Money and Finance: Crash Course Economics #11

10:36
So, we've been putting off a kind of basic question here. What is money? What is currency? How are the two different. Well, not to give away too much, but money has a few basic functions. It acts as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and as a unit of account. Money isn't just bills and coins. It can be anything that meets these three criteria. In US prisons, apparently, pouches of Mackerel are currency. Yes, mackerel the fish. Paper and coins work as money because they're backed by the government, which is an advantage over mackerel. So, once you've got money, you need finance. We'll talk about borrowing, lending, interest, and stocks and bonds. Also, this episode features a giant zucchini, which Adriene grew in her garden. So that's cool. Special thanks to Dave Hunt for permission to use his PiPhone video. this guy really did make an artisanal smartphone! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eaiNsFhtI8 Crash Course is on Patreon! 07:47
How do Visa and Mastercard credit cards compare? Which one is better? What even is the difference between the two cards? Who should you trust with your money? According to data released April 26, 2018, by the American Banking Association, there were 364 million open credit card accounts in the United States as of the end of 2017. China's Credit Bubble Too Big for Their Foreign Exchange Reserves & Physical Gold to Cover?

13:14
Why has China decided to open up their financial system now by (finally) allowing up to 51% ownership allowed by foreign investors? http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-11-10/chinas-big-bang-bombshell-opens-financial-sector-foreign-ownership-why-now Jason Burack of Wall St for Main St says China is doing this because the normally opaque Chinese government desperately needs the influx of US Dollars and foreign capital. This would be the bailout before the REAL major bailout. Using other people's money (OPM) for a bailout is preferred by the Chinese before they do a major RMB devaluation in the near future. Also, given how China's current government is normally not very transparent about much of anything, it is VERY highly unusual for high ranking Chinese Communist Party officials and high ranking members of the People's Bank of China (PBOC) to give public warnings and talk about Minsky moments, credit bubbles, and unsustainable levels of debt in their financial system. Other experts like Kyle Bass, Daniel Lacalle https://mises.org/wire/crisis-or-stagnation-why-china-cannot-deleverage, and Louis Cammarosano of Smaulgld https://smaulgld.com/chinas-gold-save-debt-collapse/ just to name a few also agree that China does NOT have enough foreign exchange reserves from many years of trade surpluses and physical gold to cover their enormous credit bubble, which according to the PBOC website now stands around 220 trillion RMB ($40 trillion US Dollars) in size. What do you think China will do to handle this credit bubble? RMB devaluations? Massive bailouts? Taiwanese use new machines to exchange trash for cash

04:59
(28 Sep 2018) LEADIN Residents in Taiwan are getting an extra incentive to recycle their garbage - money. The city of Tapiei has installed a smart recycling centre that refunds cash to a user's transport card when they recycle empty bottles and cans.   STORYLINE This is an iTrash booth in Taipei City and it's a prototype service that lets people earn money from recycling their cans and bottles. The initiative seeks to promote recycling while also giving residents more flexibility in how they dispose of their household garbage. People living in the San-Ai Borough, can visit the 24 hour booth anytime to dispose of their waste and to also receive credit for doing it.   For every recyclable bottle or can, a user gets money back on their EasyCard, a smart card Taipei people use to ride on the MRT (Mass Rapid Transportation). Huang, a 45-year-old woman living in the neighborhood, who is using the iTrash booth for the first time, welcomes the new service. "It is very near to my house. I can collect cash on my EasyCard, and contribute to the protection of environment, so I think it is quite convenient. By doing this, I contribute to save our Earth, and I am reimbursed with cash on my EasyCard. I think this is really convenient," she says. The iTrash booth takes both kitchen wastes and recyclables. With EasyCards, people pay to throw away kitchen waste, and they get refunds for recycling. With little space for landfills and limited incineration options, crowded Taiwan has for decades required strict separation of paper, plastic, metal and kitchen scraps. However, many residents must haul their waste to garbage trucks that circulate twice a day and keep the trash at home if they miss the trucks. The developer plans to build iTrash booths around Taipei City, if this prototype is successful. Jewel Liu, Vice-General manager at Hao-Yang Environmental Science Ltd, which makes iTrash booths says: "One single booth collects around 200 kilogram of waste. We intend to create around 10,000 iTrash booths around Taipei, so that every Taipei citizen could recycle at the machines. By then, the services provided by iTrash could be more complete and be part of Taipei City's smartcity ideals." Hsu, a 38-year-old electrical engineer living in the neighborhood, also welcomes the initiative. "I think it is very convenient. For example, I leave work after 8pm or 9pm, and garbage collecting trucks are all gone at that time. But I can come here anytime I want, and I collect cash for my EasyCard. It is also easy to use." Lee Wei-bin, Taipei City Government's Department of Information Technology Commissioner says: "People can arrange their life as they wish. They do not have to wait for the garbage truck at a certain hour in the evening near their home, otherwise throwing garbage away has to wait for another day (if they miss the garbage truck). Then about recycling. If a community management is in charge, then it is okay. But what if there is not? So iTrash can also help with recycling. And users get directly refunded with cash on their EasyCard. People can be in full control of their schedule, and they do not have to worry about storing garbage in their house." Lee says the feedback is positive, and that borough chiefs and city councillors are asking him to build more of the booths in their districts. Chen Jen-chih, the San-Ai Borough chief who owns a Chinese medicine pharmacy, says the service is positive because it is boosting people's awareness on environmental protection. Money & Debt: Crash Course World History 202

14:04
In which John Green teaches about filthy, filthy lucre. Money. And Debt. So, what is money? And what is it for? And why do we use money? And why does it all disappear so quickly after payday? John will look into 75% of these questions, and if he doesn't come up with answers, we'll get into some interesting ideas along the way, at least. This week we'll investigate whether money displaces barter, then leads to war, slavery, and what we think of as civilized social orders. We'll also see what old Adam Smith thinks of big money, no whammies, this week on Crash Course. We'll also talk quite a bit about Debt: The First 5000 Years by David Graeber. You can buy that book here: http://dft.ba/-debt5000 You can directly support Crash Course at https://www.patreon.com/crashcourse Subscribe for as little as $0 to keep up with everything we're doing. Why Do Credit Crunches Keep Crushing The Little People? | The Exchange | Real Vision™

02:22
Does prolonged misallocation eventually distort the moral and social fiber of political systems? In this third and final installment of their “Exchange” series, Grant Williams, Simon Mikhailovich and Dan Oliver tackle this controversial but compelling topic, drawing on historical anecdotes to make some uncomfortable comparisons with past periods of profligacy and excess. And I think, again, looking back at history, there's some good lessons we can draw. The very first, as I mentioned earlier, credit collapse that history records in detail is the Athenian credit collapse of 594 BC that Aristotle talks about, other people. What happened there I think is very instructive for us. And that is imagine, hypothetically, an economy with 100 drachmas. And the Nobles have them all. That's why they're the Nobles. And they lend them to the peasants at 10% interest. A year later, the peasants owe the Nobles 110 drachmas. Where do the 10 come from to pay the interest? Before the coin arrived in Athens, it would be grain loans. So you'd lend people actually things that produce of themselves. I give you seeds, and then you plant them and you get more back. And so interest wasn't a problem. But you can't pay interest with coins. And this is why Aristotle said that usury, the taking of interest on money, was contrary to nature because the coins could not themselves reproduce, self-reproduce. Now, if you talk about usury in the prohibition, you're considered an economic primitive in a sort of way in the Middle Ages. But I have not yet seen the simple arithmetic of how the peasants can pay back the 110 when there are only 100 in the economy. The modern answer to this problem, remember, is to print up the extra 10. That's what the Fed does. If the people owe the banks more than they have, they print the money up and give it to the banks, which makes no sense to the people who owe the money. And this is why there is QE for the people in this sort of proposal, which, again, has a logic to it, which is that the little people, the middle class, is head over heels in debt to the oligarchs, the people who live in New York, ultimately. And again, it's not just Athens. It's not just here. But Caesar came to power promising to get rid of interest payments. Robespierre talked about it. So when you look at the rise of great populist movements, whether it's Italy with Mussolini, or in this country, or in antiquity, it usually centers around the great credit collapse, where the little people are sunk under their debts, they can't pay their debts, and some strongman arrives and says, I will bail you out.

How to pay off a 30 year home mortgage in 5-7 years

29:13
SUMMARY: In the above video I reveal a powerful strategy that is practically available to all, but is known and fully understood by a very few. If one takes the time to learn and implement this method of eliminating debt, one may find themselves pleasantly surprised of how quickly their home mortgage, auto loans, student loans or business loans can be completely paid off. This strategy is known as Velocity Banking and in the video I will demonstrate how Velocity Banking can be used to pay off a 30 year home mortgage in just 5-7 years without sending double payments to the bank or changing one’s current level of income. RECAP OF THE VIDEO: I start off by creating a scenario of a financial situation by taking an average household net income in the United States combined with some of the basic monthly expenses: home mortgage, minimum payment on a credit card, car payment and living expenses which include groceries, utilities, gym membership… Once all expenses are identified and subtracted from the net monthly income it is important to understand the impact of cash flow, the difference between a loan and a line of credit, how the interest of a loan and a line of credit is calculated, and how monthly payments on a mortgage are dispersed between interest and principal paydown. To help demonstrate these differences I create tables and an amortization graph. As I go on to unveil the main differences I also identify the biggest reason why nowadays most homeowners are unable to payoff their home mortgages due to the unstrategic use of home refinancing. By this point having had identified the difference between a loan and a line of credit I can reveal the benefits of utilizing a line of credit to pay off a home mortgage in 5-7 years. This is where I get into the Velocity Banking strategy which incorporates an unaccustomed method of moving one’s entire monthly paycheck into a line of credit instead of the accustomed checkings and savings accounts. By adopting this method one can leverage a line of credit to free up cash flow, gain cash back rewards, build credit history and improve credit score, but the greatest leverage created is the thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest savings. PROBLEMS OF BARTER EXCHANGE DISADVATNGES OF BARTER EXCHANGE

13:37
DISADVANTAGES OR PROBLEMS OF BARTER EXCHANGE SYSTEM Double Coincidence of Wants The wants of the two persons who desire to exchange goods must coincide. For example, if person A wants to acquire shoes in exchange for wheat, then he must find another person who wants wheat for shoes. 2. Absence of Common Measure of Value The absence of a common measure of value creates great problem because a lot of time is wasted to strike a bargain. Since there is no common measure in terms of which the value of a commodity can be expressed, the problem arises how much wheat should be exchanged for how many pairs of shoes. In fact, under the barter system, every good must be expressed in terms of every other good. 3. Lack of Divisibility: Another difficulty of barter system relates to the fact that all goods cannot be divided and subdivided. In the absence of a common medium of exchange, a problem arises, when a big indivisible commodity is to be exchanged for a smaller commodity. For example, if the price of a horse is equal to 10 shirts, then a person having one shirt cannot exchange it for the horse because it is not possible to divide the horse in small pieces without destroying its utility. 4. The Problem of Storing Wealth: Under a barter system, there is absence of a proper and convenient means of storing wealth or value, (a) As opposed to storing of generalized purchasing power (in the form of money) in a monetary economy, the individuals have to store specific purchasing power (in the form of horses, shoes, wheat etc.) under the barter system which may decrease in value in the due course of time due to physical deterioration or a change in tastes, (b) It is very expensive to store specific goods for a long time, (c) Again the wealth stored in the form of specific goods may create jealousy and enmity among the neighbours or relatives. 5. Difficulty of Deferred Payments: The barter system does not provide a satisfactory unit in terms of which the contracts about the deferred (future) payments are to be written. In an exchange economy, many contracts relate to future activities and future payments. Under barter system, future payments are written in terms of specific goods. 6. Problem of Transportation: Another difficulty of barter system is that goods and services cannot be transported conveniently from one place to another. For example, it is not easy and without risk for an individual to take heaps of wheat or herd of cattle to a distant market to exchange them for other goods. With the use of money, the inconveniences or risks of transportation are removed.
