The Silk Road and Ancient Trade: Crash Course World History #9

10:31
The Silk Road and Ancient Trade: In which John Green teaches you about the so-called Silk Road, a network of trade routes where goods such as ivory, silver, iron, wine, and yes, silk were exchanged across the ancient world, from China to the West. Along with all these consumer goods, things like disease and ideas made the trip as well. As is his custom, John ties the Silk Road to modern life, and the ways that we get our stuff today. Congo, My Precious. The Curse of the coltan mines in Congo

52:01
Watch more https://rtd.rt.com/tags/illegal-mining/ The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world. From colonisation, with the horrors of slavery and other atrocities, to a turbulent and equally brutal present in which militant groups control the mines, Congo’s richness in natural resources has brought nothing but misery. Referred to as “conflict minerals”, these riches leave only a trail of death, destruction and poverty. Under Belgian rule, Congolese labourers were often required to meet quotas when mining different minerals. Failure could mean punishment by having a hand cut off with a machete. The country gained independence in 1960, but that didn’t put a stop to slave and child labour or to crimes being committed to extract and exploit the minerals. Warring militant fractions from inside the country and beyond seized control of mines for their own benefit while terrorising local populations. For our translator, Bernard Kalume Buleri, his country’s history of turmoil is very personal; like most Congolese people, he and his family fell victim to the unending mineral based power struggle. Born in the year of his country’s independence, he has lived through war and seen his homeland torn apart by violent looting and greed. His story is a damning testament, illustrating how nature’s bounty, instead of being a blessing, becomes a deadly curse. 2. Introduction to Installation Art

14:06
A wide variety of work falls under the umbrella of ‘Installation Art’. As artist Liam Gillick observes, the term ‘installation art’ describes ‘a mode and type of production rather than a movement or strong ideological framework’. Despite the lack of a consistent theme or objective, there are certain ideas that persist in the work of artists who produce installation work. Central to these works is the desire to activate the viewer and to provoke an acute awareness towards the environments in which we find ourselves. For more information about the artworks discussed, check out the links below: Installation Art http://www.tate.org.uk/learn/online-resources/glossary/i/installation-art http://www.tate.org.uk/context-comment/articles/it-installation-art http://www.visual-arts-cork.com/installation-art.htm El Lissitzky, Prounenraum https://www.moma.org/explore/multimedia/audios/244/2439 Kurt Schwitters, Merzbau http://www.moma.org/explore/inside_out/2012/07/09/in-search-of-lost-art-kurt-schwitterss-merzbau http://www.tate.org.uk/research/publications/tate-papers/08/kurt-schwitters-reconstructions-of-the-merzbau Allan Kaprow, Environments http://www.theartstory.org/artist-kaprow-allan.htm Claes Oldenburg, The Store http://www.moma.org/interactives/exhibitions/2013/oldenburg/ Robert Morris, Untitled http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/morris-untitled-t01532/text-illustrated-companion Dan Flavin http://www.theartstory.org/artist-flavin-dan.htm https://www.guggenheim.org/artwork/artist/dan-flavin Bruce Nauman http://www.art21.org/artists/bruce-nauman http://www.theartstory.org/artist-nauman-bruce.htm http://uk.phaidon.com/agenda/art/articles/2014/july/21/how-bruce-nauman-turned-corridors-into-artworks/ http://www.medienkunstnetz.de/works/live-taped-video-corridor/video/1/ Rirkrit Tiravanija, untitled (free/still) http://www.moma.org/explore/inside_out/2012/02/03/rirkrit-tiravanija-cooking-up-an-art-experience http://web.mit.edu/allanmc/www/rirkritmca.pdf Yayoi Kusama, Obliteration Room http://www.tate.org.uk/context-comment/video/tateshots-kusamas-obliteration-room http://www.tate.org.uk/context-comment/blogs/kusama-and-infinity https://www.guggenheim.org/blogs/checklist/zero-infinity-yayoi-kusama-guggenheim Further viewing https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUrhv9kQXDv8edyR3fZmKehMgqPxzJQ-r

History & the Arts – Postmodernism: Design in a Nutshell (6/6)

02:25
Less is more? Less is a bore! More than just an artistic style, Postmodernism was a mindset, a way of rejecting how we understand our world. Because the Postmodernists refused to see things as one thing or another, this blurring of boundaries had the power to bring about great social change. Graphic Design Pioneer—Alexander Rodchenko Russian Constructivist

17:20
Before designers like Shepard Fairey started his ubiquitous Andre The Giant has a posse and the "OBEY" phenomenon, Russian artist and graphic designer Alexander Rodchenko was blazing a trail and forging a path forward for contemporary graphic design. To say that he and other Russian Constructivist "influenced" contemporary design would be an understatement. Ben wanted to learn more about Art History, so Chris gave him a homework assignment on Alexander Rodchenko. His work continues to inspire logos, posters and other design works today. Whose work inspires you? -- 0:46 Alexander Rodchenko: 1891-1956 1:19 Dance. An Objectless Composition - 1915 1:47 Construction No. 127 1920 2:08 Pure Red Color, Pure Yellow Color, Pure Blue Color (The End Of Painting 1921) 2:34 Alexander embraced the idea that artists and designers as engineers over asthetes (people who value asthetics) 3:13 Rodchenko is known as a father of constructivism (Spatial construction No. 12 - 1920) 4:57 Switch from fine art into design/purpose (Better Pacifiers 1923) 6:56 In the 1920's Rodchenko delved into politics (Books 1924) 8:11 Originality - Everything comes from something. 8:35 It's hard to pull off symmetrical layouts and make them look fresh and modern. 10:09 Strive to create design that is timeless, and is rooted in solid design fundamentals. 13:40 In the 1930's Rodchenko's design work became outlawed, so he shifted his focus to photography 15:24 A lot of our visual vocabulary is borrowed from the past. 16:18 Let go of trying to be original, and focus on being good. — We need your support today! Identify what sources are good to use for your papers. Learn the difference between scholarly, academic, professional, popular, and substantive news publications and the benefits and uses for each. To effectively research for college-level papers, students must learn how to evaluate articles in journals and magazines. In this video, an art history professor at Otis College of Art and Design discusses some of the criteria useful in determining whether the information found is scholarly, popular, or professional. The same evaluation criteria may be applied to information found on websites and in books. Please see also the Otis Information Literacy website: http://library.otis.edu/informationliteracy.html

Papers 7: Evaluation - Virtual Art Museums As An Educational Resource For Teaching

16:46
Papers 7: Evaluation Sala dei Dugento Thursday, February 20th Virtual Art Museums As An Educational Resource For Teaching And Learning Artistic Heritage Carmen Tejera, Spain This paper outlines the results of the research carried out in my doctoral thesis, which deals with virtual art museums from an educational approach. The study focuses on the educational web sites and their interactive learning activities, considered as a didactic resource for teaching and learning artistic heritage. The theoretical framework stems from an educational conception based on inquiry. It sets up three didactic models according to the methodology used: traditional, activist and investigative. These models have been designed for the context of formal learning, so the aim of this work is to apply this classification in the scope of virtual museums. A previous step in the investigation consists of stating the terms in order to delimit the object of study. Virtual museums have been classified in three categories according to their educational projection: informative, expositive and interactive. Informative museums show in their Educational Section (ES) the Presential Learning Activities (PLA) they offer in the physical museum. Expositive ones have an educational section with Downloadable Learning Materials (DLM) and a Multimedia Section (MS) with Expositive Multimedia Materials (EMM). Interactive museums hold an Educational Web Site (EWS) with Interactive Learning Activities (ILA), and they are the only ones that take advantage of the didactic possibilities of the internet, mixing online, multimedia and interactivity. 500 virtual museums showing their pages in Spanish or English have been visited and there have been found 84 interactive virtual art museums, whose educational web sites offer 388 interactive learning activities. Those museums have been classified into the three didactic models and it has been proposed a taxonomy of activities and tasks belonging to each model: Museums which show a traditional didactic model are characterized by a transmissive methodology and contents derived from Art history. Some of the activities are based upon academic contents such as tests, quizzes, crosswords, matching artists with their works, recognizing styles and decoding symbols and sounds. Museums with an activist didactic model bring a recurring and procedural learning based on Art history, by the means of descriptions and intentional explanations. Their activities emphasize retention of the image by puzzles or memory games, playing with artistic techniques, drawing or designing, literary and musical creativity, analyzing artistic elements such as colour, shape, size or material, and virtual visits in the form of videogame, guide visit or solving a mystery. Museums ascribed to an investigative model present problematization of the contents in order to achieve meaningful learning, so education prevails on technology. They offer activities to all educational levels and hold a section for teachers. Among these tasks, there are treatment information, problem solving, result communication and research. The study have shown a predominance of activist museums followed by traditional ones and a significant number of investigative museums, which led to the conclusion that the range of virtual art museums are adopting didactic principles in the development of their activities since an innovative standpoint, which shows a higher concern about the learning role of museums.

http://pixvid.me/APart The VHS Scholarship gives an honorable mention to Juliet. Juliet used VHS to help her earn credits for graduation at Dalat International School. Currently studying on the island of Penang, Malaysia, Juliet is preparing for college with a VHS online with AP Art History. Writing discussion posts and communicating with her online team members are some of the advanced skills she is able to sharpen with VHS. The Virtual High School is a non-profit organization that has literally changed the face of online and blended learning in high schools and middle schools across the country and around the world. Since 1996, we have brought art to the cornfields, math to the deserts, and science to the delta. The education students thought they couldn't receive, and administrators thought they couldn't afford, has been delivered via the Web by The Virtual High School.

The Roman Empire. Or Republic. Or...Which Was It?: Crash Course World History #10

12:26
In which John Green explores exactly when Rome went from being the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. Here's a hint: it had something to do with Julius Caesar, but maybe less than you think. Find out how Caesar came to rule the empire, what led to him getting stabbed 23 times on the floor of the senate, and what happened in the scramble for power after his assassination. John covers Rome's transition from city-state to dominant force in the Mediterranean in less than 12 minutes. Well, Rome's expansion took hundreds of years, he just explains it in under 12 minutes. The senate, the people, Rome, the caesarian section, the Julian calendar and our old friend Pompey all make appearances, but NOT the Caesar Salad, as Julius had nothing to do with it. Coal, Steam, and The Industrial Revolution: Crash Course World History #32

11:05
Mongols Shirts and Crash Course Posters! http://store.dftba.com/collections/crashcourse In which John Green wraps up revolutions month with what is arguably the most revolutionary of modern revolutions, the Industrial Revolution. While very few leaders were beheaded in the course of this one, it changed the lives of more people more dramatically than any of the political revolutions we've discussed. So, why did the Industrial Revolution happen around 1750 in the United Kingdom? Coal. Easily accessible coal, it turns out. All this, plus you'll finally learn the difference between James Watt and Thomas Newcomen, and will never again be caught telling people that your blender has a 900 Newcomen motor. Luther and the Protestant Reformation: Crash Course World History #218

15:07
In which John Green teaches you about the Protestant Reformation. Prior to the Protestant Reformation, pretty much everyone in Europe was a Roman Catholic. Not to get all great man, but Martin Luther changed all that. Martin Luther didn't like the corruption he saw in the church, especially the sale of indulgences, so he left the church and started his own. And it caught on! And it really did kind of change the world. The changes increased literacy and education, and some even say the Protestant Reformation was the beginning of Capitalism in Europe. Decolonization and Nationalism Triumphant: Crash Course World History #40

12:49
READ THIS: THERE ARE TWO MORE VIDEOS IN THE WORLD HISTORY SERIES. You should also turn on the captions. You'll like them. In which John Green teaches you about the post-World War II breakup of most of the European empires. As you'll remember from previous installments of Crash Course, Europeans spent several centuries sailing around the world creating empires, despite the fact that most of the places they conquered were perfectly happy to carry on alone. After World War II, most of these empires collapsed. This is the story of those collapses. In most places, the end of empire was not orderly, and violence often ensued. While India was a (sort of) shining example of non-violent change, in places like The Congo, Egypt, Rwanda, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, things didn't go smoothly at all. John brings you all this, plus pictures of Sea Monkeys. Sadly, they don't look anything like those awesome commercials in the comic books. Most of Earth’s precious and rare metals are locked too far in the crust for us to get at them, and launching them to space is too expensive for us to supply large colonies off Earth or explore far off worlds. How do we get our hands on the planetary resources inside asteroids? Let’s find out! Special thanks to Kelly and Zach Weinersmith for working with us on this video. A Night at the Museum, August 27, 2012

03:59
Freshmen Orientation at The Brooklyn Museum NEW YORK, NY (August 27, 2012) -- Macaulay Honors College at CUNY, in partnership with Smarthistory at Khan Academy, welcomes 500 incoming freshmen from the class of 2016 for a special encounter with art and conversation. The first ever "Macaulay Night at the Museum" will take place on Monday, August 27, 2012 from 7:00 -- 10:00 pm at the Brooklyn Museum (200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn). A reception for parents, donors and alumni will be held at 6:00 pm. The group will be addressed by Kate Levin, New York City Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs and newly elected board member of Macaulay Honors College Foundation. Macaulay will have exclusive access to the museum, which will be closed to the public. Starting their college careers with an introduction to the experience of art and its role in the life of New York City, the students will spread out in the museum's permanent galleries in small groups, armed with audio recorders and still cameras. In their groups, they will select works of art that challenge and speak to them, taking pictures and recording their conversations. Several weeks later, some of the students will return to their photos and recordings to create Smarthistory-style videos for use in their Macaulay freshman seminar, The Arts in New York City. Using Smarthistory's unique conversational methodology, supported by Macaulay's Instructional Technology Fellows, students will look closely at the works of art, discussing what they think and notice, and make connections to their personal/emotional responses. Technology is integrated into every aspect of the Macaulay curriculum and student life. Breaking down the walls of the classroom and helping students engage with the vast resources of New York City and the world beyond is just one of the key goals of a Macaulay Honors College education. Macaulay "Night at the Museum" is one example of how this integrated mission is put into practice. About Macaulay Honors College Macaulay Honors College at The City University of New York offers an exceptional academic and co-curricular environment for the best and brightest students, who come from all parts of New York and around the world. Through the unique Macaulay advising program, each student develops a coordinated, individualized academic program that includes research, global learning, graduate and professional mentoring, community engagement, and close faculty-student collaboration. Selected for their top high school records and leadership potential, every Macaulay student receives a full-tuition scholarship, a laptop and technology support, a $7,500 study grant to pursue global learning and service opportunities, and a Cultural Passport that provides access to more than 200 museums, libraries, and other treasures around New York City.
