sackings? Anna No Denise. Any rumours about sackings are not true. Tom Yeah that's right. Who told you that Denise? Denise Hmmm… Anna Please don't listen to rumours. I am trying to establish the facts and if I get any information I will let you know straight away. Denise But I heard Mr Socrates is coming tomorrow, surely he’s going to sack us. Anna Ignore the rumours and please don't pass them on. Narrator Anna. Tell them to carry on with their work as normal. Anna Right, yes. Could you please just carry on with your work as normal. Thank you. Tom So Anna, how are you going to find out the facts? Anna I'm going to have to call Paul – in private Tom – I don't want any more rumours getting out. Tom Oh yeah, absolutely. You need to establish the facts right? Paul Hello, Paul speaking. Anna Oh hi Paul. It's Anna. Sorry to bother you. Are you feeling better? Paul Much better thanks but keeping clear of biscuits for a while! Anyway, is everything OK? Anna Not exactly. There are rumours spreading about job cuts. Tom saw a note in your diary for tomorrow that said 'Socrates, IPC'. Paul Hmm. Really? Oh yes. I mean, oh no! It's not job cuts – it's IPC - the International Plastics Conference tomorrow! And Mr Socrates is flying in for it. Oh golly gosh, I'd forgotten about that. Anna I see. And why did you right final? Paul Because there's an award being given for the Best Plastic Innovation – and we're in the final with our Imperial Lemon. It was a reminder to me to write an acceptance speech. Oh golly gosh, I haven't written a thing. Anna Oh dear. What are we going to do? Narrator What are you going to do indeed? But thank goodness those rumours of job cuts are not true. Tomorrow could actually be a good day for Tip Top Trading. Here's a reminder of the phrases Anna used to try and control the spread of some office rumours: There are some rumours going around that are not true. Please don't listen to rumours. I am trying to establish the facts and if I get any information I will let you know straight away. Ignore the rumours and please don’t pass them on. Please just carry on with your work as normal. Thank you. Narrator Tomorrow is going to be an important day at the International Plastics Conference. Mr Socrates will be there and Tip Top Trading could pick up a prestigious prize but who’s going to write the acceptance speech? Paul OK Anna, this calls for some urgent action. I want you and Tom to meet me at the Princess Diana Conference Centre tomorrow at 9.00. Anna Right. And what about the speech? Paul Well, I've got quite a lot on my plate so I was wondering if you could give it a go… please? Anna Me?! I've never done it before. What am I going to say?! Narrator Don't worry Anna. We’re here to help. Join us again soon for some more English at Work. Bye!

Delivering bad news – 27 – English at Work gives you the bad news

05:34
For more English at Work and other great content:: http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/features/english-at-work TRANSCRIPT Narrator: Hello again. It’s the big day and Mr Socrates is about to arrive at the offices of Tip Top Trading to talk officially to the team. What is he going to say? And more importantly, will he get his freshly squeezed orange juice? Tom: Quickly everybody… he’s coming out of the lift with Paul. Denise: Anna quickly, get a glass of orange juice ready. Paul: …and if we come through this door here we get to the office and… morning everyone. I’m sure we’ve all met Mr Socrates on the day of the… fire… but today everything is a bit calmer and well he’s here to say hello. Mr S: Hi! Denise: Biscuit Mr Socrates? Mr S: Biscuit? You mean a goddamn cookie. Thanks. Anna: Err, Mr Socrates, I’m Anna. Would you like some orange juice – freshly squeezed? Mr S: You betcha as long as it’s made from Florida oranges. Hey… Anna? Ain’t you the girl who booked my hotel room? Anna: Oh yes, sorry about the bed and… Mr S: Hey, you got me a new room, it was great. You did a good job there. Well done. Anna: Oh thanks. Tom: Hello. It’s Tom. I recommended the hotel, it was a… Paul: Tom. Everyone, shall we gather round and hear what Mr Socrates has to say? Please. Mr S: Hey… errr, what’s your name… Paul: Paul. Mr S: Yeah you. Don’t you think I should be sitting in the big chair? Paul: Sorry. Yes of course. (Shuffling) There you go. Mr S: Now. Tip Top Trading. I gotta give it to you straight. Things ain’t looking good, in fact the outlook is gloomy. The global recession has led to a meltdown in the plastic fruits sector. And I’ve got to announce a profit warning. We just ain’t selling enough of these bananas, oranges and lemons to make any money. Paul: There’s a bit of an economic squeeze on lemons! Mr S: What?! Anna: (To herself) Oh dear. I’m not sure what he’s talking about but it sounds bad. Narrator: It is Anna. He’s delivering some bad news without hiding the truth. That’s why he said “I’ve got to give it to you straight”. He said “the outlook is gloomy” which it means the future doesn’t look good. And he mentioned a “profit warning”, which means company profits are probably going to go down. Anna: Crikey! That is bad. What does it mean? Narrator: Just keep listening for now. Mr S: …so, this calls for action. I’m going to have to… Tom: (interrupts) Oh no, not me Mr Socrates, I’ve been a loyal employee, I couldn’t face being unemployed. Denise: Tom, calm down. Mr S: I’m not talking about redundancies yet. Paul: Gosh, well that calls for another biscuit. Mr S: My plan is… we’re going into Europe. Anna: You mean we’re moving to Europe? Paul: No, no Anna. I think he means we’re going to sell plastic fruit to the European market. Tom: Oh right! Great. Mr Socrates, I’ve lots of experience with Europe. I had a holiday in Spain once… twice actually. Denise: Well we’ll have to make sure our phones can make international calls. Mr S: Hmm. I think you’re gonna need some help with this, so I’m bringing in my best marketing executive, Rachel. What she doesn’t know about selling to Europe, you don’t wanna know. She’ll be here in a few weeks’ time. Denise: Do you know if she prefers tea or coffee… or orange juice perhaps? Mr S: Look Diana… Denise: Denise… Mr S: Denise. Like Dennis right? She’ll want the best – the best tea, coffee, the best team. I’ll expect improved results and profits. If not your necks will be on the line – especially yours Paul. Paul: (nervously) Oh, chop chop. We’d better get to work. Narrator: Scary! “Your necks will be on the line” – he means their jobs will be at risk if things don’t improve. It’s a worrying time for Tip Top Trading. Let’s remind ourselves of the phrases Mr Socrates used to deliver bad news: I’ve got to give it to you straight The outlook is gloomy I’ve got to announce a profit warning Let’s hope this new marketing strategy for Europe is going to work. How are you feeling Anna? Anna: A little nervous. But I’m going to try my best to make sure this new strategy works. Narrator: That’s the spirit Anna! Paul: Right everyone. I think we need to take Mr Socrates down to the Rose and Crown after work for a pint or two and show him some true English hospitality. How about it? Mr S: I don’t drink. Paul: Ah well, perhaps some lemonade? Narrator: Oh dear. This should be interesting. Until next time, bye!

CDM beneficiaries from Bangladesh, Colombia, Guatemala and South Africa travelled to Brussels on 1 March 2012 to meet with European MEPs and explain the benefits that the mechanism has brought to their lives. The event, which was organized by the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) in collaboration with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), was held on 1 March 2012 at the European Parliament. The "Meet the Beneficiaries" event gave a voice to local spokespeople to explain their experience with the CDM. Diana Darke: "My House in Damascus" | Talks at Google

50:43
Talks at Google was delighted to welcome Middle East cultural expert Diana Darke, author of My House in Damascus: An Inside View of the Syrian Crisis, for a timely talk on this essential subject. Recorded in London, February 2017. ** About the book ** Based on decades of living and working in Syria, My House in Damascus offers an inside view of Syria’s cultural and complex religious and ethnic communities. Diana Darke, a fluent Arabic speaker who moved to Damascus in 2004 after decades of regular visits, details the ways that the Assad regime, and its relationship to the people, differs from the regimes in Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya--and why it was thus always less likely to collapse quickly, even in the face of widespread unrest and violence. Through the author’s firsthand experiences of buying and restoring a house in the old city of Damascus, which she later offered as a sanctuary to friends, Darke presents a clear picture of the realities of life on the ground and what hope there is for Syria’s future. ** About the author ** Diana Darke is a fluent Arabic speaker and has specialized in the Middle East for over 30 years. The owner of an old courtyard house within the walls of Old Damascus, she is well known as an authority on Syria and has written for the Sunday Times, the Daily Telegraph, the Guardian, the Financial Times and the BBC. Diana Darke is the author of several guides to Syria and Eastern Turkey.

🇱🇾 Migrants for Sale: Slave trade in Libya | Counting the Cost

09:32
Mahmoud Abdelwahed reports from a detention centre in the Libyan capital Tripoli. Leonard Doyle from the International Organization for Migration joins Counting the Cost to discuss Libya's modern-day slavery. The UN-backed government in Libya said it's looking into allegations that African migrants are being sold at 'slave markets' in Libya. According to reports, the trade works by preying on the tens of thousands of vulnerable people who risk everything on what's been described as the deadliest route on earth. They use smartphones to connect with people smugglers to get them to the coast in the hope that they can cross the Mediterranean into Europe. There is no proper registration process for the tens of thousands of refugees arriving in Libya. According to reports, the business of detention centres is unsupervised in some parts of the country and stories of torture, rape and forced labour have emerged. When the centres get too crowded, people are then allegedly sold off like goods in an open market. The International Organization for Migration says trade in humans has become so normalised that people are being bought and sold in public for as little as $400. "As shocking as it seems, it's indeed true. And the reason it [slave trade] can happen is because there is really no rule of law across much of Libya. Libya is a country as big as France, with a lot of space there. Migrants are coming there.... they see the promise of a new life when they go to their Facebook feed and they think something wonderful is waiting for them in Europe, because a smuggler has abused the system and has sold them that lie," says Doyle. "They get off the bus when they arrive in Libya and they are quickly put into a kind of murder machine, an extortion machine. They are robbed of their possessions, their families are called. They are forced, they are tortured, they give them money. And then they are sold. Unbelievable, but they are sold in open, public auctions: $400 for a labouring man, maybe a bit more for a women who can be put in the sex trade. And this is what's happening across the country." #AlJazeeraEnglish #LibyanSlaveTrade - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/

Video Of Modern Day Slave Auction In Libya

10:10
A video appears to show a modern-day slave auction in Libya. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola, the hosts of The Young Turks, discuss the video. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. Read more here: http://www.cnn.com/2017/11/29/africa/nigeria-migrants-returned-libya/index.html “Lagos, Nigeria (CNN)More than 200 Nigerian migrants stranded in Libya have been returned to their home country, Nigerian officials said. The 242 migrants landed at Lagos airport on a Libyan Airlines flight at around 9:00 pm local time (3:00pm ET) on Tuesday. Among them were women carrying children and at least one man in a wheelchair. Nigerian authorities say they worked on returning the migrants from Libya in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Some of the 242 men and women who returned had been in Libyan detention camps while others willingly approached the Nigerian embassy in Libya to return home because of hardship there, authorities said. Abike Dabiri, senior special adviser on foreign and diaspora affairs to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, said the government there had been working with the IOM, the Nigerian National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) and other local agencies to bring Nigerians back home. Dabiri told CNN that around 5,000 Nigerians have come back from Libya in the past year. UK: CONTROVERSIES SURROUNDING THE DIANA MEMORIAL FUND

04:01
English/Nat One of the immediate consequences of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, was the instinctive reaction of many thousands of people to send money to Kensington Palace within hours of the announcement of her death. The Diana Memorial Fund was hurriedly created to look after the (m) millions of pounds pouring in. Last April, Dr Andrew Purkis was chosen to look after the Fund following months of damaging criticism about the way it was being run. With the anniversary of the Princess's death approaching, he spoke to APTV about the controversies surrounding one of the most famous charities in the world. The man charged with deciding how to spend 70 (m) million pounds (about 113 million U-S dollars) of donations in Diana's memory was plucked from the office of the Archbishop of Canterbury - where he was the spokesman for the Church of England's most senior figure. Dr Andrew Purkis walked straight into a furious row. There was widespread condemnation of a sponsorship venture which saw British supermarkets selling tubs of margarine bearing Princess Diana's name. The use of the Fund's official logo on margarine tubs to promote the London Marathon provoked accusations that it was prepared to plumb any depths in order to raise money. Dr Purkis feels this was a mistake that must never be repeated. SOUNDBITE: "You have to use that personalised signature with very great care. It is the logo of the Memorial Fund and it needs to look like a logo. If people think that you are using the personalised signature as such, to promote a mundane product, you will get a very vigorous reaction. I believe we've put all that far behind us now and it will never happen again." SUPER CAPTION: Dr Andrew Purkis, Chief Executive Officer, Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund The margarine tub idea was the brainchild of Princess Diana's former butler, Paul Burrell. He attained international recognition in the aftermath of the accident - toasted in Hollywood and attending glittering parties in London in her memory. But his image was tarnished by the margarine deal. And when Dr Purkis stepped into the breach, it was widely rumoured he was to be dropped - or at the very least sidelined as a trustee of the Fund. Burrell may not have been pushed, but Dr Purkis makes it clear where in the decision-making process authority now firmly lies. SOUNDBITE: "I mean obviously as you'd expect, he has a boss - namely me - and we discuss things together but there's no question of his being sidelined. He has great gifts to offer and he is a very valuable member of the team." SUPER CAPTION: Dr Andrew Purkis, Chief Executive Officer, Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund The Fund has bitterly divided many of those close to Princess Diana. One of the most outspoken critics was her brother. Earl Spencer made plain in media leaks that he felt it should not only stop trading on his sister's name to raise money through selling products, but that it should close down altogether. Dr Purkis says all that has now changed. In fact, he claims the Earl - who has opened his family home to the public in Diana's memory - is now one of the Fund's strongest supporters. SOUNDBITE: "I have talked with him personally and had quite long telephone conversations and I'm clear that he is a supporter of the Fund, indeed he has made very generous arrangements for the Fund to receive the profits from the opening of Althorp." SUPER CAPTION: Dr Andrew Purkis, Chief Executive Officer, Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund The Fund continues to receive donations from the public, though nothing like in the same amount as in the immediate aftermath of Diana's death. Childhood Toys Now Worth A Fortune

12:42
Check out these childhood toys now worth a fortune! This top 10 list of expensive toys like hot wheels, gameboy and tamagotchi are now super valuable and sell for a lot of money on ebay! Subscribe For New Videos! https://goo.gl/jhvhXL Check out our "Weirdest Houses In The World" video here: https://youtu.be/p24SNNRv1V4 Check out our "Most AMAZING Facts About Cats" video here: https://youtu.be/tIFGsgrq3-k Check out our "Most Mysterious Things Found In the Ocean" video here: https://youtu.be/wFe4WCZRZsw 11. Original Gameboy Released in Japan in 1989, the Game Boy was designed by Nintendo engineer Gunpei Yokoi, who previously worked on the company’s Game & Watch handheld LCD games. The handheld console cost $97, which is nothing compared to modern consoles, and it sold 300,000 units in two weeks. That was a mere prelude to its later international success. To this day, that grey brick remains in the hearts of game players worldwide. Today, an original Gameboy can fetch $700. The interest in original Gameboys spiked the same time interest in Pokemon Go spiked. Nintendo has often been associated with the Pokemon video game, however Nintendo is getting the last laugh. Pokemon Go isn’t even owned by Nintendo but by another company. 10. 1970s Star Wars Action Figures Since Star Wars is a current phenomenon, it’s easy to forget that it all started in the 1970s and was huge even then. For several months after the film’s debut, toy companies made limited Star Wars merchandise available. One company responded to the sudden demand for toys by selling boxed vouchers in its "empty box" Christmas 1977 campaign. Television commercials told children and parents that vouchers within a "Star Wars Early Bird Certificate Package" could be redeemed for toys "between February 1st and June 1st" of 1978. In 2015, a collector auctioned off his memorabilia through Sotheby. One of his Star Wars action figures sold for $25,000, though the news report doesn’t say which figure it was. A Luke Skywalker figure with telescoping lightsaber or Han Solo with his blaster could easily go for at least $1,000. However, Boba Fett, that mysterious bounty hunter who only appeared as a supporting character, can sell for twice as much. The most valuable action figure isn’t who you would expect, though. A vinyl cape Jawa can fetch $18,000 or more. This is due to only very few being made. 9. Beanie Babies Ty started selling Beanie Babies in 1993. Sales were doing all right but nothing phenomenal. However, a group of friends in Chicago began trading them and the media caught wind of it. The New York Times reported on articles and TV segments about parents trading a five dollar toy for thousands of dollars. One of the early traders, Peggy Gallagher bought a box of the stuffed animals in Germany for $2,000 but they were $300,000 in the US. What really kicked the Beanie Baby mania in high gear, however, was the rise of eBay. In the early ‘90s, ten percent of eBay’s sales involved Beanie Babies. The craze turned Ty into the first billion-dollar plush company. First generation Beanie Babies are worth the most money but a Princess bear, created in honor of Princess Diana, sold in the UK for $90,000! If you have a Beanie Baby, you should keep one thing in mind: if the heart-shaped tag in the ear is removed, the toy loses its value by 50 percent. 8. Garbage Pail Kids When Cabbage Patch Kids came onto the scene in the 1980s, the TOPPS Company wanted to get a license to depict Cabbage Patch Kids on trading cards. However, they weren’t able to obtain a license cheaply and decided, instead, to make a parody and Garbage Pail Kids was born. The idea was to create something not as benign as Cabbage Patch Kids and much more provocative. Some of these gross-looking cards sell at a high price on eBay. One Adam Bomb card sold on the auction site for $4,250! But it’s the international cards that are rare, especially the early test cards. For collectors, the most sought after set are the Japanese GPK cards, called the Bukimi Kun. Four single cards, with their wrapper, sold for $1,592.89 on eBay in February 2012. Apparently, the key is to have the wrapper, in excellent condition. Misprints and cards with mistakes are also highly sought. 7. PEZ Dispensers Pez was originally invented in Austria in 1927, but the company's only factory and headquarters are located in Orange, Connecticut. The Haas family own the company and it really is the family business: they’re descended from the PEZ candy inventor, Eduard Has III. He invented it in a peppermint flavor to encourage his fellow Austrians to quit smoking. The campaign was actually very successful and when it came to America, it was for the same purpose. However, it didn’t have the same effect but the candy still remained popular. All the PEZ distributed worldwide comes from the one factory in Orange. It produces 12 million tables every day and uses up to 50,000 pounds of sugar to do it.
