Why Private Investment Works & Govt. Investment Doesn't
From transportation to energy, and everything in between, should the government invest money in as many promising projects as possible? Or would that actually doom many of those ventures to failure? Burt Folsom, historian and professor at Hillsdale College, answers those questions by drawing on the fascinating history of the race to build America's railroads and airplanes. A company going bankrupt is not news. But Solyndra was not just any company. Its biggest “investor” was the federal government which had given it $500 million dollars. That was news. But, really, it shouldn’t have been. If history is any guide, it was quite predictable. The government is a very poor investor. And always has been. There are countless examples, but two should serve our purpose here. After the Civil War, American leaders were anxious to bind the country’s North, South, East, and West regions together with transcontinental railroads. Congress therefore gave massive federal aid to build the Union Pacific, the Central Pacific, and later the Northern Pacific Railroads. But all three of these roads had huge financial problems. The Union Pacific, for example, was mired in financial scandal from its inception, went bankrupt several times, and had to rebuild large sections of track thanks to shoddy construction practices. At that same time, James J. Hill, with no federal aid whatsoever, built a railroad from St. Paul to Seattle -- the Great Northern. How was Hill able to do with private funds what the Union Pacific failed to do with a gift of tens of millions of federal dollars? The starting point is incentives. The Union Pacific was paid by the government for each mile of road it built. It was in the railroad’s interest not to build the road straight. The more miles it took the UP to cross Nebraska, for example, the more money it made. Hill, by contrast, used his own capital. To make a profit, he had to build his Great Northern Railroad sturdy and straight. Hill’s company remained in business for almost a hundred years until 1970 when it merged with other railroads. The original Union Pacific, riddled with corruption and numerous other financial misdeeds, including the wholesale bribery of public officials, went broke within ten years. The story of the airplane is even more stark. By the opening of the twentieth century, the major nations of Europe and America were frantically at work trying to invent a flying machine. The first nation to do so would have a huge military and commercial advantage. In fact, leading American politicians of the day, such as Teddy Roosevelt, President William McKinley, and others argued that building an airplane was a national emergency. There was no time, they argued, to wait for private industry to get the job done. The government needed to pick the best aeronautics expert and give him the money he needed. That expert was Samuel Langley, the president of the prestigious Smithsonian Institution and holder of honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, Oxford, and Cambridge. Langley was already an accomplished inventor and he had written a highly praised book Experiments in Aerodynamics. Federal officials gave Langley funds for two trial flights. He immediately set to work. His theory was that his plane needed to be thrust into the air from a houseboat on the Potomac River. The big engine on the plane would then propel it through air for several minutes. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/why-private-investment-works-govt-investment-doesnt

Ray Dalio: "Principles: Life and Work" | Talks at Google
In 1975, Ray Dalio founded an investment firm, Bridgewater Associates, out of his two-bedroom apartment in New York City. Forty years later, Bridgewater has made more money for its clients than any other hedge fund in history, and grown into the fifth most important private company in the United States, according to Fortune magazine. In his new book "Principles", Dalio shares what he’s learned over the course of his remarkable career, arguing that life, management, economics, and investing can all be systemized into rules, and understood like machines. The book’s hundreds of practical lessons, which are built around his cornerstones of “radical truth” and “radical transparency,” offers a clear, straightforward approach to decision-making that Dalio believes anyone can apply, no matter what they’re seeking to achieve. 💸FNMA Stock/FMCC Stock Analysis-Is the Upside in FNMA and FMCC Gigantic? 💸
Why Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae Stocks Are Potential 10-Baggers, 10x, or 10 times your money Is the upside in FNMA and FMCC gigantic? During the mortgage crisis, Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA) and Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp (FMCC) had to be bailed out by the government or so we were told. The U.S. government dumped $187 billion into the agencies. In exchange, it was given warrants to buy 79% of the companies, and the investment (which was in preferred stock) would earn 10% of the agencies’ net profits each quarter. Then the Treasury Department, in an arguably illegal and unconstitutional move, changed the rules so it would sweep out all the net profits of the agencies. The idea was that since FNMA and FMCC as companies were in a death spiral, or so it appeared, and the thinking by the Treasury Department was protecting taxpayer money by taking all the profits and making sure it didn’t have to throw new capital at another bailout. At least, that was the idea. Instead, to the surprise of no one considering this was a move by the government, it actually puts FNMA and FMCC in worse shape since they are being stripped of their capital. The result is FNMA and FMCC are now backstopping some $5 trillion in mortgage debt and have no capital. Moreover, while FNMA and FMCC are controlled by the government, it is actually via a conservatorship which is only supposed to last until the companies are in “sound and solvent condition.” Investors are arguing that FNMA/FMCC have not only repaid taxpayers, but the two companies were stolen from investors. Various lawsuits addressing one of the largest cases of thievery in the United States history have challenged this have been shot down so far, but investors remain hopeful. Not only are FNMA/FMCC profitable now, but they are turning a large profit. U.S. taxpayers have now received back over $260 billion on the $187 billion investment — a $73 billion profit, or 40%. Remember that the companies were only supposed to be in government conservatorship until they achieved “sound and solvent condition.” What many are pushing for, including hedge fund managers Bill Ackman and Bruce Berkowitz, is for the government to recapitalize FNMA and FMCC. Let the companies do their jobs again, with proper reform. Ackman’s proposal to reform FNMA and FMCC suggests possibly future value for them between $23 and $47 per share. And now, there is finally serious talk of reform going on in Congress. Senators Corker and Warner have a proposal that would keep Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac but create competitors, as well as create an explicit guarantee from the government on mortgage bonds that are created under reform. Congressman Hensarling indicated he’d be open to a government guarantee on some mortgage bonds but didn’t want it to be terribly large. New competitors would have to have stress tests and sell off some of the risks to private investors. Even then there would be yet another guarantee put up by the government that would not be a taxpayer burden. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin confirmed what we already knew: Reform of the government-sponsored enterprises isn’t happening this year. Still, Mnuchin remained bullish about prospects for picking up the debate in 2019. “We'll come back to this next year and this will be a big focus of mine post the elections,” he told Fox Business in an interview. “I’m determined that we have a fix to the GSEs and don’t leave them in conservatorship for the rest of time.” Bottom Line on FNMA and FMCC Stock What are the potential outcomes for FNMA stock and FMCC stock? Steve Mnuchin the United States treasury secretary believes FNMA/FMCC are a 2019 story. Steve Mnuchin has already stated he wants to take FNMA/FMCC out of conservatorship. Yes common shareholders could be wiped out because there are preferred shareholders ahead of them. There is a possibility for the shares to go to zero, BUT we aren’t talking about betting the farm here. When the numbers are broken down the United States stole Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac a private company FROM shareholders who still haven’t received compensation. Taxpayers have already turned a massive profit on the bail out by the U.S. government that many argue was unnecessary in the first place. As the clock continues ticking I believe we are getting close to a resolution one way or the other. It’s all or nothing with an investment in FNMA/FMCC and I view the two stocks as options contracts that are skewed in our favor. The only difference is we aren’t paying a huge time premium. Throwing even a couple hundred dollars into these companies and forgetting about it may well be worth the risk because they may potentially be 10 baggers.

In this series, I want to continue my education by digging deeper into the lives and careers of my guests to try and learn how they think. I want to understand the experiences that have shaped them, the failures they bounced back from, and the lessons that those failures have taught them. And I want to break down their success to find out what sets them apart. I'm not looking for trade ideas or guesses about an unknowable future, but rather knowledge, accumulated over the course of careers to try and make me a better investor. And I want to share those conversations with you. Several years ago, I was introduced to my guest today by mutual friends who'd entrusted a significant portion of their savings to. This man, they told me, invest in a way which is not only unlike the methods employed by 99% of money managers today, but also with an integrity and a methodology which is a throwback to a time which is sadly almost vanished. In the intervening period, as I've gotten to know my guest better, I spent a considerable amount of time trying to persuade him to sit down with me and share both his experience and his investment philosophy with the Real Vision audience. Sadly, each of my invitations has been met with a very polite, but very firm, no thank you. This was no surprise to me. My guest has never before been interviewed, either in writing or on camera, and for good reason. He's a private man who prefers to spend his time reading and thinking, who invests far from the spotlight, and with no care for either mainstream opinion or consensus strategies. A year ago, I finally got to meet my guest, and I spent an evening I will never forget listening to him talk about how he sees the world and how he thinks about the discipline of investing. That meeting made me more determined than ever to try and persuade him to break his silence and give others the chance to learn from him as I had done. Now, three years after I first approached him, he's very graciously agreed to talk to me in front of the Real Vision cameras. And so I'm excited to be traveling to the Swiss Alps to discover how his framework has evolved over the years and see how he looks at the process of investing that which he considers permanent, irreplaceable capital. So please join me for a conversation with Tony Deden. There are going to people that watch this who know you, and they're probably sitting there thinking, why the hell is Tony Deden doing it? And then they're going to people that don't know who, after this conversation, are going to go, why the hell do I not know Tony Deden? So I know this is the first time you've done one of these and I really appreciate the fact that you've agreed to do it, because there's so many things I want to talk to you about.

Pat Dorsey: "The Little Book that Builds Wealth" | Talks at Google
What does it mean for a company to have a moat? What are the key drivers to valuation? Pat Dorsey will use examples to shed light on these, and more questions. About the Book: Capitalism works. That’s why most businesses with high returns on capital attract competition that forces down profitability over time. However, a small minority of companies are able to defy the laws of economic gravity by creating competitive advantages, or “economic moats” that insulate them from competition and allow them to maintain high returns on capital. After spending fifteen years analyzing thousands of companies, Pat has identified a handful of structural characteristics that create competitive advantage. He will discuss these characteristics, how management teams can create and destroy competitive advantage, and how he applies competitive analysis in managing institutional capital at Dorsey Asset Management. About the author: Pat is the founder of Dorsey Asset Management, which manages concentrated global portfolios for institutional investors. Prior to starting Dorsey Asset, Pat was Director of Research for Sanibel Captiva Trust, an independent trust company with approximately $1 billion in assets under management serving high net worth clients. From 2000 to 2011, Pat was Director of Equity Research for Morningstar, where he led the growth of Morningstar’s equity research group from 10 to over 100 analysts. Pat developed Morningstar’s economic moat ratings, as well as the methodology behind Morningstar's framework for analyzing competitive advantage. Pat is also the author of two books — The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing and The Little Book that Builds Wealth — and has been quoted in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, the New York Times, and BusinessWeek. Pat holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in government from Wesleyan University. He is a CFA charterholder.

China's outbound investment control to stop capital outflows
The government is limiting overseas investments in property, hotels, entertainment, sports clubs, and the film industry. This is because some of the overseas investments in those areas were purely driven by financial returns and failed to drive economic growth in the host country. These deals also increased capital outflows from China, hitting the security of the financial system.  The green light is being given to investments in line with the Belt and Road Initiative and those conducive to the country's industrial advancement. That means that capital from China will continue to pour into high-end industry, energy and agriculture. How effective are these guidelines in stopping China's capital outflows? Liu Baocheng, dean of the Center for International Business Ethics from the University of International Business and Economics, David Dollar, senior fellow with the Foreign Policy and Global Economy and Development programs at the Brookings Institute, and Mike Bastin, professor at University of Southampton in the UK, weigh in on the issue. Resonance Capital Review - Looks like a SCAM Investment Company
Resonance Capital Review - Looks like a SCAM Investment Company Full review - https://www.tradingwithpaul.com/resonance-capital-review-points-scam/ In this video I take a look at Resonance Capital which claims to be an investments platform offers a few different investment options for members. It has been brought to my attention by some subscribers who were looking for a full Resonance Capital review and this video is my answer. Is Resonance Capital a scam? Well I can't say for sure but there are definitely alot of aspects that I am not happy about and alot of questions that have been raised with no answers. It looks like the financial licence that they have shown is a fake as I wasn't able to find a record of Resonance Capital on the Vanuatu Financial Services Commission site. I also can't find any record of Maris Landsbergis outside his appearance in the videos on the Resonance Capital site and YouTube channel. To be I have a feeling I can't shake that this is an actor given the random name Maris but I don't have proof of that yet. If you know of any of his real social profiles then please leave a link to them below this video. The image that the main contact on the Resonance Capital VK page uses is a stock image which again is another red flag that suggests Resonance Capital may be a scam. "Capital strike": Alberta loses $20B in capital investment after NDP budget, Trudeau election
Ezra Levant of TheRebel.Media reports, we all know what labour strikes are. But what’s a capital strike? That's what's happening in Alberta right now. Literally hours after the NDP's budget was tabled, Shell cancelled a multi-billion dollar oilsands project killing 1,450 jobs. And then, the day after the budget, MEG Energy announced it was laying off more workers and cutting their capital expenditures. It means the world’s investors — which these days means people who manage our pension funds — are telling companies: Don’t invest in Alberta. Capital investment in Alberta was already on track to be down by $20 billion this year alone. But that was before this attack budget removed any doubt that the extremists are in charge. If you’ve got an oilsands project in Alberta that’s already up and running, you can’t move it. You probably can’t shut it down. So you do what MEG did. If you haven’t built your project yet, like Shell, you head to a different country. That’s called a capital strike. Because of Rachel Notley and the risk of Justin Trudeau, the smart money is fleeing Alberta. JOIN TheRebel.media for more fearless news and commentary you won’t find anywhere else. http://www.TheRebel.media SIGN THE PETITION Tell Rachel Notley stop her war on oil and gas jobs in Alberta. www.savealbertajobs.com READ Ezra Levant's bestselling books debunking environmentalist propaganda against the energy industry: Groundswell: The Case for Fracking https://tinyurl.com/LevantGroundswell Ethical Oil: The Case for Canada's Oil Sands https://tinyurl.com/LevantEthicalOil
