No Cuts, No Fees, No Corporate Universities - Students NDA against budget (Melbourne)

02:55
The Abbott government's first budget has heralded in the worst attacks on students in decades: 1.The government will be lowering their contribution to HECS by 20% 2.They are removing caps on fees so universities will be able to charge students WHATEVER THEY WANT 3.The interest rate on HECS will be increased and will be determined by the bond rate. ie. the private market. Students will have no idea what their HECS debt will soar to in the future 4.Private providers will be brought into the government scheme so that public money will be funelled towards private shonky "educational" instituions and away from public education. The government has shown no moderation and has chosen to implement the most savage aspects of the Commission of Audit and the Kemp-Norton review. Christopher Pyne, who went to university for next to nothing, is increasing fees to historic levels and is bringing in a US style education system. Elite universities will become the preserve of the rich and poorer students will be priced out of the education they deserve whilst still being burdened by more debt than ever before. Students need to stand up to these savage attacks! We demand: -No fee hikes! -No deregulation! -No US model! -Education for all! -Step down, Pyne! Academic Research Is Suppressed in the Name of Corporate Profits: University, Education (2005)

48:59
Higher education, post-secondary education, or third level education is an optional final stage of formal learning that occurs after secondary education. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0465090516/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0465090516&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=9a40cb50e6cd83eb4d41371095425b19 Often delivered at universities, academies, colleges, seminaries, and institutes of technology, higher education is also available through certain college-level institutions, including vocational schools, trade schools, and other career colleges that award academic degrees or professional certifications. Tertiary education at non-degree level is sometimes referred to as further education or continuing education as distinct from higher education. The right of access to higher education is mentioned in a number of international human rights instruments. The UN International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of 1966 declares, in Article 13, that "higher education shall be made equally accessible to all, on the basis of capacity, by every appropriate means, and in particular by the progressive introduction of free education". In Europe, Article 2 of the First Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights, adopted in 1950, obliges all signatory parties to guarantee the right to education. In the days when few pupils progressed beyond primary education, the term "higher education" was often used to refer to secondary education, which can create some confusion. Rupert I founded the University of Heidelberg in 1386 Higher education includes teaching, research, exacting applied work (e.g. in medical schools and dental schools), and social services activities of universities. Within the realm of teaching, it includes both the undergraduate level, and beyond that, graduate-level (or postgraduate level). The latter level of education is often referred to as graduate school, especially in North America. Since World War II, developed and many developing countries have increased the participation of the age group who mostly studies higher education from the elite rate, of up to 15 per cent, to the mass rate of 16 to 50 per cent. In many developed countries, participation in higher education has continued to increase towards universal or, what Trow later called, open access, where over half of the relevant age group participate in higher education. Higher education is important to national economies, both as an industry, in its own right, and as a source of trained and educated personnel for the rest of the economy. College educated workers have commanded a measurable wage premium and are much less likely to become unemployed than less educated workers. However, the admission of so many students of only average ability to higher education inevitably requires a decline in academic standards, facilitated by grade inflation. Also, the supply of graduates in many fields of study is exceeding the demand for their skills, which aggravates graduate unemployment and underemployment, as well as credentialism and educational inflation. From the early 1950s to the present, more and more people in the United States have gone on to pursue degrees or certificates of higher education. However this has sparked some debate in recent years as some advocates say that a degree is not what it was once worth to employers. To clarify some advocates say that the financial costs that universities require from their students has gone up so dramatically that it is leaving many students in debt of loans of an average of $33,000. Advocates advise parents to not send their children to college unless these children are committed to pursuing their future education. An increasing number of freshman every year drop out of their perspective programs or do not possess the maturity to have a balanced life away from home. However statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that the college educated are employed at a rate nearly twice that of the national average when compared to high school graduates. The type of degree one pursues will determine how safe and prosperous his/her career path is. A study, published by the Pew Charitable Trusts, shows that among Americans ages 21 to 24, the drop in employment and income was much steeper among people who lacked a college degree. "Among those whose highest degree was a high school diploma, only 55% had jobs even before the downturn, and that fell to 47% after it. For young people with an associates degree, the employment rate fell from 64 to 57. Bachelor's degree slipped from 69 to 65." Professor Lisa Kahn of Yale stated that people who graduated from college in the most recent recession were in a position to gain better security than others. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higher_education Image By Leoncio 08. Joshua Hunt: "University of Nike - How Corporate Cash Bought [...]" | Talks at Google

53:26
In the mid-1990s, facing severe cuts to its public funding, the University of Oregon—like so many colleges across the country—was desperate for cash. Luckily, the Oregon Ducks’ 1995 Rose Bowl berth caught the attention of the school’s wealthiest alumnus: Nike founder Phil Knight, who was seeking new marketing angles at the collegiate level. And so the University of Nike was born: Knight has so far donated more than half a billion dollars to the school in exchange for high-visibility branding opportunities. But as journalist Joshua Hunt shows in University of Nike, Oregon has paid dearly for the veneer of financial prosperity and athletic success that has come with this brand partnering. Ecosystems are larger, more diverse, and more fluid than a traditional set of bilateral partnerships or complementors. By leveraging ecosystems, companies can deliver complex solutions while maintaining corporate focus. This article describes six keys to unlock ecosystem advantage: pinpointing where value is created, defining an architecture of differentiated partner roles, stimulating complementary partner investments, reducing the transaction costs, facilitating joint learning across the network, and engineering effective ways to capture profit. Why College Is So Expensive In America

18:05
College in the United States is expensive. The cost of higher education just keeps going up. Tuition costs at both public and private universities have doubled since the late 80s, while accounting for inflation. "I think that it's so ingrained in your head that you have to go to college, that college is the next step after graduation," said Jarret Freeman, a college graduate with roughly $50,000 in student debt. "I think in hindsight, I see that college is not for everyone." But a college education is becoming more and more necessary to succeed in today's economy. Georgetown University estimates that by 2020, 65 percent of all jobs will require more than a high school degree. Students graduate with an average of $37,172 in student loan debt. It all adds up to $1.5 trillion across the country. Watch the video above to learn how higher education became big business, hear from former students facing mounting debt and explore why it's so important to solve the student debt crisis.» Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. Topic: University corporate culture transformation: the Crisis, the Hope and the Case

36:44
Fulbright Visiting Scholar Natalia Gulius discusses the duality of a modern university cultural base, since the professorial culture traditionally served as its basis is completed by corporate culture and transformed by it. Tensions and contradictions are brought into a university’s life by different functional trends of professorial and corporate cultures. It brings to a university the principles of commercialization, pragmatics and tendencies of education transformation into educational service, which is a conflict area for all members of the university community. Despite this, a new classical university criterion had appeared: a university corporate culture of collaboration, an intricate place where people learn to cooperate. About the speaker: Natalia Gulius, Ph.D. is a Fulbright visiting scholar from the National Research Tomsk State University in Russia, where she is an associate professor in the Institute of Economics and Management. She studies university corporate culture configuration and transformation. Among her goals while a visiting scholar is to transform her University’s Corporate Culture Governance course into an online Moodle format for international master’s program. She also has an interest in public policy analysis in HR management.

Slavoj Zizek on attacks against Bernie Sanders by Corporate Dems

17:56
Slavoj Zizek on attacks against Bernie Sanders by Corporate Dems Cultural philosopher and university professor Slavoj Žižek wrote an article for RT titled, "Fearing establishment, Sanders’ leftist critics offer socialism, without socialism." He accuses the corporate Democrats of offering up fake socialistic promises, and gives examples of how they use identity politics to marginalize Bernie Sanders. I analyze Professor Žižek's article, and expand on it. For the record, I believe in a hybrid economic system that offers socialist programs like Medicare For All, a Green Energy New Deal, Free College, and Fire Departments. I also support an ethical capitalism that encourages entrepreneurs and small businesses, and that is taxation free. I mispronounce Professor Žižek's name. My apologies. The Progressive Income Tax: A Tale of Three Brothers

05:00
"The Progressive Income Tax" is one of those economic terms that gets bandied about, but few actually know what it means or how it works. This tale of three similar brothers with three different incomes (but one shared expense) helps explain the tax system under which we live. Adapted from an article by noted investor and economist, Kip Hagopian, and narrated by actress Carolyn Hennesy of "General Hospital" and "True Blood" fame, this animated story will change the way you think about how you pay your taxes.  Donate today to PragerU! http://l.prageru.com/2ylo1Yt Joining PragerU is free! They were raised in the same home, with the same parents, had the same IQ, same skills and same opportunities. Each was married and had two children. They were all carpenters making $25 per hour. While they were very similar in all these respects, they had different priorities. For example, Tom, chose to work 20 hours per week, while his brother, Dick worked 40 hours and Harry 60. It should also be noted that Harry's wife worked full time as an office manager for a salary of $50,000. Dick's wife sold real estate part time 10 hours a week and made $25,000 per year. Tom's wife did not work. Tom and Dick spent all of their family income. Since they paid into Social Security they figured, they didn't need to save for retirement. Harry and his wife, on the other hand, had, over many years, put away money each month and invested it in stocks and bonds. Here's how it worked out: Tom made $25,000 a year, Dick and his wife made $75,000 and Harry and his wife, $150,000. When a new housing development opened up in their community, the brothers decided to buy equally-priced homes on the same private street. One day the brothers decided to pool their funds for the purpose of improving their street. Concerned about crime and safety, and wanting a more attractive setting for their homes, the three families decided to install a security gate at the street's entrance; repave the street's surface; and enhance the lighting and landscaping. The work was done for a total cost of $30,000. Harry assumed they would divide the bill three ways, each brother paying $10,000. But Tom and Dick objected. "Why should we pay the same as you?" they said. "You make much more money than we do." Harry was puzzled. "What does that have to do with anything?" he asked. "My family makes more money because my wife and I work long hours, and because we have saved some of the money we've earned to make additional money from investments. Why should we be penalized for that?" "Harry, you can work and save all you like" Tom countered. "But my wife and I want to enjoy ourselves now, not 25 years from now." "Fine, Tom. Do what you want. It's a free country. But why should I have to pay for that? "I can't believe your being so... unbrotherly," Tom argued. "You have a lot of money and I don't. I thought you'd be more generous." At this point, Dick, the peacemaker in the family, entered the conversation. "I've got an idea," Dick said. "Our combined income is $250,000, and $30,000 is 12 percent of that amount. Why don't we each pay that percentage of our income? Under that formula, Tom would pay $3,000, I would pay $9,000, and Harry would pay $18,000." "I have a much better idea," said Tom. "And one that's fairer than what you're proposing." For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/progressive-income-tax-tale-three-brothers

CLP Speaker Series - Unlearning How to Think Like a Lawyer: A Corporate Lawyers Reflects

01:03:00
Jeffrey Lipshaw is Professor of Law at the Suffolk University Law School in Boston, where he teaches contract law and courses in the business curriculum. He writes on contract theory, corporate law, and business judgment, with focus on the overlap between business and legal decision-making. He is particularly interested in the theoretical and practical implications of having been trained merely to “think like a lawyer” when confronting uncertainty and making decisions in business transactions. He is the author of Beyond Legal Reasoning: a Critique of Pure Lawyering (Routledge, 2017), and a co-author of the casebook, Unincorporated Business Entities (LexisNexis), and the ABA publication, Becoming a Law Professor. His articles have appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as Law, Culture, and the Humanities, the Canadian Journal of Law & Jurisprudence, and the Journal of Law & Religion. In addition, he has published in the Minnesota Law Review, Illinois Law Review, University of Cincinnati Law Review, Penn State Law Review, Seton Hall Law Review, Connecticut Law Review, Southern California Interdisciplinary Law Journal, Delaware Journal of Corporate Law, Temple Law Review, and other student-edited journals. Professor Lipshaw was a founding co-editor of the Legal Profession Blog, an inductee in the ABA Journal’s Blawg 100 Hall of Fame. He was also a co-editor, with William Henderson and Jerry Organ, of The Legal Whiteboard, a blog about trends, facts, and ideas in law and legal education. He is a frequent guest blogger on PrawfsBlawg. Before becoming a full-time academic in 2007, Professor Lipshaw spent twenty-six years as a lawyer and business executive, most recently serving as Senior Vice-President, General Counsel, and Secretary for Great Lakes Chemical Corporation, a Fortune 850 company based in Indianapolis, Indiana, and listed on the New York Stock Exchange. There he counseled the company’s Board of Directors in its compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley and NYSE governance requirements, led the company’s efforts in significant acquisitions and dispositions, and managed a law department with an internal and external annual budget of over $10 million. Professor Lipshaw began his career in 1979 at the law firm of Dykema Gossett in Detroit, where he was a partner in the litigation and corporate groups, and served from 1993 to 1997 as the Vice President & General Counsel of AlliedSignal Automotive, a large auto parts manufacturer. Before coming to Suffolk, he was a visiting professor at the Wake Forest and Tulane law schools. He is a 1976 graduate of the University of Michigan, and a 1979 graduate of the Stanford Law School. Is Corporate Law Still a Race to the Top?

01:01:13
April 8, 2008 Speaker: Hon. Frank H. Easterbrook, Chief Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit Presented by: the Center for Business Law and Regulation Summary: Dean Lindsey Cowen Business Law Lecture Judge Easterbrook will revisit issues relating to corporate law, in particular whether competition between states for corporate charters produces a race to the top of corporate law, a long-standing assumption in academic literature. He was also a principal in Lexecon, an economic and financial consulting firm. Judge Easterbrook continues to teach at the University of Chicago. He received his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1973, where he was an editor of the Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif. Hundred Bagger Secrets: Strong, Performance-Focused Corporate Culture

02:12
Subscribe to SixJupiter's Hundred Bagger Watchlist: https://www.sixjupiter.com Ultimately, a big part of the secret to finding hundred baggers is simply to find great companies before other investors do. While many signs of great companies in the making ultimately show up in financial statements, there are others that do not. For instance, a strong internal culture featuring employees with high morale is a hallmark of companies on the hundred bagger trajectory. John Kotter, co-author of the book "Corporate Culture and Performance," wrote in an article for Forbes.com: "We argued that strong corporate cultures that facilitate adaptation to a changing world are associated with strong financial results. We found that those cultures highly value employees, customers, and owners and that those cultures encourage leadership from everyone in the firm." https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnkotter/2011/02/10/does-corporate-culture-drive-financial-performance/#99989ba7e9e9 Kotter and Heskett even conducted a study of firms with such cultures, comparing them against a sample of firms that do not have such cultures. Even after controlling for other variables, they found that the strong culture cohort experienced more than 4 times revenue growth, over 12 times share price growth, and a stagging 756 times earnings growth relative to the weaker culture cohort over the long term. SixJupiter's artificial intelligence uses data from Glassdoor to understand which companies have the kinds of culture and employee morale needed to generate outperformance. Glassdoor data has been shown to correlate with stock price performance. A 2017 research paper published at the University of East Anglia found that companies with high employee satisfaction significantly outperformed the market over the eight year period observed. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165176517304433 The authors of the study concluded that "Employees' online reviews are good predictors of a firm's financial results and, consequently, of value-relevance for investors." https://www.glassdoor.com/research/satisfied-employees-drive-business-results/ SixJupiter is continually scouring the market of exchange traded US companies to find stocks that meet the attributes of hundred baggers. Visit sixjupiter.com to start taking advantage of SixJupiter's artificial intelligence.

Why you should make useless things | Simone Giertz

11:58
In this joyful, heartfelt talk featuring demos of her wonderfully wacky creations, Simone Giertz shares her craft: making useless robots. Her inventions -- designed to chop vegetables, cut hair, apply lipstick and more -- rarely (if ever) succeed, and that's the point. "The true beauty of making useless things [is] this acknowledgment that you don't always know what the best answer is," Giertz says. "It turns off that voice in your head that tells you that you know exactly how the world works. Maybe a toothbrush helmet isn't the answer, but at least you're asking the question."
