This lesson introduces the factors that can cause demand for a resource to change and explains how the market demand for a resource is the sum of all the demands of the individual firms hiring that resource. Learning styles & the importance of critical self-reflection | Tesia Marshik | TEDxUWLaCrosse

18:15
The belief in learning styles is so widespread, it is considered to be common sense. Few people ever challenge this belief, which has been deeply ingrained in our educational system. Teachers are routinely told that in order to be effective educators, they must identify & cater to individual students' learning styles; it is estimated that around 90% of students believe that they have a specific learning style but research suggests that learning styles don't actually exist! This presentation focuses on debunking this myth via research findings, explaining how/why the belief in learning styles is problematic, and examining the reasons why the belief persists despite the lack of evidence. Dr. Tesia Marshik is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Her research interests in educational psychology include student motivation, self-regulation, and teacher-student relationships. Why Can't I Lose Weight For Men Over 40 (4 Keys Of Weight Loss)

In order to do that, all you need is 4 key principles that I’m going to share with you right here. The first is not something you’d expect, but it is by far the most important thing when it comes to battling the bulge and losing weight in your 40’s. *Key #1 – Make Sleep A Priority (1:11) If you’re not getting at least 7 hours of sleep each night, it’s very possible that any weight you’re losing is coming from muscle tissue instead of fat. It has been proven that people who struggle to sleep or sleep poorly have a harder time losing weight than those that do sleep well. Sleep is also responsible for resetting your hormone balance, which controls hunger, stress, and appetite. *Key #2 – Nutrition & Diet (2:20) Those that ask “Why can't I lose weight for men?” often head straight for a diet plan as their first port of call, and for a very good reason. Besides sleep, this principle is one of the most effective things for helping you lose weight. ‘Weight loss starts in the kitchen’ and is often responsible for about 70-80% of your results. Tightening up on your diet plan and understanding where you can improve will be so important. You can get my FREE 1-Day Meal Plan at → http://www.fitfatherproject.com/get-free-meal-plan *Key #3 – Do High Intensity (HIIT) Cardio (5:07) The next of our 4 key principles to answer “Why can’t I lose weight at 40?”, is to transition yourself away from long duration steady-state cardio and use high-intensity interval training. This can be done by simply doing 1-minute at a high intensity and then 1-minute at a lower intensity. The high intensity could be a fast run, a high level, or an incline, depending on what exercise you’re doing. *Key #4 – Do Strength Training (6:11) Next up is adding strength training into your ‘why can’t I lose weight after 40’ workout plan. A lot of guys think that strength training is for the ‘gym bro’s’ that want to pack on muscle and get huge… BUT, it’s very important for weight loss too, as increased muscle tissue means a faster metabolism and more fat burning even at times of rest. To help combine high-intensity cardio and strength training, I put together a FREE 24-Minute Workout that you can find at → http://www.fitfatherproject.com/get-free-workout I hope those 4 key principles help answer the question “Why can’t I lose weight over 40”! What is INDIVIDUAL RECLAMATION? What does INDIVIDUAL RECLAMATION mean?

02:49
What is INDIVIDUAL RECLAMATION? What does INDIVIDUAL RECLAMATION mean? INDIVIDUAL RECLAMATION meaning - INDIVIDUAL RECLAMATION definition - INDIVIDUAL RECLAMATION explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Individual reclamation (French: reprise individuelle) is a form of direct action, characterized by the individual theft of resources from the rich by the poor. Individual reclamation gained popular attention in the early 20th century as a result of the exploits of anarchists and outsiders such as Ravachol and Clément Duval who believed that such expropriations were ethical because of the exploitation of society by capitalists (see Anti-capitalism). Advocacy centered on France, Belgium, Great Britain and Switzerland. In 1840, Pierre Joseph Proudhon, a French anarchist, wrote What Is Property?, a question to which he famously answered "property is theft". By this, Proudhon meant that legitimate private property could result only from an individual's labor and all other capital was, in effect, stolen. This economic world view converged in the minds of radicals with the Russian theorist Mikhail Bakunin's concept of propaganda of the deed, the use of physical violence against political enemies as a method of inspiring the masses. A marginal sector of European individualist anarchism derived the idea of individual reclamation as a means of breaking down what they perceived as the robbery of the laboring class by capitalists, politicians and the church. The individual's expropriation was regarded as legitimate resistance against an unfair social order, an ethical right to even the distribution of wealth. Well-known 19th century practitioners of individual reclamation included Ravachol and Clément Duval. A later generation of European anarchists, influenced by the anti-essentialism of Max Stirner, would eventually abandon the ethical framing of individual reclamation, proposing an ideology of illegalism and openly embracing criminality as a lifestyle. The most famous of these practitioners included the infamous Bonnot Gang of France. In the 20th century, Lucio Urtubia, a Spanish practitioner of individual reclamation, stole millions from Citibank by forging traveler's checks. Between 1993 and 2007, Jaime Giménez Arbe robbed 36 banks in Spain, stealing more than €700,000 euros in what he described as an effort "to liberate the Spanish people" from the banking sector.

Labor Markets and Minimum Wage: Crash Course Economics #28

10:38
How much should you get paid for your job? Well, that depends on a lot of factors. Your skill set, the demand for the skills you have, and what other people are getting paid around you all factor in. In a lot of ways, labor markets work on supply and demand, just like many of the markets we talk about in Crash Course Econ. But, again, there aren't a lot of pure, true markets in the world. There are all kinds of oddities and regulations that change the way labor markets work. One common (and kind of controversial one) is the minimum wage. The minimum wage has potential upsides and downsides, and we'll take a look at the various arguments for an against it. Crash Course is on Patreon! What is Economics?

02:55
http://economicsdetective.com/ The typical first-year student walks into his first economics class with very little idea of what economics is. He might have heard something like, "economics is the study of money", or "economics is another word for accounting", or "economics is hard, don't take that class", but none of those are true. "Economics is the study of the use of scarce resources that have alternative uses." That's the classic definition of economics. Basically, there are people, and people need resources to fulfil their desires. These resources cannot be infinite, but the desires can be, so people need to make choices about how to use their scarce resources. Economists study these choices. All economic questions fall into one of two categories: positive and normative. Positive economics describes "what is" and normative economics argues for what ought to be, so a question like, "why do people use money?" is a positive question and "should people use money?" is a normative question. A general rule of thumb is that if your economic model has no value judgements, it's positive economics, and if it does have value judgements it's normative economics, since to tell someone what he ought to do, you first have to judge what is best for him. Economics is also divided into microeconomics and macroeconomics. Microeconomics studies the behaviour of individual agents and markets, while macroeconomics studies the behaviour of the entire economy. Economists also have their own branch of statistics called "econometrics" that's specialized to analyzing economic data. Since economic data usually comes from the real world, and not from controlled experiments, econometrics faces mathematical challenges that other fields might not. The tools economists have developed to study human behaviour have broad uses outside of what we would traditionally consider economics. Economists study not only markets, but things like crime, war, the family, religion, culture, politics, law, and even genetics. That's why it's not unusual to see papers by psychologists, sociologists, criminologists, political scientists, anthropologists, biologists, neuroscientists, or legal scholars being co-authored by economists.

Neoliberalism: Individual Responsibility

06:19
I'm Dr. Nicholas Herriman, lecturer in anthropology at La Trobe University. This presentation is looks at one aspect of neoliberalism. It is intended for anthropology undergrads. Many accounts focus on neoliberalism as set of economic policies (for minimal state intervention in the market) with predictable effects. Anthropologists use the concept of "neoliberalism" differently. For anthropologists, "neoliberalism" implies that people are individuals, who only need to be armed with sufficient information and resources, to make correct and efficient choices in their lives. Anthropologists generally believe that certain political, economic, etc. structures make free choices limited, to say the least. Anthropologists also question whether efficiency is a true marker of value. For the previous presentation, go to: https://www.youtube.com/edit?video_id... Global collaboration lies at the heart of scientific discoveries. Since its founding in 1954, CERN's prime aim is to pool European resources for frontier research which would be beyond the means of individual countries. Given its excellent record in the past and present, what does the future hold for CERN? The process of collaboration building is not finished yet, and many challenges remain as we start preparing the post-LHC future.

Why you should make useless things | Simone Giertz

11:58
In this joyful, heartfelt talk featuring demos of her wonderfully wacky creations, Simone Giertz shares her craft: making useless robots. Her inventions -- designed to chop vegetables, cut hair, apply lipstick and more -- rarely (if ever) succeed, and that's the point. "The true beauty of making useless things [is] this acknowledgment that you don't always know what the best answer is," Giertz says. "It turns off that voice in your head that tells you that you know exactly how the world works. Maybe a toothbrush helmet isn't the answer, but at least you're asking the question." Infinite worksheet - Number Gym - TES Maths Resource of the Week

05:32
What is it? Regular readers of the Resource of the Week feature will know I am a bit of a sucker for a fancy use of Excel, and once again I have been hooked in. The fact that Excel can be programmed - assuming you know how! - to make use of random numbers in calculations means that essentially you can generate an infinite number of questions. And this resource exploits that beautifully. Here we have 20 number-based questions covering a range of topics, including the four operations, fractions, rounding and powers, and hitting F9 produces a completely different set. And if that wasn’t enough, the answers are also there too! How can it be used? There are three ways I will be using this resource: 1. A whole class starter - simply project the set of 20 questions up, and set the students away. A diet of these questions once or twice a week keeps all those key numbers skills ticking over 2. Individual low-stakes quizzes - the author explains that he created this resource to prevent students copying off each other. Indeed, if you scroll down the Excel sheet you will see that there are in fact 32 sets of the 20 questions, all completely different. So, if you click “print” you get 32 personalised quizzes which can be given out to students. Alternatively, I have found that printing out 4 different quizzes, and ensuring every group of four students has a different quiz, works really well. Once students have completed their own quiz, they can then be encouraged to check each other’s work, comparing similar questions. 3. Independent study - emailing this Excel document home, or putting it on the school VLE means that students can benefit from this all important practice whenever they like. Thanks so much for sharing Craig Barton To access the resource and join in the discussion, or to view all the other Maths Resources of the Week in this series, just visit https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/blog/maths

Does Individual Liberty Threaten Community? | Learn Liberty

03:20
Libertarianism Explained: Does individual liberty threaten community? Some think that it does. Learn More: https://www.learnliberty.org/ As philosophy professor James Otteson explains, some worry that individual liberty undermines moral community, while others worry that it neglects those most vulnerable in a community, such as the poor. But Otteson cautions against thinking this way, for several reasons. As he explains, to take away individual liberty is to take away freedom of association, which interferes not only with autonomy, but with the actual creation of robust and meaningful communities. While freedom of association means that some people will make choices we don't like, and that some communities will decline over time, it also allows for the creation of new and different communities which evolve as their members freely choose to be a part of them. Sathi Sanga Manka Kura | 16 September 2018

44:10
Sathi Sanga Manka Kura | 16 September 2018 A social issue is a problem that influences a considerable number of the individuals within a society. It is often the consequence of factors extending beyond an individual's social issue is the source of a conflicting opinion on the grounds of what is perceived as a morally just personal life or societal order. Social issues are distinguished from economic issues; however, some issues (such as immigration) have both social and economic aspects. There are also issues that don't fall into either category, such as warfare. There can be disagreements about what social issues are worth solving, or which should take precedence. Different individuals and different societies have different perceptions. In Rights of Man and Common Sense, Thomas Paine addresses individual's duty to "allow the same rights to others as we allow ourselves". The failure to do so caused the birth of a social issue. There are a variety of methods people use to combat social issues. Some people vote for leaders in a democracy to advance their ideals. Outside the political process, people donate or share their time, money, energy, or other resources. This often takes the form of volunteering. Nonprofit organizations are often formed for the sole purpose of solving a social issue. community organizing involves gathering people together for a common purpose. Personal issues are those that individuals deal with themselves and within a small range of their peers and relationships. On the other hand, social issues involve values cherished by widespread society. For example, a high unemployment rate that affects millions of people is a social issue. The line between a personal issue and a public issue may be subjective and depends on how groups are defined. However, when a large enough sector of society is affected by an issue, it becomes a social issue. Returning to the unemployment issue, while one person losing their job is a personal and not a social issue, firing 13 million people is likely to generate a variety of social issues. Teaching art or teaching to think like an artist? | Cindy Foley | TEDxColumbus

14:40
What is the purpose and value of Art education in the 21st Century? Foley makes the case the Art’s critical value is to develop learners that think like Artists which means learners who are creative, curious, that seek questions, develop ideas, and play. For that to happen society will need to stop the pervasive, problematic and cliché messaging that implies that creativity is somehow defined as artistic skill. This shift in perception will give educators the courage to teach for creativity, by focusing on three critical habits that artist employ, 1. Comfort with Ambiguity, 2. Idea Generation, and 3. Transdisciplinary Research. This change can make way for Center’s for Creativity in our schools and museums where ideas are king and curiosity reigns. Cindy Meyers Foley is the Executive Assistant Director and Director of Learning and Experience at the Columbus Museum of Art. Foley worked to reimagine the CMA as a 21st century institution that is transformative, active, and participatory. An institution that impacts the health and growth of the community by cultivating, celebrating and championing creativity. Foley envisioned and led the charge to open the 18,000 sq. ft. Center for Creativity in 2011. In 2013, the museum received the National Medal for Museums in recognition of this work. Foley guest edited and wrote chapters for Intentionality and the Twenty-First-Century Museum, for the summer 2014 Journal of Museum Education. In 2012, Foley received the Greater Columbus Arts Council Community Arts Partnership award for Arts Educator. She was a keynote speaker for the OAEA (Ohio Art Education Association) 2012 Conference. She is on the Faculty of Harvard University’s Future of Learning Summer Institute. Foley is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and The Ohio State University. Prior to joining the Museum, she was with the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Wexner Center for the Arts. The Power of belief -- mindset and success | Eduardo Briceno | TEDxManhattanBeach

10:52
The way we understand our intelligence and abilities deeply impacts our success. Based on social science research and real life examples, Eduardo Briceño articulates how mindset, or the understanding of intelligence and abilities, is key. When students or adults see their abilities as fixed, whether they think they're naturals or just not built for a certain domain, they avoid challenge and lose interest when things get hard. Conversely, when they understand that abilities are developed, they more readily adopt learning-oriented behaviors such as deliberate practice and grit that enable them to achieve their goals. But this belief is itself malleable, and there are clear actions we can all take to establish a growth mindset and enable success for our children, our peers and ourselves. Eduardo Briceño is the Co-Founder and CEO of Mindset Works (http://www.mindsetworks.com), an organization that helps schools and other organizations cultivate a growth mindset culture. The growth mindset was discovered by Stanford professor and Mindset Works co-founder Carol Dweck, Ph.D., and is described in her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success (http://www.mindsetonline.com). Mindset Works offers Brainology, an innovative blended learning program to teach a growth mindset to students, teachers and schools, as well as teacher professional development and tools (http://www.mindsetworks.com/brainology/). How to find and do work you love | Scott Dinsmore | TEDxGoldenGatePark (2D)

17:57
Scott Dinsmore's mission is to change the world by helping people find what excites them and build a career around the work only they are capable of doing. He is a career change strategist whose demoralizing experience at a Fortune 500 job launched his quest to understand why 80% of adults hate the work they do, and more importantly, to identify what the other 20% were doing differently. His research led to experiences with thousands of employees and entrepreneurs from 158 countries. Scott distilled the results down to his Passionate Work Framework - three surprisingly simple practices for finding and doing work you love, that all happen to be completely within our control. He makes his career tools available free to the public through his community at http://LiveYourLegend.net In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
