Nigerian Central Bank sets new exchange rate for certain consumers

05:58
Nigeria has set a new naira exchange rate for consumers with certain foreign expenses and stepped up dollar sales on the official market to narrow the spread with the black market. Analysts doubted whether the moves would draw investors back to the suffering economy. The regulator said Nigerians can now get the dollar at N360 across all commercial banks within the country. Nigeria is battling a currency crisis brought on by low oil prices. The prices have tipped its economy into a recession, hammered its dollar reserves and created chronic dollar shortages, frustrating businesses and individuals. The central bank, opposed to a free naira float, has been selling the U.S. currency on the official currency market to try to narrow the spread with the black market rate, which was at 390 last week, albeit down from 520 to the dollar a month ago.

Nigeria Is Printing Its Currency Into Oblivion! - How This Is Bankrupting The Nigerian People

13:13
Josh Sigurdson talks with author and economic analyst John Sneisen about the continued devaluation of the Nigerian Naira as the central bank prints more currency. The Nigerian central bank (CBN), complete with a pyramid on its roof is printing vast amounts of the Naira to fund its government. According to Quartz, "Between December 2013 and April 2017 for instance, the CBN’s “claims on the federal government” went from 678 billion naira to 6.5 trillion naira ($1.8 billion to $17.3 billion)—an almost 10-fold rise. These “claims” are made up of overdrafts, treasury bills, converted bonds and other such lending. For the most part, the issue has remained an obscure one that receives hardly any attention from local media. But then, a couple of weeks ago, the CBN finally published the personal statements of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) members from the July meeting [PDF] and suddenly the alarm bells started ringing. The personal statement of Dr. Doyin Salami, a well-regarded member of the MPC noted for his straight talking, said the CBN was providing a “piggy-bank” service to the federal government." The inflation rate currently sits at 16.01% which is massive. The country like many countries is largely oil dependent which is something we're seeing in Algeria, Venezuela and in the past Zimbabwe. At the moment, one Naira equals $0.0028 USD. We are watching nearly every country in the world print their currencies into oblivion. All fiat currencies eventually revert to their intrinsic values of zero. They always have and they always will. The constant quantitative easing is incredibly volatile and dangerous. A populace in debt is a populace in servitude. That's exactly where the state and central banking system wants people. We will continue to cover this issue. Stay tuned for more from WAM! According to NAIJ.com findings, the local currency maintained the same rates of N366 against Dollar and N4308 against Euro as it was yesterday, May 24 NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) made available 210 million dollars to meet customers’ requests in various segments of the foreign exchange market, Isaac Okorafor, the acting Director, Corporate Communications (CBN) said in a statement. Okorafor stated in the statement on Wednesday, May 23, in Abuja that CBN offered 100 million dollars to authourised dealers in the wholesale segment of the market. He noted that the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) segment got an allocation of 55 million dollars. He added that customers needing foreign exchange for invisibles such as tuition fees, medical payments and Basic Travel Allowance (BTA), among others, were also allocated 55 million dollars. He stated that “CBN has reliably gathered that some banks are turning back customers that come to purchase BTA/PTA and Foriegn Exchange for pilgrimage. “We hereby appeal to bank customers to go straight to their banks to buy forex as the CBN has supplied enough dollars to banks to meet needs in the invisible segment. “Customers are hereby enjoined to report any bank that refuses to attend to their legitimate demands within 24 hours. Please call 07002255226,” he said. Okorafor stated that the commitment to continue to intervene in the interbank foreign exchange market was in line with pledge to sustain liquidity in the market and maintain stability. He said the CBN would sustain its strategic management of the foreign exchange market with a view to reducing the country’s import bills and halt depletion of its foreign reserves. The Naira : Story Of Rise And Fall

06:45
Since 1986 the Nigerian Naira, has steadily been depreciating steadily against major currencies (dollar, pounds, etc) of the world over the past few decade, causing heartbreak and tears. The built-in dysfunction has also made a lot of people very rich. In the 70’s and early 80’s one Naira was approximately two dollars . In the early 90’s it had fallen to N10 per dollar and by year 2000 it was over a hundred Naira to one dollar. Currently, the currency exchanges at over 360 to the dollar.

Naira Devaluation: Nigerian currency now N187.55 to US Dollar

01:17
The Nigerian Naira has fallen to a record low against the US Dollar as it opened at 184.60 to the Dollar on Monday, December 1 but quickly fell to 187.55. The Naira initially showed a 0.3 percent decline from the previous amount but it dipped even further as the demand for the Dollar increased. The new findings were collated by the Thomson Reuters Corporation, a mass media and information firm located in the US. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had earlier announced a devaluation of the Naira from N155 to N168 to the US dollar citing falling oil prices as one of the reasons for the move.

Nigeria's currency plummets as naira floated

02:50
(20 Jun 2016) Nigeria's currency plummeted on Monday, losing more than 40 percent of its value as the government floated the naira for the first time in the history of the oil-producing nation. The move was forced by a spiralling economic crisis and massive shortage of foreign exchange created by slumping oil prices and aggravated by President Muhammadu Buhari's 16-month-long insistence that the Central Bank defend the naira at a fixed rate of 197 to the dollar. Other oil producers like Angola and Venezuela devalued months ago. The naira started trading on Monday at 255 to the dollar but ended with 530 million US dollars being traded at 280 to the dollar among 21 banks, according to traders who insisted on anonymity because the Central Bank has not published the figures. The naira had crashed to 370 to the dollar on the parallel market before last Wednesday's announcement that market forces will prevail amid a backlog of demand estimated at four billion US dollars by Nigerian economic analyst SBM Intelligence. Private foreign exchange dealers stopped trading on Monday as people wanting to buy foreign currency began bidding at banks, with the naira's new value to be decided by demand with no initial intervention, Central Bank officials said. The parallel market rate dropped to between 315 and 330 to the dollar. Naira is the biggest loser against the U.S. Dollar

01:00
Expectedly, Nigeria's Naira heads the list of currencies that have fallen the most against the Dollar so far this year. The Naira's plummet is mainly due to a long-overdue floating of the currency on the 20th of June. Mozambique's Metical is next, having lost over a quarter of its value to the dollar, followed by Sierra Leone's leone. Angola's Kwanza, which has been devalued, is next, followed by Guinea's Franc. Egypt's Pound, which is expected to be devalued further, is down 11.86% against the dollar, in the year to date.

Nigerians expect official rate to follow as Naira weakens against dollar

Nigerian currency, Naira, has lost a third of its value on unofficial "parallel markets" since last month. Even though the Naira is plunging on the street, as a result of the collapse of global prices for oil exports, the official exchange rate is yet to budge. "With the exchange rates, with the economy so far now, it's not really helping us because the exchange has really gone high and with the goods we have now people are not really responding," said Chioma Oluwaseun, a wholesaler. Nigeria's Naira falls to its weakest point at 492 to the dollar

02:50
Nigeria's Naira has fallen to 492 to the dollar in parallel markets amidst calls to reform the country's foreign exchange laws and ban black market currency trading. The decline has seen the Naira at its weakest point since the central bank floated the Naira, ending a deeply flawed 16-month peg to the Dollar, in late June. CCTV's Kelechi Emekalam spoke to Nigeria's law reform commission, and filed this report about a draft bill which some argue, will calm the county's dysfunctional currency markets.

Nigeria's central bank floats embattled naira currency

After resisting pressure to float Nigeria's currency to help in an economic crisis, the country's central bank on Wednesday announced an easing of controls on the naira. President Muhammadu Buhari had sworn he wouldn't let the naira's value fall, but foreign currency reserves have run low as oil exports bring in less cash. Limited access to dollars added to economic pressures and choked off imports including petrol. Last month the central bank governor warned of an imminent recession. Meanwhile, we return for the second part in our series on the often-fatal standoff between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in Nigeria. Progress to find a route to reconciliation has been slow, but there are efforts underway at the grassroots level to resolve the conflict. And during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, many believers make an extra effort to help out those in need. Naira To Remain At N360, Until Production

05:18
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, said naira would continue to exchange at N360 to a dollar until production and export of goods increases significantly in the country. Speaking on the issue, the Acting Director in charge of Corporate Communications at the CBN, Mr. Isaac Okoroafor, also stated that if it had given in to pressures put on it to float the naira, the country’s currency would have depreciated to N3,000 to the dollar. According to him, dollar cannot be said to be over-valued against the naira, because currency valuation is not determined in isolation, but is also hinged on the strength and the ability of the country to produce and export. However, Okoroafor added that as soon as the Nigerian economy improves, especially with positive signals seen in the 2018 budget, the value of the naira would increase and the currency would drop below N360 to a dollar. Nigeria's currency plummets as naira floats for 1st time

01:08
Nigeria's currency plummeted Monday, losing more than 40 percent of its value as the government floated the naira for the first time in the history of the oil-producing nation. The move was forced by a spiraling economic crisis and massive shortage of foreign exchange created by slumping oil prices and aggravated by President Muhammadu Buhari's 16-month-long insistence that the Central Bank defend the naira at a fixed rate of 197 to the dollar. Other oil producers like Angola and Venezuela devalued months ago. The naira started Monday at 255 to the dollar but ended with $530 million being traded at 280 to the dollar among 21 banks, according to traders who insisted on anonymity because the Central Bank has not published the figures. The naira had crashed to 370 to the dollar on the parallel market before last Wednesday's announcement that market forces will prevail amid a backlog of demand estimated at $4 billion by Nigerian economic analyst SBM Intelligence. Private foreign exchange dealers stopped trading Monday as people wanting to buy foreign currency began bidding at banks, with the naira's new value to be decided by demand with no initial intervention, Central Bank officials said. The parallel market rate dropped to between 315 and 330 to the dollar. "This is good news for the majority of Nigerians," Ayo Teriba, CEO of Economic Associates consultancy, said of the devaluation. "The biggest gain is on the appreciation of the parallel market because the parallel market devaluation has destroyed domestic activities, with prices of local goods skyrocketing." Imported goods also have doubled and trebled in price. Inflation is soaring at nearly 16 percent this month, and analysts say it will get worse before it slows down. The parallel market will retain relevance as long as the Central Bank maintains a ban on buying dollars from banks for imports of 41 restricted items, from private jets to tomatoes and toothpicks, a move to boost domestic production and reduce the West African nation's heavy reliance on imports. The devaluation is a boon for MTN, Africa's largest telecommunications company, which this month negotiated a deal to pay a fine of 330 billion naira, now effectively discounted by about 30 percent. Among losers are companies with billions of naira trapped in Nigeria that they were not allowed to repatriate. Analysts said the devaluation could exacerbate bad debts already standing at 10 percent of bank loans. Bankers will adjust loans made in dollars to the new value of the naira, including more than $10 billion loaned to Nigerian companies to buy assets from oil multinationals in recent years.
